TO ENCHANT A KING: CHAPTER TWO.
“You utter witch!” seethed Narcissa.
“I did nothing! The king is simply being friendly, Narcissa. He has no interest in me!” she lied, knowing if she spoke a single word of truth she was sure Narcissa would scream bloody murder.
“How, after meeting you once, can he have become so enamored with you? You are plain and unnoticeable!” she hissed.
“That’s uncalled for Narcissa!” said Sirius.
“Oh do shut up, Sirius! She is supposed to be helping me not wooing the king herself!” she shouted.
“I am not wooing him! For the Lords sake, Narcissa, I do not want to woo the king!” Hermione sighed.
“Remember, Hermione, that I was given this task, not you. I was deemed more worthy of doing it.” she sneered.
“Fine.” breathed Hermione as she fell back on to her bed.
“Do you have to always be this unpleasant dear sister? Anyone would think you were jealous.” he smirked.
Narcissa shot up from her bed, a contemptuous look plastered all over her icy face.
“Jealous? Of that?” she said as she pointed toward Hermione.
“That,” he said as he pointed toward his quietly sobbing sister, “has more chance with the King than you will ever have.” he said before leaving.
Hermione jumped as the door slammed shut.
“I need your help Hermione, promise you will help me?” Narcissa pleaded.
“Of course.” she said before willing herself to fall asleep.
~*~
Hermione woke earlier than usual that morning; her sister was still sleeping peacefully. A slight smile graced her pale features.
Hermione’s mind was a buzz of thoughts. Was there more behind the king’s comments than she had first anticipated? Did he really feel that he could be drawn to her like a moth to a flame? She wondered why the king had favored her over Narcissa, who by most people’s opinion was the most beautiful of the pair. From early child hood Narcissa had always been the favorite of her mother and father, she was always called their crowning glory because of her delicate features. Hermione had always felt overshadowed by Narcissa’s beauty, Sirius had always told his younger sister that she was by far the better looking of the pair; with her English rose like qualities and that any man could be and would be knocked for six by her startling beauty.
Hermione thought more about this subject as she dressed that morning for court, taking time to rouse her curls and apply her favored sweet smelling rose water. While she never would dream of trying to dazzle the king, she was no longer going to sink into the background. So when Sirius came for the sisters the morning after their argument he was surprised to see them both in good sprits. He noticed how Hermione looked positively glowing; her eyes were shining as brightly as her smile. Narcissa on the other hand looked like she always did; bright blonde hair flowing in waves down her back and a seductive smile graced her face from the moment she woke.
With each girl holding an arm, Sirius and his sisters walked to the Royal court to begin their first day as Royal ladies in waiting and a courtier respectively.
The queen seemed to have taken an instant dislike to Narcissa, but to Hermione she was surprisingly pleasant. Speaking frequently about several different topics, the queen had Hermione’s utmost attention. So much so that Hermione did not notice the emergence of the king into the room. Hermione almost jumped out of her skin as the queen welcomed her husband, and she immediately sank into a low curtsey towards his Majesty.
The king smiled warmly at Hermione, who returned the smile with a chaste blush gracing her features. The king’s eyes danced merrily as he held his arm out for his wife.
“Are a selection of your ladies to be accompanying us on our jaunt around the gardens today, wife?” he asked.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” she said stiffly as she cast her eye over her ladies, “Lady Hermione and Lady Lavender will be coming.” she said.
Narcissa look Hermione in the eyes, her own seemed to be reflecting shock that she was once again overlooked for her plain sister.
The queen addressed the other ladies with instructions to amuse them selves for the afternoon.
This was not good; Hermione knew that Narcissa would again be furious with her for catching the eye of the king, as well as her Majesty. No matter how hard Narcissa had tried that morning it seemed the queen did not wish to know Narcissa as anything other than her lady in waiting. Hermione on the other hand seemed to be falling in favor of both the king and queen.
Hermione felt positively awful that she had been given this opportunity but knew she could not plead her sister’s case to the queen, for it simply would not be acceptable. She smiled slightly at Narcissa as she left the room walking steadily behind the queen and king. She was accosted by Sirius who led her behind Lady Lavender and pushed Sir Remus Lupin in front of him and was quick to tell her he was slightly gleeful that she had caught the attention of the king rather than their rather obvious sister.
“I think it’s great that he favors you.” said Sirius.
Hermione scoffed.
“For whom? Narcissa is going to be furious once more with me and I don’t think I can stand her temper tantrums any longer.” she admitted.
Sirius snickered.
“I shall have to write to Father and inform him of this positive turn of events! He will be so proud that at least one of his daughters is succeeding.” he said with a smile.
“I am in no way trying to ensnare the king, Sirius! I do not know what he seems to see in me. I am plain and boring and uneducated as Narcissa often tells me.” said Hermione.
“You are bright and beautiful and anything but boring, and the king sees that within you. He has spoken to me about you on more than one occasion.” he admitted.
Excitement bubbled in Hermione’s stomach.
