CHAPTER 2 Rude awakening
--------------------------------------------
The boy with the pale blonde hair and steel in his eyes woke up earlier than his dormmates,as he always did.He didn't feel different from any other day, except that it was Saturday, and 6 AM. He sighed. Being an early bird did have it's good sides, though. On the weekdays, the others would come down to the common room, scruffy and tired-looking,and he would sit on the windowsill,or reading in the sofa, feet on the table, looking perfectly polished. All to keep up appearances. He would also wait atleast ten minutes after the last one of them went to bed at night,so as to appear to be the one who slept the least, and worked the most.
It made the others put him higher,he knew that. What don't you do for a little superiority, Draco? He chuckled at himself, and got up silently. He dressed himself in his black and silver cloak, and wandered into the prefects bathroom. Since it was Saturday, he wouldn't mind a long, hot bath, but decided for a quick shower instead. As he walked to the common room a mere fifteen minutes later, he sat down to write his mother a letter.
He found a spare piece of parchment, a quill and ink, and wrote "Dear mother.I am well. Draco." In all regards, it wasn't as much a letter as a note, but it would have to do. He didn't like to write it,send it,nor having to do so, but he had to, since not doing so would ensure him a massive amount of of hysteric letters both with and without codes and questions his mother was sure only he could answer.Oh,his mother.. Draco honestly didn't really understand why she was so hysteric..It's not like the deatheaters will attack me, or anything, he thought. She was probably just worried about Dumbledore and all of the other goody two shoes all around him.
After his brother got banned from the family a few years ago, he had been the golden child after all.Not that he minded that at all, of course. He smirked. His older brothers stupid actions was the best thing that had ever happened to him.Of course, it had it's down sides. Not having someone to blame, and double the pressure. Draco put his shoes on,and tied his shoelaces sloppily. He almost tripped as he reached for the now sealed parchment, but didn't bother to tie them right. He blushed a bit, and quickly looked around, glad no one had seen him. Draco Malfoy - the klutz! That's a Draco very few had seen, fortunately.
The stroll in the castle was a silent one.It felt good to just walk around, and feel the magic surrounding him, pulsating from every brick, stone and painting, without being on his guard for an ambush or upcoming fight. The castle itself felt calm,as if sleeping. He wandered dreamily, almost lightheaded up the stairs to the owlery, not pausing to watch the sun rise, but entering and beckoning to his owl in one move.Draco tied the black envelope to the birds talons with a silver string, and watched it take off. As he turned to leave,he tripped over one of his loose shoelaces, and fell towards the doorway, where, appearing like from thin air, suddenly was Harry Potter.
"Ouch!" Malfoy fell straight onto him, knocking him down to the floor, landing quite hard, with his head on Harrys chest. Harry rubbed the back of his head, and found it to be a bit tender, but mostly unharmed from it's greeting with the stone floor. He looked down into Malfoys dazed eyes, emerald locked in silver, for what seemed like an eternity. Harry felt like an anvil had hit his head. His heart pounded like crazy, and the most embarrassing thing was happening to him. Harry blushed, and looked away, trying very hard not to surrender to his bodily functions, that had to just be happening later than usual this morning. He was sure Malfoy could feel it too,and started panicking.
"Eh.. mind getting up, Malfoy?" he asked, his voice almost as gruffy as when he first woke up. Malfoy scrambled to his feet, a pink hue on his delicate cheeks, offering a helping hand to Harry. Harry hesitated for a moment, but took the hand, and pulled himself up, ending up an inch short of a nose to nose situation with Malfoy.Harry mumbled a thanks, but couldn't get himself to move away.Malfoy bent down, not letting go of Harrys hand, and not moving away.
He picked up Harrys letter, and handed it to him.Harry felt the warmth of Malfoy so close. He was warmer than he acted, that was for sure."Thank you,D..eh..Ma..eh..Thanks." He leaned a little forward as he spoke, taking the envelope from Malfoys unoccupied hand, and almost touching Malfoys lips with his own, before pulling hastily away. "I ..eh..better..y' know.."
Harry reluctantly let go of Dracos hand, and waved his letter uncertainly about, blushing as red as a tomato. He lifted his gaze to Draco's eyes, and found them to be puzzled.Riddles wrapped in silver. "Yeah,of course..uhm..see you..Uhm..sorry." Draco mumbled, before he vanished out the doorway, down the stairs, almost running.
Left at the top of the stairs stood Harry Potter, heart ablaze in the morning sun.
