Memories

Harry and Draco moved hurriedly through the silent halls of Hogwarts, making their way silently to the grounds. They ran across the grounds and secluded themselves behind a large tree just inside the Forbidden Forest.

“So, a Gryffindor? Interesting. Makes keeping this friendship going a challenge.”

“Well, we’ll just have to work that little bit harder, won’t we?” Harry paused and looked Draco in the eyes. “Are we just friends? Because it feels like more.”

“I know.” Draco laughed. “Ever since that day in Madam Malkin’s I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. I’ve never felt like this before.”

“Are you scared?”

“I don’t know. A bit. I’m scared of not knowing what’s coming. I’m scared of what could happen if we take this further. But, mostly, I’m scared that I want to be with you forever.”

Harry smiled at him and felt himself lean towards Draco, as if the two of them were magnetically drawn to each other. Harry had a thousand thoughts all condense down into one single consciousness: he felt safe with this boy, this person who he was supposed to hate. Their lips brushed against each other and they latched onto each other, tangling their fingers in soft hair and winding arms around lithe torsos. Draco tentatively licked at Harry’s soft lips, praying that he would be allowed entrance. Harry’s lips opened and their tongues slid smoothly against each other. Harry moaned into Draco’s mouth, making the blonde grip him tighter to him.

They broke away from each other, slowly breathing. Harry leaned his head against Draco’s. Draco ran his hands along Harry’s back. He felt a tear on his cheek that he knew wasn’t his. He opened his eyes and looked at Harry.

“What’s wrong? Harry, tell me, please?” Draco pleaded. Harry sank down the tree until he was seated on the ground. As he felt Draco sink down beside him, wrapping an arm around him, his sobs reached a peak and he attempted to bury himself in his companion. Draco didn’t know what was wrong, but he was silently thankful that Harry was with someone while he had this little breakdown, instead of alone.

After what seemed like a lifetime of listening to and feeling someone he cared about cry, Draco felt Harry regain his composure. Harry remained buried in Draco’s embrace.

“No one has ever cared about me. Not like this, not with this kind of affection. I guess it just kinda scared me a bit,” Harry said quietly.

“What about your mother, your father?”

“I don’t remember them.”

“Your aunt and uncle? Friends? Other family? There must be someone,” Draco said softly in disbelief. Surely there had to have been someone, at least one person who cared about his Harry. Sweet Merlin, Draco thought, did I just think of him as my Harry?

Harry let out a sort of half chuckle, half snort. “My Aunt and Uncle just keep me because they have to. They don’t want me. Just because I’m the Boy-Who-Lived in the magical world, doesn’t mean that I’m a pampered prince. My family hate me, always have done. Hell, I slept in the cupboard under the stairs until Hagrid came looking for me!”

“Seriously?” Draco asked. Harry nodded. “I care. I care a lot. And I’m not sure what this is between us, or where is will lead, but I’m not willing to end it.”

“I get that. But I have a small request to make,” Harry asked in a timid voice.

“Anything.”

“I don’t want people to know. I want this to be us, just us. I’ve never had that before, something that was just mine. Something that only I got to have.”

Draco smiled and leaned in and kissed Harry again, gently this time. “No problem, I’m all yours.”

And he was. They remained secret and secluded for the next seven years, each of them only telling those they trusted completely. They fought and made up, though never going too far, Harry never being quite ready for that step. In his mind, he didn’t want Draco to have to live with the memory of them being that intimate if he was killed. It led to some spectacular fights, most of which were public, but they always reconciled.

And on the eve of the final battle, they promised themselves to each other, to live together in a bonding if they both survived. Which they did. Because Draco and Harry loved.
