The Bet Is On
Draco took his seat and crossed his arms in front of him. “Parkinson, Bulstrode, I want the both of you out of this compartment right now.” He ordered without looking at them.
“But Draco…” Pansy started as she tried to reach for his arm
He swatted her hand away and gave her a cold look. “Do as I say Parkinson.”
Tears started to fall down her cheek as she gave Draco a pleading look.
Disgustedly he turned away from her, “You know very well that crying doesn’t work on me. Now leave!”
Millicent took Pansy’s arm and guided her out of the compartment.
“What’s the matter mate? You’ve got something on your mind?” Blaise asked the moment he was sure that Pansy and Millicent were out of earshot.
“That girl Potter and Granger was with is a MudBlood too?” he queried softly.
Marcus nodded, “Yeah, although she looks delicious for a MudBlood.”
Blaise frowned, “You don’t remember her Draco? She’s in Slytherin too.”
“How did a MudBlood get into the House of Slytherin?” Draco asked incredulously.
Blaise shrugged his shoulders, “Beats me, actually we’ve been trying to figure that out for a while but we couldn’t think up of any reason as to why the Sorting Hat would put her in Slytherin.”
Marcus smiled smugly, “Well Draco, how about if we put that skill of yours into use. I’m willing to bet that you can’t charm her into your bed just like the other girls.”
Draco looked at Marcus in annoyance.
“It is a shame that you never considered her to be one of your toys. I’ve got important information about her too, she’s still untouched.” Marcus stated.
“How can you be so sure that she’s still untouched?” Draco inquired trying hard not to sound intrigued.
“Potter and Weasley were talking about protecting her honor and her innocence when we were in 5th year. And I overheard Granger and her talking about it while I was looking what compartment you guys were in.” Marcus sighed, “I did try to remedy that but she can throw a good hex and a mean punch, plus Potter’s always with her. I guess that’s the reason why even though she sees a lot of guys she still hasn’t gone all the way. I wonder who she’s dating this time.”
“And what are you insinuating? That I can’t shag her just because you can’t?”
Marcus nodded, “She looks sweet and all but she sure has a temper.”
Draco smirked, “If I do get to shag her, what do I get in return?”
“We are confident aren’t we? How about a hundred galleons?”
Blaise shook his head, “Leave her out of this guys.”
Draco’s eyes narrowed as he turned his attention to Blaise, “Why are you friends with that MudBlood?”
He sighed, “She’s too good for what you’re planning. Yes, she’s my friend. It’s not that easy to stay mad at someone who’s as nice as her.”
“You haven’t shagged her have you?” Marcus inquired seriously.
“Of course I haven’t. I didn’t befriend her so that I could shag her. She deserves better.”
Draco snorted, “You’re getting soft Blaise. The game is on Flint.”
Erika groaned when she heard Hermione’s voice waking her up. Slowly she opened her eyes and covered her mouth with her hand when she yawned.
“Are you sure you don’t want to join us Erika?” Hermione asked her again for the nth time that day.
She looked at Harry who was still sitting in front of her and nodded her head. “Yeah I’m sure Hermione. I’ll stay with Harry.”
Hermione nodded her head, “In that case, I suggest you two change into your robes now. We’re approaching Hogwarts.” And with that she ushered Ron with her to do prefect duties.
Erika leaned her head on the window and closed her eyes.
“Come on Erika, I’ll leave the compartment for you to change.” Harry said, waking Erika.
She yawned again, “Thanks Harry.” She watched as he left the compartment with his robes at hand so that he can change somewhere else.
When he got back there was no answer from inside the compartment. “Erika, are you finished? Come on Erika.” He tried knocking again but there was still no answer. “I’m going to open this in a minute. I suggest you make yourself decent.” Still no answer. He finally opened the door and found Erika sleeping with her head resting on the seat. Harry chuckled and gently shook her awake.
“I hate you, whoever you are,” Erika muttered as she sat up and looked at Harry. “Figures it would be you.”
“I take it you didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night.” Harry sympathetically stated.
She nodded and stood up when she realized that the train had stopped and heard students passing their compartment. “Damn businessmen and stars. You would think they have loads of things to do other than party at my parents place until the wee hours of the morning,”
“Go on out. I’ll take care of our trunks.”
“And I’ll save us a carriage
“How ar ya doin’ Erika? I’m glad to see that ya didn’t get left behind this time.” Hagrid greeted Erika when she got off the train.
Erika smiled “I’m fine Hagrid. How about you?”
“I’m doin’ fine. ‘Ave ya seen Arry?”
“He’ll be out in a couple of minutes, he’s just carrying our trunks out of the train. Listen, I have to go ahead since I have to save us a carriage.”
“Yeah sure Erika. I’ll see ya later at the feast.”
She nodded and headed off to the carriages. Too bad she got there late because all the carriages were already occupied.
“Hey Erika!” Hermione called from behind her.
She turned to face her friend and smiled. “Hermione, just the person I wanted to see.”
