Chapter Two: Malfoy
Hermiones Point Of View
My mothers arms are wrapped tightly around me, "I'm going to miss you Hermione. Are you coming home for Christmas?" She asks.
"I don't know mom. We'll have to wait and see."
My mom takes a deep steadying breath. "Okay, hunny. Have a good school year."
"I will" I say, breaking out of her hold. "Bye daddy."
"Goodbye darling."
I turn away from my parents and make my way towards the train, pulling my heavy trunk behind me. I reach the steps and push my trunk up. An arm reaches out from inside and pulls it in.
"Thanks." I say, before realizing who it is.
"Are you going to come sit in my compartment?" Seamus asks me.
"No." I tell him, "I have to go to the Head compartment."
"Right" Seamus says, cleary annoyed.
I give him a calculating look and walk away, dragging my trunk down the hall. I pass many people who wave happily at me. I smile in return. I reach the Head compartment, and stow my trunk on the shelf above the seat. I pull out a book and sit down; I open it to my marker and begin to read. The words aren't penetrating my brain, and I find myself reading the same lines over and over again. My mind is upon the Head Boy. I have a pretty good feeling who it is going to be, although I'm wishing earnestly that I'm wrong. My fears are confirmed a few moments later when I see white-blond hair heading my way.
I groan inwardly. 'Great' I think, as I curse Dumbledore in my mind.
The door is pushed open. Draco looks at me and sneers before pulling his own trunk into the room. I arrange my face into a cold look of indifference and lay my eyes back upon my book. After Draco pushes his trunk into it's holder, I feel his cold, calculating eyes on me.
"What?" I ask, not looking up from my book.
"Now, now, Granger. No need to be rude." He says.
I shake my head and don't even bother answering him, I continue reading instead. My feigning interest only lasts a minute or two before I realize that Draco is still looking at me.
"What do you want?" I ask him, this time putting my marker back into my book and looking up into his face.
"Nothing. Just amazed at how a muggleborn managed to become Head Girl."
I sigh, "I'm probably not the first or last, Malfoy."
"I doubt it." He sneered. "How does it feel to think your worthy? Even though you aren't."
"Frankly, It feels great." I say, catching him off gaurd. I'm not rising to him this year.
"So, how's your half-blood boyfriend?" He asks me.
"I don't know. Maybe you should go ask him." I answer scathingly. Seamus and I aren't on the best terms right now. I think Draco picked something up in my voice.
"Trouble in Paradise?" he asks.
I roll my eyes and open my book again. "I'll take that as a yes." he says, and pulls a magazine out of his own trunk.
I don't answer, and instead my thoughts are on Draco. He looks the same as he ever has; his hair slicked back, his cold gray eyes that are always suspicious. His pointed features, and sneering face. Seeing him now, though, has definately done something weird to my stomach. Something that has definately never occured before. It was almost like the fluttering that night that Seamus and I...well I don't want to think about that.
We ride in silence, pondering our own thoughts, and reading our books. The door slides open after an hour or so and the Lunch lady is standing there.
"Anything from the trolly?" She asks us politely. I nod and reach for my trunk, where my money bag is waiting. I get some pumpkin juice and a couple chocolate frogs. I lounge back against the seat, reading my book and eating my chocolate, when Draco clears his throat. I close my eyes and take a breath, opening them and looking at him.
"What?" I ask.
"Chocolate, Granger?"
"Yes." I say.
"Gross." He says.
I give him a quizzical look, one eyebrow raised and an incredulous look in my eyes. I turn back to my reading material.
"Aren't you worried about getting fat? Brave." he says.
I shake my head. "It's never been a problem before, Malfoy."
His attitude is confusing me, I'm trying very hard to decipher his actions. I sip my pumpkin juice and read one more chapter then close my book, put it in my trunk, and sit up. I look at Draco until he aknowledges me.
"Don't you think we should start planning duty schedules, for ourselves and the prefects?" I ask politely.
"You can." Draco says, waving his hand indifferently.
"Excuse me?" I say, not really that shocked by his behavior.
"I said, You can."
"I heard you perfectly well, Malfoy. I think we need to make a few things clear, right now." I say, suddenly angry.
He raises his left eyebrow at me. "Like what, Granger?"
"Like first of all, I'm not your workhorse. I will not be doing all the work and sharing the credit with you." I say, my voice flaring with my anger. "Secondly, our shared Common Room is not going to be the smaller version of the Slytherin Common Room. I will not tolerate you being loud while I'm studying, or interrupting me for any reason. Understand?"
Draco's face is beginning to contort in anger, but I can't honestly say that I care.
"Granger, you don't make the rules around here. I make them. If I'm not willing to help you make some bloody schedules, then you make them. I will have visitors in our Common Room whenever I damn well feel like it, and if we are loud, then deal with it.You will tolerate anything that I do, and if you don't right away, then you will learn to." He says, his face becoming slightly red.
I just smile at him and shake my head. "If you honestly think it's going to be that easy for you, then you have another thing coming." I say harshly. "I'm not going to be pushed around this year." I say it a split second before I realize what I said. Living in the Gryffindor Common Room meant that I had to do basically everything Ron and Harry wanted to do. I haven't even seen them yet.
Draco's eyebrows knit together, and his eyes have question marks in them. I quickly change the subject.
"I'm doing the schedules. If you aren't going to help me then I will let the Professors know who did them." I reach up to my trunk and pull out some blank parchment and a quill.
An hour later I'm still working hard on the schedules, trying to put the Prefects with partners who they will get along with. Thank God I don't have to patrol the corridors with Malfoy, I would rather die. He hasn't been helping me, instead he is reading his stupid magazine. He's continuing to throw me questioning looks over his book, but I'm just ignoring him right now.
