Confrontations in the Corridor

@ LOL Television: You are officially my first review ever on AFF, and you ROCK! Here is more, I hope it lives up to your expectations. Thanks for the review! :-)

Chapter Two:
Confrontations in the Corridor

Severus awoke some hours later in a state of mild confusion: there was some manner of commotion coming from beyond his bed. As he slowly pulled himself to consciousness, he recognized the sounds of his bunk mates trying to wake him for dinner.

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” he groused. His bunk mates had done a rather thorough job of deconstructing the wards he had put up—damn Slytherins—so he pulled back the bed curtains and surveyed his disheveled image in the mirror. Smoothing his rumpled clothing and running a hand through his oily hair, he sighed and frowned. ‘Skinny, pale, ugly,’ he told himself, ‘skinny, pale, ugly.’ No one could ever love that. With that parting thought, he turned and departed for the Great Hall and dinner. His fellow Slytherins had not waited around and he had not expected them to do so.

On his way, Severus noted that the halls were entirely deserted. It was somewhat eerie, but as he was used to solitude the effect was lost. Just when he started to recognize the feeling of relief at being alone, a shadowy figure appeared approximately halfway between Severus and his destination, still far enough down the hall that anything which might occur would not be heard over the din in the Great Hall. Hoping against hope that this figure was friendly, he none-the-less gripped his wand, and it was just as well that he did because once in range, Severus registered the much-loathed features of James Potter lurking ahead unaccompanied by his band of Merry Men. Perhaps it was too much to ask of the canine crew and the vermin to be late for a meal. Smirking and tightening his grip on his wand, Severus strode forth looking, as ever, like a twitchy spider looking for a shadow in which to hide. He stopped short when he was even with Potter, against the opposite wall of the corridor.

“Well, Potter,” he began, trying consciously to turn the fear in his voice to brusque anger, “what do you want?”

In an instant, James Potter closed the distance between them and shoved his wand in Severus’ face. He was standing uncomfortably close.

“Like what you saw, Snivellus? That’s right, I saw you. I watched you, watching us. Watching me and Lily. Did you imagine it was you with her? Did it—turn you on, you disgusting, oily git?!” With that, James proceeded to shove Severus into the wall with more force than was strictly necessary. It felt so good the first time, he could not restrain himself from doing it several times more, watching Severus’ head snap back and forth, hitting the stone wall more than once.

Severus was no match for James, not physically, and not yet with his wand. The pain in the back of his skull was causing him to see bright flashes of light, and feel nauseous; he stared hard into the oncoming blackness, feeling a warmth coming over him, everything would be alright, they’d find his body and heal him, and Potter would be expelled at long last…

“Don’t you dare, don’t you DARE! Not while I’m talking to you, you worthless piece of filth. You aren’t worth the ground she walks on, you know that? She would never, never have you. But she’s going to have me… I’m going to be her first. How does that make you feel?” Just for emphasis, James shook Severus once more. “You know what? I want to hear you say it. Go ahead, Snivellus, say it.”

Incensed at Severus’ blank stare, James tried again, “Listen here, you ugly fuck. Say it if you want to walk out of this corridor under your own power.”

For the second time in one day, Severus felt the increasingly familiar sensation of tears rising in his eyes. Why should it hurt more to admit it to -him- than it did when he told himself daily? The answer was simple; to say it out loud was to admit defeat to James Potter… again. In a real way. Still, he was a Slytherin and self-preservation instincts were beginning to kick in. He only hoped he would not sound as anguished as he felt.

Choking back a sob and steeling himself, Severus began in a hushed voice, “I’m not worth the ground Lily walks on, and she would never have me.”

“There, that wasn’t so hard, was it? I’ll tell you what. I’m a sport. You want to see her? You want to see Lily?”

Severus was honestly frightened and confused by the direction of this conversation, but more than anything, he did want to see Lily. She hadn’t given him the time of day in the past two years, and he had tried with increasing desperation to get an audience with her for even a minute.

Stupidly, he looked up at James and whispered, “You could do that? You could get her to talk to me?” Damn his hope.

“Yeah, yeah, I could do that,” James said in a suave, calculating tone. “Why don’t you meet us tonight in the Room of Requirement, at say, eleven thirty?”

Severus had so many questions, but he never got the chance to ask, because as he was opening his mouth, someone asked for him.

“Whatever for, James?” asked Lily Evans, whose eyebrows were raised in interest.

“Lily!” James exclaimed, obviously surprised. “How long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough, James. Come on, now, let’s eat. And Severus,” she said in a rather cold tone, “we will see you at eleven thirty.”

After watching the departure of the now somewhat-less-than-happy couple, Severus walked to dinner feeling considerably better about life. Lily was angry with James, and he, Severus Snape, would get to see his love, Lily Evans, before the day was through.

A/N: I wrote this VERY quickly, so I hope it's alright. If there are glaring, annoying problems, please point them out and I will fix. It will get very interesting in the next chapter, I promise. I would say look for it around Wednesday night late, sooner if my meeting with my thesis committee goes poorly tomorrow morning and I'm stressed out.

A/N Update: I couldn't sleep last night, so I have written the next chapter. I am not pleased with it. Lily is too wishy-washy, Severus is too soft, and James is just too mean. Whenever I get all my ducks in a row, I will put up another chapter. In the meantime, please review.
