The First Day

That evening after his meeting with Professor McGonagall Hunter makes his way through the Gryffindor commons room and up the stairs to his new dorm room. His meeting with Professor McGonagall went how he expected. She gave him a lecture about the school dress code, docked Gryffindor 10 points and he had detention with her tomorrow night. He just nodded and told her he'd be there then left.

Now he was walking into his room when he saw his roommates arguing about something. Paying them no mind he walked towards his bed and opened his trunk. He took out his guitar, his half empty pack of cigarettes and ashtray. Setting the ashtray on his nightstand he pulls out a cigarette and lights it with the Zippo from his back pocket. Taking a drag he begins tuning his guitar as the argument suddenly stops.

Some red head freckled face kid comes storming over to him yelling something about no smoking in the school. Hunter ignores him as he flicks the ashes into the ashtray before taking another drag.

Ron is still fuming from his argument with Seamus over what his mum had said about Harry. Now he had this new guy, who had no regards for the rules, smoking in HIS room.

"I said there's no smoking at Hogwarts." Ron yelled at him. "Put that thing out right now our I'll give you detention." He threatened, showing off his shining new prefects badge.

Hunter takes another drag of his cigarette before calmly asking. "When and Who?" Flicking the ashes into the ashtray as he waits his second detention assignment of the day.

"What did you say?" Ron demands moving towards the new guy. His face is as red as his hair and his fists are clenched so tightly that his knuckles are turning white. The argument now forgotten the other boys quickly move to stop Ron from doing something stupid.

Hunter takes yet another drag of his cigarette as he watches three of the other four boys restrain the red head, who's struggling to get to him. "I asked WHEN is my detention and WHO am I to report to." While he emphasized each of the words from his previous question neither his voice nor his manner showed any type of emotion.

In fact since he arrived at Hogwarts they had seen no indication that he felt anything at all except for MAYBE boredom. It was then that Harry intervened and stepping between Ron and the new guy asked politely. "Would you please stop smoking?"

Hunter nodded and put the cigarette out in the ashtray. With out another word to the others he simply went back to tuning his guitar. The other four boys spent the rest of the evening trying to calm the irate red head down enough to go to sleep.

The next day at breakfast Hunter once again sat away from the other Gryffindors and ate his meal in silence. Professor McGonagall silently handed him his schedule without looking at him. His robes were still in his trunk since he still didn't care to wear them. A pair of faded blue jeans and a white T-shirt replaced his black shirt and jeans. He still wore the same work boots and the same old biker jacket. Looking over his schedule Hunter finishes eating and follows the other fifth years down to the dungeon for Potions.

Once inside Hunter takes a seat as far in the back as he can find. He sets up his workstation silently as the other students continue to file in and talk among themselves.

As the Potion's Master enters the room the others grow quiet. Hunter pulls a notepad and pen from his jacket pocket and begins writing something down. As Professor Snape displays the assignment on the black board Hunter puts his notes and pen away and goes to work on the potion.

Half way through the class Professor Snape begins checking on their progress. Hunter pays him no mind and doesn't even seem to hear the comments and snide remarks the teacher makes about the others' work.

When Professor Snape finally makes his way to him, Hunter ignores him and continues working quietly on his potion. The Potion’s Master is slightly annoyed by the fact that he can find no fault with the new student's work. He's irritated that his presence appears to have no effect on the young man and out raged by his total disregard for the school's dress code.

"Mr. Catiar can you please tell me at what point should you add the juice of the limpwart root and what procedure must you follow when adding the juice."

Hunter doesn't bother looking at the teacher as he continued to stir and check his potion. "The juice must be added last and stirred in two minutes before the potion is left to simmer over night." He answers loud enough for the others to hear. "While adding the juice you must continually pour it in while stirring five times clockwise then four times counter clockwise." Hunter then begins adding the juice in the manner in which he described.

"Once all the juice has been added you must continue to stir for two full minutes any longer or shorter and you risk ruining the entire potion." Once all his juice has been added he continues explaining the last of the procedure. "Your directions are in complete though."

For the first time in all their time in Hogwarts the other students see color actually appear on Professor Snape's face. "My Directions are..." The red-faced Potion's Master begins.

"Are incomplete." Hunter finishes calmly. "The potion should be stirred for thirty seconds clockwise, then for thirty seconds counter clockwise, followed by once clockwise and once counter clockwise alternating pattern for an addition thirty seconds. Finally stirred clockwise for the remaining thirty seconds."

The students that weren't stunned into paralysis by his comment that the professor had made a mistake or the teacher's reaction were currently following the new kids directions hoping to salvage their potions.

Hunter didn't seem to notice as he continued to finish up his own potion. "Your directions will yield satisfactory results but the missing portion is required for optimal effect."

Snape's face is now redder then Ron's hair and Harry can swear there's smoke coming out of his ears and nose. Fearing that the Potion Professor’s head may literally explode at any moment he taps his friends on the shoulder and signals for them to join him taking cover under the table.

At the precise moment the three of them dive for safety Snape's temper explodes and he begins tearing into the new student. HOW DARE YOU SHOW SUCH DISRESPECT TO A FACULTY MEMBER OF THIS SCHOOL? WHAT GIVES YOU THE GALL TO THINK THE RULES DON'T APPLY TO YOU? YOUR ATTITUDE AND DISREPECT SHALL NOT GO UNPUNISHED AS LONG AS I AM HEAD OF SLYTHERIN HOUSE. YOU WILL REPORT HERE FOR DETENTION EVERY NIGHT THIS WEEK AND THAT WILL BE 200 HOUSE POINTS FROM GRYFFINDOR FOR YOUR ARIGANCE AND I WILL PERSONALLY SPEAK WITH THE HEADMASTER AND YOUR HEAD OF HOUSE ABOUT YOUR INSOLANCE.

"I can't make it tonight or tomorrow but I'll report for detention after dinner the following night." Hunter says as he begins cleaning his supplies. He had finished his potion while professor Snape had gone off on his little tyraid. Before the Professor can begin to speak again he continues. "I already have detention with McGonagall tonight and tomorrow." He begins putting his supplies away without another word.

Professor Snape's temperament only grew more enraged by the unmitigated gall this young man has displayed. First he ignores the Potions Master, then he reschedules his own detention and now he refers to a faculty member without using their proper title. "That's an additional 50 points from Gryffindor for your cheek Mr. Catiar. Care to go for more.

Collecting his belongings Hunter rises from his seat and prepares to leave the class. "Take as many house points as you wish." He tells Professor Snape. "The only ones you are hurting are them." He points to the other Gryffindors in the class, all of whom now appeared about ready to murder him for costing them 250 points in the span of five minutes.

"I personally don't care who wins your stupid House Cup." He says making his way to stand by the door. "I never asked to come here," he says to no one though they could all hear him. "I never asked to be made a part of this stupid competition." He turns around and for the first time looks Snape directly in the eyes. The Professor cringes for a moment at the vast emptiness he finds there. "So just leave me out of it."

As the bell rings to end class Hunter walks out the door leaving everyone else too stunned to move.