I'm finally finished making the charts, and darkness has fallen outside. My stomach rumbles in protest to the lack of food. I pull my robes out of my trunk and start changing. I don't even think about who I'm with. I'm used to just changing in my compartment on the train. I am expecting to arrive at Hogwarts soon.
I pull my shirt over my head and reach for my robes. At this moment I remember I'm with Malfoy, not Ginny. I quickly pull my robes over my head, and I turn to see Malfoy staring at me. His look quickly changes to disgust when he realizes that I'm looking at him.
"If you ever.." He starts to say, but seems to be at a loss for words.
I can feel my cheeks burning. "I'm sorry." I say to him, shaking my head with my eyes closed. "I forgot..."
Draco gives me an odd smile, "Yeah right." he says snarkily.
I feel my eyebrows knit together. "Trust me Malfoy, I didn't do that on purpose."
"Good" He says, "I hope I never have to witness something as digusting as that again."
I roll my eyes. "I'm taking this to the Professors at the front of the train." I tell him, holding up the parchment I was just working on.
He just sneers at me, and looks out the window.
I step out of the compartment quickly.
***
As soon as the door closes behind me I see Seamus.
"Hi" He says, smiling at me.
"Hello." I say politely.
"Are you coming to sit with me now?" he asks.
"No. I'm taking this to the front of the train." I say, holding the parchment in front of me, somewhat like I'm warding Seamus off.
He raises an eyebrow at me. "I think we need to talk."
I nod. "Okay, maybe after the feast?"
"Okay"
I quickly dash off after his answer. Avoidance. I'm not even sure what's wrong with me. I just know that I'm embarassed and don't feel like I can spend any more time with him. He's not sensitive to my feelings and he never will be.
I reach the middle of the train and glance into a compartment. I groan inwardly.
"Hermione!" Harry yells at me, pulling me into his arms and planting a kiss firmly on my lips.
"Harry" I say, with very little gusto. "I told you, you have to stop kissing me." I look over his shoulder and see Ron, with the stupid look on his face that he seems to carry while I'm around.
Harry just smiles and hugs me even more feircly. "I missed you this summer." He whispers seductively into my ear.
"I need to go." I say to him firmly, pulling myself out of his grasp.
"But-" he starts. I'm already walking away.
'Why can't he just get it?' I ask myself as I'm walking away. 'I don't want to be his girlfriend. I'm not even sure if I want to be his friend anymore. His advances are bothering me.' I take a deep breath and knock on the Professor's compartment. The door slides open and Professor Snape is standing there, looking at me in distaste.
"I," I say with much emphasis, "finished the schedule."
Snape's lip curls. "Good." he says, taking it out of my hands. Without another word he shuts the door in my face.
"Your welcome." I say irritably to the closed door. I turn and walk away.
***
I'm sitting in a carriage that smells like mould, Harry is beside me, annoying me. His hand is on my thigh and he's rubbing it unconciously. I've already pulled away once. Ron is across from me, alternating between looking at me and blushing, and glaring at Harry's hand.
"Where's Ginny?" I ask politely, knowing full well that she is in love with Harry.
"Dunno" says Harry vaugely, more focused on his hand which is moving it's way upwards.
I slap his hand. "Stop it Harry." I say to him forcefully. Why does it have to be just us three in this carriage?
The carriage slows and comes to a stop. I breathe a sigh of relief and flee, going up the stone steps quickly. Draco is standing off to the side a bit, smirking at me. He looks at me, then at Harry and Ron who both look absolutely love sick. He sneers at me and raises his eyebrows. I shake my head in disgust and retreat into the school.
I sit down in the middle of Gryffindor table and pray that the seats are taken by others quickly. Others that don't include Harry and Ron. Unfortunately, they beat the rest, actually pulling Seamus backwards by his robes so Harry could sit there. Seamus gives me a look of deepest loathing, like it's my fault. I shrug at him.
Harry immediately places his hand on my leg again, I shoot him a look and whisper "Stop it, Harry." but to no avail.
I sit through the sorting, not speaking to anyone. I occasionally turn my head and Ron is just staring at me. I look forwards quickly and see silver eyes staring at me through the crowds between us. I turn back to Harry, who is slowly pulling my robes up so he can put his hand underneath. I feel my muscles tense. "Stop it Harry!" I whisper fiercely into his ear. He ignores me. He's got the robes up high enough for his taste now. He turns around to look behind him. He is sitting on my left, and his right hand brushes against my panties. My eyebrows knit together and I look back too. There is no one there. Harry is pretending to be watching someone behind us, so he can touch me inappropriately. His hand moves my panties aside and two of his fingers slip inside me. There is nothing I can do without causing a commotion. My eyes widen as he drives into me with as much force as he can without drawing attention, I start trembling. Not out of pleasure. I look around quickly to see if anyone has noticed anything while Harry is pumping his fingers. Everyone is watching the sorting. Everyone except Malfoy. His eyes are on me, he's watching me curiously. I give him a look of contempt and push Harry's fingers out. I don't care if anyone notices.
Harry looks around at me and the anger on his face is frightening. "What are you doing?" He whispers forcefully, angrily, inches away from my face.
"I'm going to my room. I'm not hungry anymore!" I whisper back, adjusting my robes before standing. I walk away from the table and out of the Great Hall. This is when I remember that I don't even know where the Head Dorms are, or the password. I sigh to myself.
Great.
I turn and go back into the Hall, sitting on the very last seat of the table far away from Harry and Ron. I eat my meal in silence.