“Why? What’s wrong?”
“No, nothing’s wrong but something could go wrong later.”
“What do you mean?”
“It might be a good thing for you to tell Harry and Ron what happened between you and Malfoy.”
Hermione shook her head vigorously, “No Erika. They’ll hate me.”
“They’ll find out about it sooner or later. It would be better if they hear it from you instead of Malfoy or other people.”
Hermione looked down at the ground and sighed, “I suppose you’re right. I want you and Harry to meet me at the Room of Requirement later after the feast.”
Erika nodded and she watched Hermione leave rather slowly. She sighed as she approached a carriage and opened the door. Inside she found Ginny Weasley, Luna Lovegood and Neville Longbottom conversing. “Can my friend and I join you guys?”
“Depends on who your friend is,” Ginny answered silently.
“Harry.”
“Fine, but I don’t want him making any comments.”
Erika nodded and entered the carriage taking a seat opposite the three. She had heard that Ginny wasn’t in good terms with her family ever since she started going out and fooling around with Malfoy. Now that Malfoy and she were over Ginny had decided to move out of The Burrow because she claimed that she couldn’t stand living in a place where people hated the person she loved. Yes, she admitted that she was still in love with the git even though she caught him cheating on her with Hermione.
“So, how was your year Erika?” Ginny asked pleasantly. She had always liked her because she minded her own business, plus Erika never told The Golden Trio and her other brothers that she had been sleeping with Malfoy even though she saw them even before the news broke out.
“Really bad since I had to endure my parents and their eccentricities. It was really a let down for me when I got the news last year that Hogwarts wouldn’t open for the school year because of the war. I’m just glad it took only one year.”
Ginny laughed, “I know what you mean.”
“So what have you been doing?”
“I guess you’ve already heard from Ron that I moved out of The Burrow and that I have no contact with them.”
Erika nodded.
“Well, I’ve been working in the Leaky Cauldron as a waitress to pay for my rent, school and food.”
The door to the carriage opened and Harry peered inside. He frowned when he saw Ginny.
“Sorry Harry all the other carriages were already occupied.” Erika apologized and motioned Harry to sit beside her.
Harry sighed and took the seat beside his friend. “Evening Neville, Luna, Ginny,” he mumbled.
“Evening Harry!” Neville greeted back cheerily while Luna gave a nod at his direction.
Erika leaned to his ear and whispered, “Hermione wants to see us later at the Room of Requirement after the feast.”
He looked at her quizzically, “Why?”
“She has to tell you guys something important.”
“Is this about the secret?”
She smiled at him mysteriously, “Maybe.”
“So, what was all that screaming about at the train earlier?” Ginny inquired Erika.
She bit her lip and shook her head at Ginny discreetly so that Harry wouldn’t notice.
Ginny’s smile became wider, “So I’m guessing Draco finally told Hermione that there was nothing special between them?”
“Please Ginny, I know that you love the guy but I would rather not talk about him.”
Ginny looked at Harry who was trying to catch Erika’s gaze. “Okay then, I take it she has never told them.”
Erika sighed, “You’re right and I don’t think you’re in the position to tell them either.”
Shrugging her shoulders, Ginny smiled and looked out of the window. “No matter, I’m sure they’ll find out about it sooner or later although sooner would be better.”
Harry grabbed Erika’s left arm to catch her attention but he quickly let it go when he noticed her wince. “Did he?”
She nodded her head and smiled at Harry. “Don’t worry about it. It’s not as bad as you think.”
“First thing we do when we reach Hogwarts is to go to Madam Pomfrey so she can heal you.”
“It’s really not necessary Harry.”
He looked at his friend sternly, “Don’t argue with me Erika.”
“Fine,” she mumbled and sulked down on the seat.
Draco looked around at the Great Hall for any sign of Erika but to no avail. I wonder where she is. He frowned when he noticed that Potter was also nowhere to be found. The Sorting Ceremony was already finished and the Feast was nearing its end and still there was no sign of them.
“I see that we are finally complete.” McGonagall announced as she stood up at the front of the students.
His eyes followed McGonagall’s gaze and saw Harry and Erika standing at the door of the Great Hall. Erika looked down at the floor as she made her way at the farthest end of the Slytherin table. Harry meanwhile was watching her as he walked towards the Gryffindor table to where the MudBlood and Weasle were sitting.
He watched as Harry mouthed something to Erika who nodded weakly and took a sip of her pumpkin juice.
McGonagall cleared her throat to catch the attention of the student body again. Everyone’s attention turned back to her and she smiled. She introduced the newly assigned Head Boy, Head Girl and the 6th year prefects and each of them stood up as their name was called so that the 1st years would recognize them. “Now that there would be more students than there were the previous school years the staff and I have decided to assign Prefects from the 7th year.” She introduced the 7th year Prefects from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. “Lastly, the 7th year Slytherin Prefects are Draco Malfoy and Erika Night.”
