Dancing Through Life
And so two quiet months passed. Well, as quietly as they could, what with the controversial uproar surrounding the acceptance of Harry Potter into the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Now it was the end of November and the deadline to find a partner for the Yule Ball loomed the way an impending hurricane looms.
The Golden Trio (aka Harry, Ron, and Hermione) sat at a table in the Gryffindor common room, books spread every which way, but very little actual studying being done.
“Harry,” Hermione began and the other two groaned, “have you—“
“No ‘Mione, I have absolutely no bloody clue as to what the egg means.” Harry cut in swiftly. Hermione stuck out her tongue childishly and glared.
“That wasn’t what I was going to ask, Harry James Potter!” The boys giggled. “I was going to ask if you ever figured out what that episode with you and Malfoy was all about?”
Harry sighed and stopped writing. It had been two months, two whole months, and she hadn’t let up about ‘The Incident’ once. And the strange thing was that nothing had happened since. The only thing he’d noticed that was out of the ordinary was that the girls were extra giggly. This however was only due to the proximity of the Yule Ball. And the fact that Draco [and when had he become Draco instead of Malfoy?] seemed to be staring at him as well as Cedric Diggory, a Hufflepuff seventh year [a very cute seventh year, now that he thought about it]. This Harry could not explain.
That is until Cedric spelled it out, quite dramatically, for him.
It was a lovely Indian summer day and most of the students were basking in the autumn sun in the courtyard of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Cedric Diggory was holding court with the Hufflepuff upper forms, but no one was really paying them much attention.
Then Cedric began to sing.
“The trouble with school is they always try to teach the wrong lessons. Believe me I’ve been kicked out of enough of them to know.”
This statement caused to twitter and Harry was sitting close enough to Draco to hear him mutter,
“Hufflepoufs.”
under his breath. Cedric continued.
“They want you to become less callow, less...shallow. But I say why invite stress in? Stop studying strife and learn to live the unexamined life.”
Cedric stood gracefully and now had everyone’s attention. Draco harrumphed and Harry silently agreed. Bloody pretty-boy.
“Dancing through life, skimming the surface, gliding were turf is smooth. Life’s more painless when you’re brainless. Why think too hard? When its so soothing!”
He executed a bit of fancy footwork as the impossible music began to make itself known again.
“Dancing through life! No need to tough it, when you can slough it off as I do! Nothing else matters, but knowing nothing matters, its just life...so keep dancing through!”
He began to dance a bit faster, sweeping up Fred [or was it George?] for a quick twirl. And dear sweet Merlin how had Harry even thought the boy was straight?!
“Dancing through life! Swaying and sweeping, and always keeping cool. Life is fraught-less when you’re thoughtless. Those who don’t try, never look foolish.”
The other Twin cut in, laughing uproariously. Cedric quickly chose another partner and the four had fun galloping around the quad. The song continued amid cheers, whistles, and catcalls.
“Dancing through life! Mindless and careless, make sure you’re where less trouble is rife. Woes are fleeting. Blows are glancing. When you’re dancing...through life!”
Cedric released his partner and plonked himself down nest to Draco, who has a slightly startled expression on his fine features.
“So,” He gasped jauntily at Draco, “what’s the most swankified event this year?”
“Uh, probably the Yule Ball, here at Hogwarts.” Draco all but simpered. As soon as the words left his mouth he looked terrified.
“Sounds perfect!” Cedric enthused. Then grabbed Draco and waltzed him about. “Lets go down to the Yule Ball together! We’ll meet there...whenever it is. We can dance till its lights, find the prettiest boy, give you a twirl...”
Cedric twirled Draco just then and looked over at Harry, waggling his eyebrows lavaciously.
“Right on down to the Ball at Hogwarts, c’mon, follow me! You’ll be happy to be there!”
And, rather predictably, the Hufflepuffs joined in.
“Dancing through life, down at the Yule Ball!”
“If only because dust is what we come to!”
“Nothing matters, but knowing nothing matters, its just life...”
“So keep dancing through!”
