Manipulations and Machinations

I forgot to say in the last chapter, this is set in AU Book 5. Certain elements will be used, but it will on the whole be a new story.

AN-I am also looking for a Beta-reader, so if anyone is interested feel free to let me know in a review and I’ll get you my email address. Thanks!

Chapter One- Meddling and Machinations

*15 years previous, All Hallows Eve*

Everyone wears masks. Some are short term, to hide feelings or illness in a moment of weakness. Those are the easiest to hold. After all, any one can put up a front for a few days or weeks. It’s the people who hide behind masks their entire lives that have the most trouble. Masks that are used to hide entire personalities, thoughts, and beliefs. Eventually, no matter the will or strength of the person hiding, those masks begin to crack. But sometimes, those cracks turn lives in directions that had never been considered.

Albus Dumbledore was old. Older than most thought, as he was coming up on his 200th birthday, and he liked to think that he had picked up the wisdom of the ages during those two hundred years on Earth. He was used to people agreeing with his actions, agreeing with a smile and a nod and going about whatever task he set them too, allowing him to go about the big plans and the big decisions that affected the wizarding world as a whole. That was how it had worked for more years than he could count.

Which was why he was finding it so hard to deal with the letter that was lying on his desk.

The letter was a reply to one that he had sent weeks ago, a simple request from him to handle a certain….problem, that he had become aware of. A problem that would put a major kink in his plans of how to defeat the Dark Lord Voldemort. In his mind his request was more than reasonable, after all, they should want to get rid of the problem as much as he did.

Apparently the Halliwells didn’t agree with him, judging by the Howler that sat on his desk. It was smoking at the edges, so he calmly sat down in his desk, waiting for it to open itself.

He didn’t have to wait long. The letter ripped itself open and a woman’s voice started screaming at him, in a voice that he knew well.

“ALBUS WULFERIC PERCIVEL DUMBLEDORE! I AM ASHAMED OF YOU! How DARE you request that I KILL my granddaughter?! All because of who her father is?! We are WELL aware of her father and his activities and as REHENSIBLE as those activities are, we do not hold those actions against an INNOCENT CHILD!! So, with all due respect,” The Headmaster could hear the sarcasm dripping from those words, and it caused rage to flare in his eyes. If there was one thing he hated more than people not following his orders…it was people not giving him the respect that he had earned. She would pay, she would pay in the most painful way that Dumbledore could come up with, no matter how long that it took. “Professor Dumbledore, LEAVE MY GIRLS ALONE!”

The red envelope blew him a raspberry and ripped itself up, the echo of Penelope Halliwell’s voice resounding around his office.

Well, that was just…unacceptable. His plans could be put in serious jeopardy if this….half-breed…was allowed to survive.

He would just have to take care of it himself. He stood up, reaching for his wand, and headed calmly out of his office. A few minutes worth of spell work, and then the problem would be no more.

He could get his plans back on track and forget about this little incident.

At least, that’s what he thought.

He was halfway down the staircase, humming to himself and sucking on a lemon drop, secure in the knowledge that his problems were soon to be taken care of, when his Potions Professor and Spy ran into him. Dumbledore glared at them man, cursing him in his head for more reasons than the Slytherin would ever know, but all thoughts of the Halliwell problem were forced from his mind.

“Professor! The Dark Lord, he’s attacking the Potters!” The Headmaster started towards the apparition point, cursing in his head. Things were being set into motion before he was ready.

It would be years before he thought of the Halliwells again, and by then, it would be too late.

Sorry that this chapter and the previous are so slow and disjointed, but I've never really written a manipulative Dumbles story, so I'm not really sure how to get his character across. Any suggestions would be more than appreciated, and I promise that the next chapters will be more informative. Thanks for reviewing!