“Did he? What did he say?” she inquired.
“He asked if you were betrothed.” he said.
Hermione could not hide her shock at her brother’s words.
“It seems our king has designs for you.” he smirked as they stepped into the Royal gardens.
Hermione was overcome with the beauty of such a simple place. The multitude of flowers was overwhelming and the colors were dazzling and bright. Hermione noticed the king and queen had broken away from each other and the queen was now walking alongside Sir Remus Lupin.
The king however was in conversation with Lady Lavender Brown, who seemed to be enjoying his company more than Hermione liked. She admonished herself at the very thought that she could feel jealousy for a man she had know merely a handful of days. But she did. She felt it deep in the pit of her stomach and there was nothing that she wished to do more than strike her hand across Lavendar’s face for daring to flirt with the king. The king on the other hand did not seem to be paying much attention to the Brown chit. His eyes ghosted over Hermione and his mouth fought the smile that wanted to break out.
Sirius was chatting absentmindedly besides her assuming she was listening to his every word. But in truth she was slyly watching the king who seemed mildly bored now with the conversation. He made his polite excuses and bid Lady Lavender goodbye. Hermione’s insides ceased their furious inner battle and quivered as the king motioned for Sirius to come to him. Hermione’s brother willingly followed him and watched as Sirius took the arm of Lady Lavender. She smiled slightly as the king held his hand out to her and she curtsied before taking his arm.
Hermione had never felt emotions as strong as the ones that cursed through her body, it was as if his touch was fire and she was indeed burning for him. A shiver of ornate pleasure ran through her body as his sparking eyes met hers. The king smiled as he felt the slight shiver on her skin.
“Did you enjoy the festivities last night, Lady Hermione?” said the king.
“Yes your Majesty, it was a memorable night indeed.” she replied.
“I noticed Sir Thomas Riddle made your acquaintance?” he asked.
“Forgive me, your Grace, but Sir Thomas seemed to want to befriend me just a little too much. It made me slightly uncomfortable to be in his arms.” she admitted.
“He is a fool to think you could be lured into in to anything that is not fitting to your station.” he said.
Hermione blushed.
She did not even notice that the King had come to a pause, his eyes fixed upon hers. His fingers slipped under her chin.
“You are beautiful, my Lady and I wish to get to know you better.” he said.
Hermione was dumbfounded by the kings behaviour towards her. How could he, a man of such stature take notice of a plain girl such as herself? Hundreds of different questions floated into her mind, each one more obscure than the last. She wanted to know this man, she wanted to crawl inside this man and never leave.
“Do you give your consent?” he asked.
“I do, your Grace, anything for my King.” she said honestly.
He smirked.
“I look forward to it.” he said as he led her through the rose garden unaware of the angry glare they were receiving from one they had left behind.
Hermione’s heart fluttered wildly in her chest, thumping hard inside her ribcage counteracting the furious heat that was rising rapidly up her spine. The breeze within the gardens was cooling, but being in the presence of the king made her temperature soar. He smiled at her softly as the continued to walk round the Royal gardens, occasionally stopping to admire the beauty of the pale pink roses that grew on the grounds of the palace or to engage her in intellectual conversation. She caught the gaze of her grinning brother from time to time and he subtly gave her a thumbs up which made her smile even more.
Behind the façade she portrayed to the king, Hermione was a bag of nerves. She could practically hear Narcissa in her head scolding her and berating her. She could not bear to listen to anymore of her sisters negative comments that were always without a doubt directed at her. The matter at hand was that she was coming to care a great deal about the king. Her reaction to his mere presence reduced her to a quivering mess. His touch turned her into an ever blazing inferno of wantonness - something Hermione had never experienced in her life.
Hermione was pure, she had never in all of her seventeen years on gods earth lain with anyone except her sister and that was as a child. She regaled in stories she had heard from Sirius about his promiscuous friends who indulged in risqué fantasies with women of loose morals and conducts. Hermione aspired to never be drawn into the world that her brother dreamed of. Sirius had always envisioned his life to be one of hedonistic escapades within the Royal court. Hermione was sure one day he would get his wish.
Hermione floated on air as she left the king. He assured her he would be seeing her very soon and admitted that he would much prefer to be in a more private setting where they could converse privately and openly without the need to shy away from open ears.
She was prepared for battle as she entered her chambers, her nerves where sharpened and her wits were firmly about her. There was no way she was letting Narcissa get the better of her once more.
Hermione was relieved to find Narcissa absent from their chambers and sat down on her bed, eager for the tension to leave her weary body. These feelings she had for the king where almost too much for her to handle. How could someone cope with such overwhelming emotion within one body? She often wondered if love was an over rated and much abused emotion. Her mother and father certainly had not married for love. But whenever she had spoke of love with her mother she had always pushed Hermione to find someone whom she could love and would love her back, never settle for second best when the best just may be around the corner.
So that’s how Hermione came to the decision that resulted in the actions that would come to change her life forever.
She would never settle for second best.
