Solitude

Chapter 1: Solitude
Written by: Beth

The new year at Hogwarts had only just begun a week ago, and already Hermione found herself in need of solitude. She sat outside underneath a large tree that was already loosing its leaves in the autumn chill. From here she could see the great lake to her right, the entrance to Hogwarts was almost completely behind her, and the path leading up from Hogsmeade was clearly visible to her left. It really was a great place to keep watch over her precious Hogwarts, but it was also a good place to be alone.

She sat under the tree disillusioned so that any passersby would not notice her. Her trademark backpack full of books was there, but unopened. She was lost in thought, merely observing the world around her.

It had been hard to decide whether or not to come back to Hogwarts this year. And in the end, she was the only member of the trio who had made it back. Harry and Ron were off in Circe only knows where, searching for Horcruxes and fighting evil wherever they found it. Sometimes she longed to be with them. If it hadn't been for McGonagall's firm request for her help, she would have been.

McGonagall had become Headmistress soon after Dumbledore’s funeral. She immediately began the arduous chore of renovating Hogwarts' wards, and she regularly flooed the new Order Headquarters to request their help in the endeavor. Halfway into July she had been satisfied that she could safely allow any students who wanted, to return to Hogwarts in September. This is where the real work began however, she could not allow the students to come back if they would not have a support system, she needed people, professors and prefects alike, that she could trust completely. This is where Hermione came in.

Hermione had been on the fast track for becoming Headgirl since her first year at Hogwarts. Besides her obvious abilities, which made her perfect for the job, she was also, as McGonagall felt, irrefutably trustworthy. She was the only girl in here year that McGonagall felt had the strength of character to do the job, and McGonagall went to Headquarters in person to request Hermione's help.

Hermione had been flattered for sure, to know that the elderly witch felt such a need for her presence at Hogwarts. But she also felt that she should stay with Harry and Ron to search for the Horcruxes.

McGonagall gave her time to think and talk with the boys. And in the mean time she worked tirelessly on obtaining a full teaching staff after what had happened with Dumbledore. Ultimately, she ended up filling every spot except hers: transfiguration. Though she would have liked to be about to teach full time and run the school, she really couldn’t. Again she decided to turn to Hermione...

When McGonagall asked her for another meeting at Headquarters to discuss what she had decided, Hermione had finally resolved to let her down and keep with Harry and Ron. Her resolve went by the wayside however, when the older woman presented her with the opportunity to not only be Headgirl but also instruct 1st through 3rd year transfiguration. She had said yes before she had even realized what she was doing. Her intellectual side had taken over before her heart could catch up. And once she had said yes, she just couldn't go back on her word.

The boys had been angry with her at first, but soon they acknowledged that their friend would probably be safer if she was at Hogwarts and agreed it was the best decision. Now, sitting under this tree with leaves in her hair, Hermione wasn't so sure.

After only a week she was feeling completely drained. Between her Headgirl duties, her teaching responsibilities, her classes, and her lack of a support system, exhaustion had set in. She spent whole hours that would normally be spent studying just sitting under this tree, staring off into space and doing her best to escape the chaos that surrounded her.

She didn't know what time it was, but she knew it had to be getting late. When she had come outside it was just dusk, and now the full moon was high in the sky. There was probably a slew of first and second year students waiting outside her door to talk, the idea of having to comfort them almost kept her seated where she was.

Taking a deep breath, Hermione stretched and prepared to get up. Something stopped her. Across the lawn on the path up from Hogsmead she saw something silvery reflecting the full moons light which seemed to be floating along. It took her a moment to realize that the silver color she was seeing was of hair, and that it attached to a head, which was attached to a body. That body had now turned off the path and was jogging towards her.

Hermione's breath hitched in her throat as she realized who the hair belonged to. None other than Draco Malfoy was jogging across the lawn towards her. She grabbed for her wand ready to fight, but then it occurred to her that there was no way for him to actually be jogging toward her, she was disillusioned.

Rising slowly from her seat she watched him as he jogged right past her and continued toward the lake. She rushed to keep pace with him. She watched as he reached the lake and did not stop. He walked into the water and began ripping at his clothes as though the thoroughly disgusted him.

It wasn't until that moment she realized. He was sobbing.
