In Dreams they Come
Sleep claimed him only reluctantly, and when it did, he dreamed.
Lily appeared to him, beautiful as ever, and smiling.
"James my love," she said, her voice as rich and melodic as he remembered. "I'm so glad for you. Please be happy."
"Lily, I'm so sorry. I should have been there, I should have done something more to protect you, I should have..."
"Sh, love. You did everything you could. You live your life now, darling. You live for Harry, and Sirius, and Remus, and Regulus. That's what you should do now."
"Lily, don't leave me again. I don't know how I'll manage without you."
She grinned. "Silly goose," she admonished. "You've got Regulus. He'll take care of you now. You tell my baby that I loved him, when you see him."
"Harry.. Oh, Lils, we had to leave him with those wretched relatives of yours, I'm sorry, I couldn't even -"
She held up a quelling hand. "James Potter," she said seriously. "You keep an eye out on my baby, or I'll never forgive you."
"Yes, mother," James muttered, but it wasn't angry. "Ah, Lils. I love you."
"I love you too, James. Get some sleep."
The dream changed then, and suddenly James was back in his parents house with Sirius, and they were sixteen again.
"Jim, you take care of my baby brother, or I'll flatten you."
"Pads?" It had been almost a year since he'd last seen his friend, and James was nearly crushed under an overwhelming loneliness.
"You take care of him, hear me? If you break his heart, I'll break a lot more than your face." The easy grin on Sirius's face reminded him of Regulus, and he couldn't help but nod.
"I'll keep him good, Sirs," he whispered, and the dream changed again, except this time there was no one else, just himself and an empty house...

Sirius will flip his lid when he finds out what Regulus and James have gotten up to while they were in hiding XDD I'm looking forward to writing it. Please go read and review The Butterfly Effect!
