Chapter 2: His Soul Is Torn and Bruised
They were back at the burrow, and Ron sat at the kitchen table, nursing a mug of coffee, while Molly was upstairs, with a crying, broken, Irish girl. Before they went to arrest Malfoy, they had heard that he was in the company of a girl. A girl they had observed to be a muggle. Ron couldn’t believe this when he heard it. Malfoy and a muggle; he was very interested to meet this girl.
He had observed her, from the apartment to the Ministry of Magic, and then from there back to the Burrow. She was beautiful, no doubt. Her pale skin and sky blue eyes looked beautiful with her long dark hair. More than that, though, she had a confidence about her. Even when he noticed the broken look about her walk, she still walked with a purpose. Her looks weren’t enough, though, that could make Draco accept muggles, he thought.
At that moment, he heard Molly and Gemma come down the stairs. The Ministry had asked Arthur to take her home with him, once they assessed that she was indeed, a muggle, and that she was not a threat to anyone. Molly seated her across from Ron. She was no longer crying, but her eyes were puffy and she just stared at Ron with a blank look.
Molly handed her a cup of coffee, and she held it close to her sweatshirt, which Ron had noticed, seemed to be Malfoy’s faded, old Quidditch sweatshirt.
“Dear,” Molly said sitting down next to the girl, “My husband and his colleague will be joining us soon, and then will you be ready to talk?”
Gemma looked down at her cup of coffee that she had yet to taste.
“I will only talk, because he told me too.”
Molly looked at Ron, and sighed quietly.
Gemma looked over at Molly.
“No, I mean…I really appreciate, you know, that I am still not at that ministry place. It was so…unwelcoming there.”
She put down her coffee and hugged her arms around her. At that moment, Ron, noticed that his father and Lupin had walked in quietly behind the three sitting at the table.
“It’s just…” the girl continued, not noticing the new people in the room, “He was…Draco is,” she quickly wiped away the welling of tears, “the most important person in my life. I need him; he needs me.” She then noticed Arthur standing in the doorway, and her expression became hard.“And you took him away from me.” she finished, as she again picked up her coffee and stared into it.
Arthur sighed in a similar fashion to his wife as him and Lupin walked around the table, and took seats next to Ron.
“Gemma, this is Remus Lupin; he works with me at the ministry.”
“Oh,” was all she said as she took a small sip of her strong coffee.
“I know you are upset.” Lupin said, gazing intently at the girl, “but we had to arrest him. Do you know what he did?”
Gemma just glared at him.
“He conspired to kill a great man in our world, not to mention countless other crimes against our people!” Lupin said, exasperated.
“You don’t know what you are talking about!” Gemma hissed back, slamming her coffee mug on the table. “Did you see the boy you arrested? Did he look like a murderer?! No!”
Molly quickly got up and grabbed a rag to clean up the spilled coffee.
“Dear! Please, calm down!” she said
“I’m sorry.” she said, clenching her hands together, realizing this wasn’t getting her anywhere.
“That’s a good girl,” Molly said, patting her shoulder. “Now, Remus,” she said, glaring at him, “you need to calm down too.”
Remus ran his hands over his eyes. “I am sorry, Gemma.”
Gemma looked over at him, pushing her long hair out of her face. “I know that when you look at Draco, you see a bad person; he warned me of that, but when I look at him I see something else.”
“What do you see?” Ron said, finally working up the courage to talk.
Gemma looked at him, with eyes full of fervor. “I see a boy, who doesn’t know where his future lies in his world. A boy that has seen so much rage, and pain, and…and death, in his lifetime, that his soul is torn and bruised. I see a boy…that…that needs me to fix him. Please, please, he needs me!” she finished, looking hopefully at Arthur.
“Gemma, I truthfully, don’t know what is going to happen, but the first step is for you to tell us everything you know, everything that has happened since you met him, everything he has told you. We need to know.” With that, Arthur flicked his wand, and a small tape recorder appeared.
“Ready?”
“Where do you want me to start?
“Right from the beginning.”
“From when I met Severus?”
Lupin and Arthur both quietly gasped, as Ron looked at them wide-eyed. They had been looking for Snape as long as they had been looking for Malfoy, but they had no trace of him. This girl may prove to be more powerful than they had thought at the beginning.
“Yes, Gemma, please start there.” Arthur whispered as he pressed the play button on the recorder.
