Beginning and End
Five months ago, odd things began happening at Hogwarts. At first, things began simply vanishing. Portraits of headmasters went first, then muggle items: the clothes muggle born students brought, toys, trinkets. Older relics of the castle went next. One day Hermione walked by a suit of armor, and not an hour later it had vanished.
The professors started looking for an answer. The first few had been dismissed as pranks, but now there was no denying that something was amiss.
Harry, Ron and Hermione hadn’t really paid attention to the disappearances. They had gone to visit Hagrid, as they tried to do often this year.
“Just as long as he doesn’t try to bake anything,” Ron was saying. Hermione looked up at Hagrid’s hut, distractedly.
They knocked. They knocked again. They knocked a third time. After a pause Hagrid opened the door.
“Oh, jus’ you lot.” He ushered them inside and, to Ron’s horror, produced a plate of leftover rolls he had made
yesterday. Just as the half giant had set down the plate on the table, Hagrid, without a sound, vanished.
Hermione screamed.
“Hermione, you have any idea what’s going on?” she heard the reluctance in Harry’s voice as he asked.
“No, Harry, I have no idea,” here she chewed her lower lip. They had scrambled back up to Hogwarts after Hagrid’s disappearance and had informed McGonagall. She had sent them back to Gryfindor tower with a concerned look on her face.
“There ought to be something in the library,” Hermione thought. “Ron, you and Harry go back up, I’m going to see if I can find anything.”
The boys left, feeling relieved; Hermione was back in her element, research. She wouldn’t let them down.
Hours had passed and she had found little. There were books about spells that made certain items disappear, but in most cases the caster had to be nearby. Other books suggested the ideas of invisible thieves, disappearing magical creatures, magical mishaps, loose spells, but none could explain the disappearance of the half-giant.
Wearily she walked back down to dinner in the great hall. As she drew nearer, though, she felt the tension in the air, the buzzing unease of the students around her, the whispered conversations that whipped through the throngs like wind in a tree.
Becoming frantic she shoved past until she entered the hall where Ron stood in a circle of teachers. His face was the same shade and hue as his hair and he was babbling and stuttering to the surrounding professors.
Her heart froze, what had happened, and where was Harry?
She sprinted across the floor and McGonagall turned to her as she approached.
“Ah, Miss Granger, we were hoping to find you. Harry is not with you?”
Hermione, dumbstruck, shook her head no.
McGonagall’s expression, already stern, turned stony and, just a bit, fearful.
“Miss Granger, you are sure you do not know his location? No? Then it appear Mr. Harry Potter has also disappeared.”
Severus sat at his desk, wondering if he should just do it. Yes, yes, she needed to know. No, she already had her future laid out before her. Yes, how could they live with the possibility of greater things waiting for them? No, no he couldn’t ruin what live she could have, and as much as he hated him, he couldn’t ruin his life either. But to never have the chance…
Finally he beckoned his black owl Regina to him and tied the letter to her leg furiously, before he could change his mind again. He sent her out the window and away, already cursing himself for doing it.
