Chapter 1- A New Term

Love…War…What’s the Difference?

A New Term

Hermione stared out the window as she sat in the Head Boy and Girl compartment on the Hogwarts Express. Across from her was Head Boy, Ernie Macmillan.

“How was your summer Hermione?” Ernie asked.

“It was good. Yours?” Hermione replied.

“It was great. My family took me on a holiday to the Greek Isles,” he smiled.

“I bet it was beautiful,” she said.

As Ernie told her about the village he and his family stayed at, Hermione’s thoughts began to wander. Over the summer she hadn’t received a single owl from Harry or Ron. Not hearing from Ron wasn’t anything new, but not hearing from Harry, was a bit unusual.

‘I didn’t even see them as I got on the train. Well, we have been growing apart over the last year. Let’s just see what happens when I see them at the school,’ she thought.

At Hogwarts, Severus sat in his study drinking a cup of tea and smoking a pipe. In less than an hour, he would be heading to the Great Hall for the Welcoming Feast. He let out a sigh as he caught sight of the contract he had signed the last night of term in June.

‘She’s just a know-it-all Gryffindor. Yet, why can’t I get her out of my head?’ he thought.

“Severus, you have a minute?” Albus asked as he entered the room.

“Of course Albus,” Severus answered as Albus sat across from him.

“I want to discuss Miss Granger’s project. Her theory is sound. I’m going to be speaking with her after the feast. I would like for you to work with her a few nights a week as well as Friday and Saturday nights; in addition to classes. Would that be acceptable?” Albus requested.

“That will be fine. I went over the contract and her research. If anyone can pull this off, it will be her,” Severus said.

Albus studied the Wizard for a moment, then spoke, “It seems your feelings towards her have changed. What brought on this change of heart?”

“What are you getting at old man?” Severus snapped.

“I’m just making an observation. Just heed this piece of advise. Don’t be afraid to take a chance, even if that chance seems impossible. Well, see you at the feast,” Albus smiled.

Hermione climbed out of the carriage and entered the castle. A soft smile was on her face as she headed for the Great Hall. As she made her way to Gryffindor table, she spotted Harry, Ron, and Ginny. She quickly joined them.

“Hey Mione,” Harry waved.

“Hey girl,” Ginny smiled.

“Hi guys. How was your summer?” Hermione asked as she sat across from them.

“It was great. Harry came to the Burrow and we threw him a Birthday party. Bill and Charlie even managed to make it to the party. Then, we went to Scotland and got to see Stonehenge,” Ron explained excitedly.

“Sounds like you had a great birthday,” Hermione smiled, but felt a twinge of hurt at not being included.

The summer before their sixth year, Arthur had been made Minister of Magic after Fudge had been caught by Aurors passing information to Voldemort. Ever since, Ron had been acting almost…snobby towards other people.

“Sorry we didn’t invite you, but everything was really last minute,” Ginny said sincerely.

“I understand Gin. So, you guys looking foreword to a new term?” Hermione asked.

As the feast wore on, Severus watched Hermione with her friends. At one of the Order meetings, Minerva mentioned that she had noticed a rift appearing between Hermione, Harry, and Ron. Severus could now see what she was referring to.

‘Potter and Weasley can’t see her full potential. Only Miss Weasley seems to notice,’ Severus thought.

“Severus, how’s the research coming?” Minerva asked.

“It’s coming along nicely. With a bit more research, I should be able to begin brewing the potion,” Severus answered.

“That’s good to hear. Merlin knows we could use the added protection,” Minerva nodded.

Severus had been doing research on a potion to help protect the Order members against most of the Death Eater’s curses. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t protect someone against the Unforgivables. He only hoped he could complete it soon.

Hermione made her way to her rooms. As she did, she thought back over the conversation she had just had with Albus.

*Flashback*

“Miss Granger, I want to speak to you about your project,” Albus said.

“What about it sir?” Hermione questioned.

“I would like for you to work on it a few nights a weeks, as well as Friday and Saturday nights and class as well. Professor Snape has already agreed to help you. Would that be agreeable to you?” Albus explained.

“That will be fine sir,” Hermione smiled.

“Good. When you have Professor Snape’s class this week, you and he can arrange a schedule,” Albus said.

“Yes sir,” Hermione nodded.

*End Flashback*

Hermione said her password and entered her rooms. They were beautiful. She had her own sitting room that was decorated in soft earth tones and a mahogany desk near a large bay window. She quickly went to explore her bedroom.

It was just as beautiful. A king size, four poster bed was on a raised platform against the far wall, was draped in sheer lavender bed curtains. The bed covers were done in lavender, baby blue, and emerald green. A large, spacious bathroom was to the left of the bed and a walk-in closet was to the right.

“I think I’m going to like it here,” she smiled as she entered the bathroom for a quick shower before bed.
