Chapter Two: Found Out
~Flashback~
The scarlet train was a sight for sore eyes.
Severus Snape blinked back tears of joy as he pushed his trolley over to the storage car. The pain in his backside had somewhat subsided, yet not enough to take the limp away. He felt his pale face flush with embarrassment and looked around to see if anyone had noticed. As per usual, nobody batted an eye at the ugly, stringy teenager; not even to crack a joke at his expense. With a sigh, he heaved himself up onto the train and heard the conductor’s whistle.
The Hogwarts Express was made up of compartments which seated five people comfortably. It was a wonder that Severus always managed to find an empty one and keep it empty throughout the duration of the trip. Apparently, they would rather sit upon their friends’ laps then share a compartment with him.
He took his familiar seat by the window in the car closest to the front, and opened his potions textbook. Since no one ever sat with him, he usually got a good two hours worth of studying out of the way.
As Severus began to read, the words lost focus. He couldn’t understand what was making them blurry until a small drop of water hit the page. His heart sank; he was crying, but didn’t understand why. Was it because he was lonely? Or because he had suddenly turned invisible to the other students?
It reminded him of his first day at Hogwarts. At least he had Lily to keep him grounded back then. These days, he saw her less and less, especially over the summer. His father warned him to stay in the house and finish up all the chores.
He was crying because it hurt to sit down.
The compartment door slid open and James Potter poked his head inside. Hazel eyes met onyx and time seemed to stop.
“What the hell’s wrong with you?” Potter drawled. “Somebody have a go at you before we got the chance?”
Severus looked over his shoulder and saw Sirius Black’s shaggy dark head and Remus Lupin’s curious brown eyes. He heard rather than saw Peter Pettigrew, by the trademark giggle.
Quickly, Severus dragged a sleeve across his eyes, mortified that Potter saw him crying. Again, he was painfully reminded of his first ride aboard the Hogwarts Express – the day Sirius coined his nickname, Snivellus.
“Come on, James. Kick him out. Let’s go,” Black called impatiently.
Severus looked up, disturbed. “And just where am I supposed to go? If you lot couldn’t find a compartment, am I supposed to just sit on the floor in the corridor?”
“Who cares?” Laughed Pettigew, “There’s more of us than there are of you…”
Potter stepped inside and sat down across from Severus by the window.
“I think it would be interesting to keep him in here with us.” He smirked. Black dropped into the seat beside Severus and draped an arm about his shoulders.
“Yeah! How ‘bout it, Snivelly? Want to ride with us?” He winked at Potter as he pulled out his wand.
Severus sat quite still. As humiliating and dangerous it was to just sit there and let them ridicule him, he was simply too hurt and too tired to fight back. He stared down at the book on his lap and felt Potter’s eyes staring straight through him.
As if on cue, Potter reached out and knocked the book onto the floor.
“What’s that anyway? As if you need to study.” He rolled his eyes, not really up to teasing today. Something was terribly, horribly wrong with Snape. The only thing he’d done in his defense thus far was to argue about his seat. He met Sirius’s eyes and shook his head. The latter reluctantly tucked away his wand and removed his arm from Snape’s shoulders.
“What’s the matter with you, Snape?” James demanded. “What happened?”
Severus froze, unsure of what was going on. They were bullies, weren’t they? Potter and his pals never gave up an inch – so what was different about this day? He felt the tears welling up again, and his heart began to pound. He couldn’t do it. Not in front of them…It would give them ammunition! It would humiliate him beyond anything –
“Snape…?” James blinked in surprise, watching him. He glanced around at his friends, unsure of whether these tears were cause to make fun of him of not.
Sirius Black gave a hesitant chuckle.
“Are you crying?” He asked, bending to peek into Snape’s face. The latter swooped down to pick up the fallen book and got to his feet. He forced his way to the door, shoving it aside, unable to face them any longer, and disappeared into the corridor.
“What the hell is he walking like that for?” Pettigrew piped up, oblivious.
James felt something fierce rise up in his chest. The sudden need to find out who had hurt Severus Snape became vital. Years of hatred and disgust and jealousy seemed to melt away into the urge to save and protect. It was in his nature; the only surprise was that it was directed at someone whom he had learned to regard with contempt.
Sirius’s gray eyes followed Snape out of the compartment until he was no longer visible. Something snapped in his chest – the ice around the part of his heart that kept the Slytherin out. Someone hurt him in such a way that Sirius could never comprehend. He needed to know more…

Severus slammed the bathroom door shut behind him and leaned his back against it. Painful sobs wracked his body, terrified at the thought that they might figure out what had happened to him. What would they say about it? How would they further humiliate him?
