They had been in the same living quarters for about two weeks now. They had carefully avoided seeing each other thus far. Draco kept busy with his numerous conquests, and Hermione spent most of her time in the library, or with Harry and Ron.
As she left to go to Potions class, she sighed in the impending dread. Snape had taken an interest in torturing Harry, Ron, and her. He had assigned seating this year. He claimed it was to maximize their potential, but really she felt it was just to separate them. She was paired with none other than Draco. She loathed having to work with him. He constantly tried to undermine her, and make her look incompetent to Snape. Oh well, she was trying to take each class at a time.
She arrived at class and took her seat. Draco casually strolled in after about five minutes. If that had been her, Ron or Harry, points would have been deducted. However, Snape treated Draco in a class all of his own, and he could do no wrong in his eyes. Once the lesson started Snape wrote something on the board. Hermione’s eyes got bigger when she read the one word that he had written. Veritiserum. They were making a truth potion.
Draco and she got to work, and he was surprisingly helpful today. When she asked him why he was being helpful, he just smirked at her, and said, “No reason.” Hermione had a heightened sense of suspicion. When she went to help Ron who had been having trouble with Millicent, who was his partner, Draco slipped something into their potion.
A little while later, Snape made them all test their potions, to see if they had successfully made the potion. He used this as an opportunity to humiliate the Gryffindors.
He had Harry admit that he was attracted to Pansy Parkinson, who was his partner. Pansy was disgusted by this admission and told him that it would never happen. Ron admitted that he was in love with Hermione, who was surprised. She had spent many years being secretly in love with Ron too, however, she just didn’t feel that way anymore, and was angry that things were going to be awkward between them. Snape of course took this opportunity to ask her who she was attracted to and instead of answering Ron, she surprisingly said, Draco Malfoy.
The room hushed in silence. Draco smirked and told her, “In your dreams, Mudblood.” He was secretly pleased that she admitted that.
She looked so uncomfortable, and then she suddenly stood up and ran out of the room. Draco looked so pleased with himself, Harry ran over there with the intention of smacking that smirk right off his face, when Snape pulled Harry back and said, “Mr. Potter, if you harm one hair on Mr. Malfoy’s head and you will spend every weekend in detention for the remainder of the year.”
Malfoy just smiled because he had gotten away with it, and he thought about his plans for that evening. He had every intention of making things difficult for the mudblood this year. It was all starting with his plans for the evening which was already in motion. Hermione was going to play right into his hands; she just didn’t know it yet. The bell rang, and class was now over, he made his way back to the common room.
