Chapter 2

Hermione stayed in Oronte for the rest of the summer. She was given her own treehouse which was very elaborate and quite large. She was up near the top of the tree and got lots of sunlight. She found that she quite liked the open air. She spent her days practicing everything she had learned and her nights writing more songs which she would sing and play on the Varya when no one was around to listen.
One day, in the middle of August, the letter from Hogwarts came announcing that she had been made head girl. She squealed with joy and showed Ilma who had come to visit.
"That's wonderful dear! Listen, there is a reason I came to visit. I just wanted to impress on you before you go back to school the importance of only telling those you trust what you are and what you can do. Remember also that you have to wear something silver and something black at all times. They are your soul colors. The colors themselves usually mean nothing but they boost your power and if you don't wear them it weakens you so try to wear them as much as possible. The more the better. You can hide your ears with a simple spell. Also, I want you to order your school things by owl instead of going to the shops. I think you should take as much time as possible to adjust."
"I understand Grandmother."
"I really am proud of you. Head girl." Hermione beamed with pride.
"I am proud of you too missstresss." Slizor hissed.
The next two weeks were torture for Hermione. She wanted to see her friends. She hadn't had any contact with them all summer because owls from the outside could not get into Oronte. She desperately wanted to see her friends so she was ready very early on September the first. Ilma came to visit her at ten o'clock.
"I have one last lesson for you. It is much like what you call apparating but from what I have heard it is much more comfortable. All you have to do is picture your destination in your mind and will yourself to be there. When you open your eyes you will be. This skill is called, simply, shifting. It is best to shift to a discreet place though. Perhaps into a corner of Platform 9 and 3/4."
"I understand Grandmother. I shall miss you. Thank you for everything." The two embraced and then Ilma gestured for Hermione to try shifting. Grasping Slizor and her trunk Hermione pictured the farthest corner of the platform and when she opened her eyes she was staring at the scarlet steam engine that would take her back to school.
Hermione got many strange looks as she walked along the platform. No doubt because of her strange attire, silver hair, great beauty, and the snake wrapped happily around her neck hissing at anyone who got too close.
"Slizor don't do that. I don't care if anyone gets close to me."
"As you ssssay Missstresss. I must sssay I am excited about ssseeing thisss Hogwartsss."
"You should be. It is magnificant but we have a long train ride ahead of us." Hermione strolled along the train until she heard two familiar voices.
"We haven't heard a word from her all summer Ron. Do you think we did something to upset her?" Harry was asking worridly.
"Nah. She was probably too busy reading Hogwarts a History for the millionth time." Forgetting herself Hermione barged in.
"I most certainly was not!" Harry and Ron looked at her strangely. Hermione was so used to her new looks by now that she sometimes forgot that anything had changed.
"Who are you?" Ron asked. He seemed somewhat mesmerized by her.
"Oh snap out of it Ronald!"
"Have we met?" Ron said with a goofy smile on his face.
"It's me guys. Hermione. You know, helped brew polyjuice potion, helped rescue Sirius, got petrified in our second year? That Hermione." Harry looked at her closely.
"You're joking. You look nothing like Hermione." He said.
"Yeah, well, I changed over the summer."
"What's with the weird clothes?" Ron asked, prodding the silvery dress she wore. Slizor slithered down towards his hand which Ron abruptly withdrew.
"You will treat my missstresss with ressspect!" He hissed. Harry jumped as if seeing the snake for the first time which he probably was. Slizor blended in well with Hermione's hair and dress.
"Who are you?" Harry hissed. "And tell me truthfully who isss thisss?"
"I am Ssslizor and thisss isss my missstresss Hermione Granger. You can ssspeak my tongue? I have never met a ssspeaker before."
"The othersss I have ssspoken with have not been friendly." Harry looked back up at Hermione. "He says it's you so I guess it is. Wow, you really have changed. How come you didn't owl us over the summer? We were getting worried."
"So I heard. I was in a place that owls from the outside can't get into and I was working hard." Hermione looked at the sun in the sky to gage the time, one of her lessons with Ilma, and squeaked. Excuse me boys, I have to be down in the prefects compartment. I'm head girl you know." Hermione looked at Ron to see if he approved but he had fainted dead away.
