Chapter 2

Love of a Phoenix

Chapter 2

Hermione sat in her room reading over her potions textbook. As she read, her mind replayed what had happened earlier that day after potions.

*Earlier that day*

Hermione had just finished putting away her things and was about to follow Harry and Ron from the classroom, when Professor Snape stopped her.

“Miss Granger, a moment please.” Severus said.

Hermione waved the boys on ahead and turned to head for the Professor’s desk. She stood their patiently as she waited for him to speak. Severus merely stood up and signaled for Hermione to follow him. She was lead into his private study.

“Have a seat Miss Granger.” Severus said. Hermione slowly sat in one of the chairs. “I asked to speak with you because, I wanted to know if you would become my assistant for the year.” He said.

Hermione froze. She couldn’t believe what he was asking. She just stared unbelievingly up at him.

“I’m quite serious Miss Granger. You are the brightest student that Hogwarts has probably ever seen. I would be interested in hearing some of your theories on the latest potions.” Severus added.

“Yes! I would love to be your assistant sir!” Hermione squealed.

“Very well, You will begin tomorrow evening. Be here in my classroom at eight sharp.” He instructed.

“I’ll be there.” She beamed.

Hermione still couldn’t believe that he had asked her to be his assistant. She felt calm for the first time in months. She sighed as she marked her place in the book and sat it aside. She got to her feet and walked to her sitting room window. She was so glad that she had her own rooms. She looked down and spotted the Professor in question standing at the lake’s edge. She turned, grabbed her cloak, and rushed out of her rooms.

Severus stood beside the lake watching the last rays of the sun set reflecting over the glassy water. He had always loved the lake at sunset. Even as a student. Now, as an adult, it was even more peaceful and beautiful to him.

“Professor.” Hermione said as she approached him.

“Did you need something Miss Granger?” Severus asked.

“Well, I was looking out my sitting room window and saw you standing down here. I was just wondering if everything was all right sir.” She answered.

“Everything is fine Miss Granger. I often come here to think. I always enjoyed the lake at this time of evening.” He said.

“It is quite lovely isn’t it.” She added as she walked up next to him.

From the corner of his eye, he took in her appearance. She had really grown up. She was no longer a child, but a beautiful young woman. She not only had beauty, but brains as well. In the few seconds it took him to notice she had grown up, he also realized, a part of him had been waiting for the day that she did.

‘This can’t be good.’ He thought.

“Well, I’ll leave you to your thoughts sir. See you at breakfast. Oh, thank you again for asking me to be your assistant.” She said.

“You’re quite welcome Miss Granger and I will see you in the morning.” He replied.

She smiled up at him, nodded good night, then headed back toward the castle. Severus stared after her and smiled slightly. She would make a wonderful assistant. Perhaps, maybe they could become friends as well. He let out a sigh and started returning to the castle as well.

At a secluded location, Voldemort was meeting with Lucius Malfoy. Draco had over heard the conversation between Severus and Hermione and immediately sent word to his father. Lucius sat patiently, as he watched Voldemort pace before him.

“Your son is sure he heard Severus correctly? That he offered the mudblood friend of Harry Potter’s a position as his assistant for the year?” Voldemort demanded.

“Yes my Lord. As I have mentioned before, I believe Severus may no longer be faithful to you.” Lucius answered.

“You are a fool Lucius. This could be just the thing we need to get to Potter and Dumbledore. If this mudblood could be turned, she would make a wonderful asset to us. She is the brightest student to ever enter that school. I will have to work quickly to get her to our side before she graduates.” Voldemort said.

“My Lord, she is a mudblood. She’s not worthy to serve you.” Lucius protested.

“You questioning me Lucius?” Voldemort hissed.

“No, never my lord.” Lucius answered as he bowed his head.

“Good. Leave me. I have plans to make.” Voldemort ordered.

Lucius nodded, bowed to him, and quickly left the room. Voldemort spun on his heel and rushed to his desk. He sat down and quickly began writing a letter. There was so much to do, and so little time to do it.
