Chapter 1

Mutant VS. Magic

Chapter 1

Hermione was on her way to the Headmaster’s office. During her free period, she had received a note asking her to meet the Headmaster right away. As she walked, she tried to think of anything she had done wrong, but was drawing a blank. She reached the door, knocked, and entered the office.

“Please, come in Hermione,” Albus smiled.

As Hermione entered she saw Harry, Ron, Draco, Professor Snape, and two other people. One she hadn’t seen in nearly four months and the other she hadn’t seen in a couple of years. Her face broke into a huge smile as she ran to the two people. “Ororo! Hank! I can’t believe it!” she cried.

“Ha! Ha! Hello Hermione. It’s been a while,” Hank, also known as Beast, laughed as he returned Hermione’s hug.

“You look good Hermione,” Ororo smiled.

“What are you two doing here? Is something wrong with Uncle Charles? Is something wrong with the school?” Hermione questioned as her smile faded slowly.

“Hermione, have a seat and they will be happy to explain the reason for their visit,” Albus smiled softly.

Hermione sat beside Draco while Hank began speaking, “I know you have your problems with a wizard by the name of Voldemort. The thing is, he has now joined forces with a powerful mutant by the name of Eric Lensheer. We also call him Magneto. He has the ability to control and manipulate metal.

“We believe that if the two of them join forces, they will destroy all humans who are not mutants or Witches and Wizards. Professor Charles Xavier has sent us here to ask for your help. Magneto we can handle…this Voldemort, we can’t,” Hank explained.

“Voldemort will destroy everyone who isn’t a pureblood. That’s all he cares about. Even if he joined Eric, he would still double cross him and end up killing, or trying to kill all the mutants. Trust me on this, Eric has no idea what he’s getting into by joining with Voldemort. All it will lead to is the destruction of all mutants and humans,” Hermione said.

“There’s something else Hermione, we found Jean,” Ororo replied.

“Wh…what did you just say?” Hermione asked in shock.

“I said we found Jean. Logan and I had gone in search of Scott at Alkali Lake. There was no sign of Scott, but there was Jean at the edge of the lake. The Professor has her in the medical bay at the school. For the moment, she is unconscious. Your uncle was hoping you could come and help us. You were the only one she would ever fully confide in,” Ororo answered softly.

Hermione slowly stood up and walked to a nearby window. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The day she feared, had finally come. Jean had returned, but was it really Jean, or was it something else?

“I’ll go. When do you return?” Hermione stated.

“Wait one bloody minute! If Hermione goes, we all go,” Harry cried as he Ron, and Draco got to their feet.

“Guys, this doesn’t concern you,” Hermione said.

“Look, if Voldemort has left the country, then I need to follow him,” Harry said fiercely.

“And you know the two of us, where you and Harry go, we go too,” Draco smirked.

“Then I will be going as well Headmaster. After all, my skills as a potions master, might come in handy,” Severus added.

“Very well. How soon will you be returning to New York?” Albus asked Hank.

“An hour. Charles wants us back as soon as possible,” Hank answered.

Hermione climbed out of the car and stared up at the mansion. It was as beautiful as ever. She sighed as the breeze blew through the grounds. She smiled as she saw the students running around the grounds and heading for classes.

“Bloody hell! Look at this place!” Draco gaped as he stared at the house.

“It’s quite beautiful isn’t it,” Ororo smiled as she looked over at Harry, Draco, Ron, and Severus.

“This is a school?” Severus asked.

“Yes. Charles started this place a little over twenty years ago. It’s a safe haven for Mutants,” Hank answered.

The group made their way into the house. Hermione smiled as she looked around the house. Not much had changed since she was a student or when she had been there that summer. She had always felt safe at the school. Hank and Ororo led them straight to Charles’ office. Hermione walked in and rushed right for her Uncle.

“Uncle Charles!”

“Oh my dear Hermione. I’m so glad you came,” Charles said as he hugged her tightly.

“How is she?” Hermione asked.

“Right now, she’s in a deep sleep. I felt it safer that way. I can’t risk her hurting anyone… especially the students. I hope you can reach her,” Charles answered.

“Can I see her? I just need to know what stage she’s at,” Hermione said.

“Of course. Ororo, Hank, please show these four gentlemen to their rooms while I take Hermione down to see Jean,” Charles instructed.

“Mione, let us come with you,” Harry said.

“No! You four coming down there with me is like leading the lamb to the slaughter! Even though she is unconscious, she could still sense you! I won’t allow you guys to get hurt. Go with Ororo and Hank and I will catch up with you later. Please,” Hermione pleaded.

The four just nodded, surprised by her outburst. Hermione and Charles left the office while Ororo and Hank led the four Wizards upstairs. The four stared in surprise and awe as they looked around at the beauty of the mansion.

“How many students are here?” Severus questioned Ororo.

“At present there are two hundred fifty students,” she answered.

“Oh Jean,” Hermione sighed as she walked up to the bed that held her friend.

“She’s been this way since they brought her here. I’ve been slowly replacing the mental blocks, hoping to contain the Phoenix, but I don’t think it will do much,” Charles sighed.

“I agree. Let me put my things away and then clear my mind. After that, I will come back and try to find out what happened to Scott,” Hermione replied.

“Of course. I’m sorry you had to return on such sad terms. Do you think Scott is still alive?” he asked.

“Yes. Even if the Phoenix had control, Jean would have stopped it from killing him. I’m pretty sure he’s knocked out somewhere near where they found her,” she answered.

“I feel the same thing. Go and gather your thoughts. You will need them when you attempt to communicate with Jean,” he agreed. Hermione patted Jean’s hand and left the medical bay.

Logan was walking around the backyard. He knew that Ororo and Hank had returned from wherever the Professor had sent them. As he came toward a stone bench, he spotted a young girl sitting there with her head resting on her hands, and her elbows resting on her knees.

“Shouldn’t you be in class?” Logan asked as he approached her.

“No. I’m right where I should be Logan,” Hermione answered as she stood up and faced him.

The two just stared at each other for a moment, before Logan began walking to her. She smiled up at him. A second later, he surprised her by gathering her into his arms and hugging her close. Hermione quickly returned the hug, enjoying the feel of holding him in her arms.

“What are you doing here?” Logan questioned as he released her.

“Uncle Charles wanted me to help with Jean. When you and Storm found her, did you find any trace of Scott ever being there?” Hermione replied as they sat on the bench.

“Yeah, I found his glasses floating. It was weird…it was almost like there was some kind of field that was floating things around the area,” he answered.

“That was the Phoenix. As a Phoenix, Jean can levitate anything she wants at the same time. I think Scott is still alive and somewhere near where you two found Jean. I’ll be poking in her mind in a bit and hopefully I will be able to locate him so he can be brought home,” she explained.

“I hope you do find him,” he said.

Hermione sighed as she closed her closet door. She had been putting off going down to Jean again, simply because she was afraid of what she might find inside her mind. She only prayed her instincts about Scott were right and that he was still alive.

“Well Jean, it’s time you and I have a little chat,” Hermione said as she turned to exit her room.
