It could have been different. She could have been different. She could have had friends and memories that weren’t full of taunts and betrayal. Those people, they called themselves her friends, but she heard them talk. Talk about all her beliefs, and the way they would squash them like little bugs not worthy of life.

Oh, yes she heard. At least her enemies had the courtesy not to lie to her. But her friends…they were the horrible ones. She only had two people who never judged her, never made her feel less. Neville… with his sweet, considerate smiles and little secret; the one he likes to kiss behind walls. And of course there was her creature, Milli, she called herself. She never judged, seeming not to have the time nor strength for such mortal matters.

Luna spent time with her everyday. They sat in silence, both lost in their own worlds. Sometimes Luna awoke from her dreams before Milli did, so she watched her. The way a small smile would filter over her lips, staying for a few seconds and just as slowly as it had appeared it would disappear.

Milli was never in a hurry. She was never competing. Never looking for attention, or wanting to be the smartest in class. She never tried to prove that she was better than what people gave her credit for. Milli never tried to be beautiful... she wasn’t.

Luna remembered a time when Milli had been beautiful. It had been raining. The sky was gray, the rain melodic. Luna had went outside for a walk, not minding the rain; people did not walk in the rain, did not taunt and tease, so she walked. She walked the same distance she so often did. Not seeing anything, not feeling the rain on her skin.

At the edge of the forest is where she found Milli. Under a tree, Milli had sat.

Her neck had been raised to the heavens, her eyes closed. Her mouth had been smooth, no scars seen. She was flushed, a rosy tinge on her cheeks and neck. Her blouse plastered on her form. Luna thought she had beautiful breasts.

She stood there as Milli sat, she uttered not a word…minutes, perhaps hours passed.

When Milli opened her eyes, they were unfocused. She finally saw Luna, really saw her not just the blurred image that was the face of the people around her. She stood, did not say a word and walked away.

Luna did not move, she didn’t follow. She thought…

For the first time, her mind was not in a haze. But her stomach lurched, and it was neither pleasant nor unpleasant. For the first time there was a pain in her… a pain that wasn’t pain at all.
