Bad News
Harry was waiting in the Three Broomsticks, a glass of Firewhisky in his hand. He was dreading this conversation. The Ministry had put him under immense pressure, knowing that Harry was keeping the information they needed from them.
He cared for Hermione deeply and this thing she had with Sam had overwhelmed him. Harry was so deeply moved by their love for each other, he had put off for a year what he couldn’t put of any longer and it hurt him as much as he knew it would hurt her. Harry had just felt they deserved a bit of a life, before they were plummeted back into the mire again.
He looked up as he saw her walking towards him and stood with his arms open as she started to cry. He hugged her tightly and stroked her hair.
‘I’m so sorry, Hermione…really, I am.’ He murmured.
Hermione pulled away and wiped her eyes on her sleeve as she sat down.
‘I need to know why, Harry. If I have to lose him after all of this time I deserve to know the reason.’ She looked at him, her face a mass of emotion.
‘I’m not allowed to say but you know the rumours that have been floating about. The problem is they’re not rumours, Hermione. It’s the truth and without him, we stand no chance at all. He’s the only one we can trust to get into the inner circle. And we’re running out of time. It’s going to take us at least a month to put back his memories and take away the ones from the past few years and…’ Harry stopped talking. He had said too much.
‘No! You can’t! Please Harry, don’t wipe me out of his life… it’s too harsh and…things are, well… gods Harry. I don’t know what I will do…’ Hermione’s sob caught in her throat as she stared at him in horror.
‘I have no choice, Hermione. He can’t know because it will affect the operation. You said you understood…right at the start, you said you knew what it would mean, even after I warned you. You chose this, Hermione. I’m sorry. Really.’
‘Harry, please… you don’t understand… I love him. He’s my life. If anything happens to him…’ She was pleading with him and Harry was starting to waiver.
‘I’ll make you a promise, OK? I will save all of his memories and give them to you. If we come through this, all of us, you can restore them. All of them. He will remember everything, all of it, the past, the present…and his life with you as Sam.’
‘Everything? You promise?’ Hermione’s brain was working at double-fast speed.
‘I promise.’ He took her hand across the table and squeezed it hard.
‘When will you take him, Harry?’ Hermione whispered.
‘In a week. We plan to Stupefy him as he leaves for work. He won’t know anything. I promise I will watch his back, Hermione. I care about him too.’ He drained his glass and stood. They hugged tightly. ‘Take care.’ He whispered and walked away without looking at her. He was feeling her pain.
Hermione sat for a long time staring into space. She remembered their first kiss vividly. They were washing up and having a heated debate about something or other when he bent his head and kissed her. She had dropped the cup she was washing onto the floor and the rest of the dishes had to wait until the following day. They had spent the whole night making love and she fell for him as soon as he entered her for the first time. But then, Hermione thought to herself, it wasn’t Sam she was in love with. She loved Severus and had done for a long time. When she and Harry had rescued him from the Shrieking Shack, she had immediately volunteered to care for him. She helped to Oblivate his memories and create the new ones and she got him a job, teaching at the local school. He thought they were just friends who used to work together. It was the only way to keep him safe.
Hermione sighed deeply and looked at her watch. She was well over her lunch hour and decided to take the afternoon off and go home. She wasn’t in the mood for much, but she knew they had a week left and there were some things he needed to know, before his memory was modified again. She just needed to wait for the right time.
