Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Kristin Francis Phillips pushed her messy, blonde, hair behind her ears. If only it was a bit longer, it wouldn’t be so much trouble. As it was, it came to her chin in random waves. Her gray eyes picked up the color of the green, off-shoulder, shirt that she wore. This morning had been more than busy for her and emotionally straining seeing as her parents had left without a birthday well wishing to her. She had always known that she was adopted. Her parents never hid the fact that she was a pity case. Her younger brother was their birth child and more than favored. Even though she didn’t like her parents, she didn’t hate them. She and her brother, Patrick, were close and an allied front in the subtle battle at home.

Today had been her 17th birthday and she was now legal in the magical world. Her parents had given her two packages. In one was her birthday present. It was wrapped with fabric of a deep brown and looked like it could be used as an accessory with a little work. Inside was a dress robe. It was a beautiful shade of deep purple with a soft cloud like material surrounding it. Purple sparkles on the chest cups would draw the eyes straight to the area. It was very pretty but Kristin let out a heavy sigh anyways.

Standing up she put the dress in its container and took it to her mothers room. She sat it on the bed and wrote a note saying that it didn’t fit and should be taken back to the store. This wasn’t true but Kristin had done this twice before… with the same dress. Her mother had bought it for her three years ago. She knew that it was meant well but her parents didn’t put much thought into her life. All that she could do was take what her parents said and did with a grain of salt and a shake of her head.

On her way back to her room, Patrick stepped out of his room and ran up to her. His long blonde hair was pulled into a pony tail and a big smile graced his lips. He wrapped his six year old arms around his sister and handed her a badly wrapped present. The parchment it was wrapped in had ink stains from him practicing his letters on it.

“Open it! Open it!” He said with a gleam of hope in his eyes.

Slowly, Kristin peeled back the parchment. Inside sat a stuffed mouse. Its soft cotton skin was a dark gray. It had beady black eyes and huge ears on it. Kristin smiled at it and then at her brother.

“I love it.” She assured the boy.

“Its name is Squeak.” He said proudly.

“I see. I will take him with me to Hogwarts. I’ll talk to him every day and make sure to take care of him.” Kristin said with another gentle smile.

“Make sure to feed him lots of secrets. That’s how he stays alive.” Patrick said with a nod of his head as he ventured back into his room.

Kristin waited a moment and went back to her own to open the second package. Inside was a folder. It contained all of her adoption information in it. A picture fell out and three toddler children were in a half circle in the picture. One had red hair, and the other had brown. Kristin recognized herself from other pictures. A card was attached with names and a strands of hair attached.

“Sasha and Hermione, hmm?” She asked herself.

On the bottom of the card a message appeared with a meeting place for her and her sisters. Under it appeared the circular writing of Sasha saying the meeting was OK. Kristin quickly picked up her quill and wrote down that it sounded good to her on the card. The last to respond was Hermione saying that she would be there. With careful hands, Kristin put the picture and the meeting card in her truck so that she wouldn’t forget them.

As she was packing some of her stuff, an owl tapped at her window. It came bearing a message. With slow hands, Kristin took the small paper from the bird and jerked her hands back as it pecked at her. There were two lines written on the parchment.

The snitch is loosed in the usual spot.
Tag, your it.

Kristin grabbed up her broom and jumped on it before flying out her window. It didn’t take long for her to reach the destination she had been seeking. Her gray eyes scanned the green horizon looking for the glint of a golden snitch. Mounted atop her Firebolt, Kristin could see for miles in any direction. A sudden flash caught her eye and she spurred her broom into a speedy drop

On the left side of her a new figure emerged and raced with her towards the goal. The figure reached out and brushed the side of her face as they both sped up. With a small grin, Kristin kicked out her foot and hit her opponent’s broom. A small shout went up as the racer had to stop and regain his balance. Kristin reached out and grasped the golden ball by one of its wings. With a triumphant laugh, she landed on the soft, green, grass.

A pair of dark tan arms encircled her waist from behind. Kristin turned her 5’2”, slender, frame to look at the man behind her. His body towered over hers at 5’11”. Soft looking ringlets of ebony hair fell across his forehead almost daring her to push them out of the way. Blaise Zabini was definitely something to look at.

“I have something to give you on this very special day.” He said with a small grin. He held out a small box.

Kristin took it and slowly opened it. Inside lay a sapphire bracelet. It was slender and could be worn with anything to dress it up just enough.

“Oh, Blaise! Thank you.” Kristin reached up and looped one arm around his neck to pull him into a fiery kiss. Their tongues played together in a soft battle for dominance before the broke apart for air. Kristin let out a small sigh and leaned her head against his hard chest.

“Kitty, something is bothering you today.” His smooth voice flowed over Kristin’s skin and sent a shiver up her spine.

“I am finally going to meet my sisters. I am nervous. What if they don’t accept me or like me?” Kristin asked with another small sigh.

“Why wouldn’t they?” Blaise countered with a small kiss to her forehead.

“It may be because I am a Slytherin. To most that is reason enough. If they are in any other house then they might not want to be seen around me. Slytherins do have a bit of a bad reputation.” Kristin unloaded her troubles and felt a bit better that she had her boyfriend there to talk to.

“Slytherins are called sly, devious, and cunning. You are all of those things. We are also called Death-Eater spawn. For the most part that is true. You’re real parents weren’t Death Eaters. The only reason that you received the mark was to protect the family that you have now. With the Dark Lord defeated over the summer you and I have no reason to live in fear. All of us have been to the Ministry to clear our names. As for the reputation of Slytherins, the other houses have their own stigmas to overcome. Gryffindor is known to be foolhardy and jump into situations that they shouldn’t. Hufflepuff is known to house students who aren’t adept at magic but some very talented people come from that house. Ravenclaw is put on an academic pedestal. It isn’t easy for one of them to have a weakness in a class because they feel inferior to their house name. I think that once you meet your sisters, they will have to come to know you before accepting you. You will have to do the same with them.” Blaise gave this small speech to comfort his lover.

Kristin smiled up at him. He was normally so quiet but when he was around her, he opened up and seemed to have a totally different personality. The two of them had been going out since their third year and were going to marry at the end of school.

“Will you be with me when I go to meet them?” Kristin needed assurances from her rock that he would hold steady for her.

“If you want me to be there I will be. Do you want the others there?” He asked thinking of Draco Malfoy, Theodore Nott, and Ashley Harper.

“I am afraid that It would overwhelm them.” Kristin said with a small smile.

“So write to them and tell them to bring people with them as well, Kitty.” Blaise smiled at the small nod that she gave him. He won again.

Kristin looked up at his satisfied face and punched him in the arm. “Just because you gave me some advice to listen to doesn’t mean that it will ever happen again.” She grinned at the sight of him rubbing his arm. “Next time I’ll hit harder.”

“ooh, please do. You know what that does for me.” He growled out in a soft purr like voice.

A shiver went through Kristin as she quickly hopped on her broom. “You would have to catch me first.” She pushed off into the sky and headed towards home.

Blaise smiled at her form before taking off on his own broom to catch his lady love.