Draco averted his attention to Erika. He saw her take a deep breath, take the Prefect badge from the pocket of her robe and pin it in place. She’s also a Prefect? That meant she had potential to be a great witch. He smirked, getting that record was going to be easy now that he can get her alone every night. This is just too perfect.
The 6th year students started to ask the first years to fall in line and follow them to the dorms. They were going to have to supervise. Slowly he approached her.
“Are you ready to take care of some brats?” he asked her haughtily.
She looked at him and sighed.
“Erika!” he heard Potter call her attention at the Gryffindor area.
“I’ll be back in a minute,” she stated without turning to see if he approved.
He returned the dirty look that Potter gave him before Erika was taken aside.
“I don’t like it one bit that he’s also a Prefect.” Harry stated darkly. Noticing that Malfoy was staring at them, he gave him a dirty look and set Erika aside so they can talk.
Erika sighed, “I didn’t know he was going to be reinstated as a Prefect, if I had known then I would have declined Headmaster McGonagall’s offer, but what’s done is done. Anyway, it’s not like we’ll be sleeping in one room. We’ll have separate rooms just that our common room will be shared.”
“I know Erika but I don’t trust him.” He was still glaring at Malfoy who continued watching them.
She took a hold of his face with both of her hands and guided it such that he had no choice but to stare down at her smiling face. “Listen four-eyes, I can take care of myself. You don’t have to worry about me.”
He relaxed under her touch and sighed, “I can’t help but worry about you.”
“Aw, that’s so sweet of you four-eyes.”
“Yeah, I can’t help but worry about you because you are such a klutz.”
She let go of his face and pouted, “I’ve matured over the year four-eyes. I’m no longer a klutz.”
Harry chuckled, “Oh yeah? Where is your wand then? I haven’t seen you use it or even take it out when we were in that sticky situation with Malfoy.”
Erika closed her eyes. “Damn, I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.”
He took out her wand and held it in front of her, “I know you too well Erika. Anyway, open your eyes.”
Slowly she opened them and her eyes grew wide at the sight of her wand. She excitedly took it from him and smiled. “Where did you find it?”
“You left it at The Web. I figured you already couldn’t remember where you placed it.”
Erika nodded her head as she jumped up and down. “Thank you so much Harry.”
“What? Is that all? Not even a kiss?”
She blew a kiss to him and winked as she sauntered off towards Malfoy’s direction.
“Don’t forget about later!” He shouted after her
“Yeah, I’ll meet you guys there after I change.” She shouted back and faced the scowling Malfoy.
Erika smiled as she changed into her faded jeans and baby-tee. At least I didn’t have to deal with Malfoy’s arrogance or insults while we supervised the lower years. Funny, he was quiet, like he was plotting something. Hhmmm…should I be worried for Harry’s sake?
She looked at her reflection at the mirror and made a face. Well, what did you expect? As usual, I look just like my average self, which I hate so much. At least the bruises and cuts are now gone. Goodness, I would have looked horrible with those. It was a good thing Harry brought me to Madam Pomfrey.
Come on, those three are waiting for you and you have to be there to make sure that they don’t badger Hermione. Anyway, it’s just those three that you’re meeting so there’s no need to try and look glamorous.
She shook her head, glamorous my ass. Stop dreaming Erika. You can’t look glamorous even if your life depended on it.
That’s it, enough with your self-harassment, you really have to go.
She stepped out of her room and found Malfoy with his usual posse.
“Leaving?” Marcus inquired.
“What does it look like to you? Oh I forgot you’re dumb, that’s why you’re still in Hogwarts when in fact you should have graduated ages ago,” she answered in annoyance. She had never really liked the guy mainly because he had tried feeling her up a couple of times.
“You wench! Being a Prefect doesn’t give you the right to insult me.”
She raised an eyebrow, “I’ve always insulted who I wanted to insult.”
Nearby she heard Malfoy chuckle, “And here I thought you were just a goody-goody just like those three. You sure act different when you’re with Pothead and his gang.”
“Don’t insult my friends ferret.”
“If I were you I would refrain from insulting me or calling me names.” Malfoy warned her.
“The thing is I’m not you, which really is a great relief. Did you think that being the Slytherin Prince would give you immunity from insults and name calling?” Erika laughed out loud, “Obviously that is not the case.” She pointed her wand at the door of her room and nonverbally placed wards on it so that none of the guys could enter it and go through her stuff.
“Watch out for Filch.” Blaise reminded her before she could walk off.
Erika was about to give a smart come back but Blaise shook his head.
“They already know that we’re friends.”
“Ha, and they didn’t nail you to a cross? I find that highly surprising.”
Blaise shrugged his shoulders.
She smiled at him apologetically, “Sorry about that. I was in my defense mode. Thanks anyway Blaise.”
“But Draco…” Pansy started as she tried to reach for his arm
He swatted her hand away and gave her a cold look. “Do as I say Parkinson.”
Tears started to fall down her cheek as she gave Draco a pleading look.