Draco and Cedric dropped onto a bench, hand in hand, with Draco gazing up at Cedric with an adoring expression in his eyes. Ron shuffled up nest to the blond and rapped hesitantly on Draco’s shoulder.
“Uhm Draco? I hope you’ll save at least one dance for me. I’ll be right there. Waiting. All night.”
He was as red as his hair and horrified at the rather incriminating words.
“Oh, that’s so kind.” Draco sneered. “But you know what would be even kinder?”
Draco pointed to Hermione, who was seated on a bench with her nose buried in a book, and began to sing.
“See that tragically beautiful girl? The one in the chair? It seems so unfair that we should go on a spree, and not she. Gee, I know someone would be my hero, if that someone were to go invite her.”
“Well...maybe I could invite her?”
“Oh, Weasel, really? You would do that for me?”
“I would do anything to get away from you Draco.” Ron replied fervently. Everyone fell silent, waiting to see what Draco would do. When he merely rolled his eyes, Ron all but ran over to Hermione, who looked up with definite interest.
Cedric then sidled back up to Draco.
“So...?” Draco asked, meaning heavy in his voice.
“So I’ll be picking you up around eight?” Cedric replied. Draco smiled craftily.
“After all...now that we’ve met one another...”
“Its clear we deserve each other!”
“You’re perfect.” Draco admitted grudgingly.
“You’re perfect.” Cedric agreed.
“So we’re perfect together, born to be forever, dancing through life!”
They danced out of the quad, to do only god knew what, and Harry saw Hermione pelting towards him. She sat in the seat Draco had just vacated.
“Oh Harry! Isn’t it wonderful?” She began to sing, a dreamy expression on her face. “Finally for this one night, I’m about to have a fun night, with this red-head boy that Draco found for me. And I only wish there were something I could do for him, to repay him. Harry, can’t you see? We deserve each other, and its Draco who helped it come true. We deserve each other, me and Ron. Harry, please, try to understand.”
Harry smiled reassuringly at her and squeezed her hand in a friendly and supportive way.
“I do.”
Just then Harry noticed Draco reentering the courtyard, he made his way over and Harry noticed the faint blush in his cheeks and that his perfect hair was mussed. Harry frowned, not quite sure how he was supposed to feel about this.
“Draco, Hermione and I were talking about you just now.”
“And I was just talking about you!” He said brightly, extending an expensive looking silk top hat to Harry. “I thought you might want to wear this hat to the party next month.”
Draco began to sing again.
“It’s really, uh, sharp don’t you think? You know black, its this year’s pink! And you deserve each other, this hat and you, you’re both so...smart. You deserve each other, so here, out of the goodness of my heart!”
Harry took the hat, then Draco’s hand, and they took off together as the invisible orchestra swelled. Ron fervently hoped they weren’t off to meet up with Cedric, not after how Malfoy looked when he had reappeared. He approached Hermione and nervously tapped her on the shoulder.
“Uh, ‘Mione?”
“Yes?”
“’Mione, I’ve got something to confess, uh, reason why. Well. Why I asked you to the Ball. Now I know it isn’t fair...”
“Oh Ron, I know why.”
“You do?”
“It’s because know one said yes, and you were desperate. Well, isn’t that right?”
“No! No, its because...because...because you are so beautiful!”
“Oh Ron! I think you’re wonderful! And we deserve each other, don’t you see this is our chance? We deserve each other. Don’t we Ron?”
“You know what? Lets dance!”
“What?!”
“Lets dance!”
They began to waltz [Hermione somewhat reluctantly] as Hufflepuff sang the final chorus.
“Dancing through life, down at the Yule Ball, if only because dust is what we come to! And the strange thing, is your life could end up changing, while you’re dancing...through!”
The music ended dramatically and, when the final notes had finally faded, everyone just stared at each other in total confusion for a moment. The whole of Hufflepuff house was the first to break the silence. They shrugged off the strange behavior and hurried along to their next classes.
Hermione turned to Ron. “What do you suppose...”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” He muttered brusquely, face red, and stalked away.
