Back to school
‘MUM!’ Hermione shrieked after reading the letter a third time to make sure she was not dreaming it.
‘What is it, honey? Good news?’ Mrs. Granger could not believe her daughter was smiling so widely again after the “Ron incident”. None of the Grangers liked to mention it. They thought it was embarrassing for Hermione and did not want to push her to talk about it too much.
Hermione told her parents she would accept McGonagall’s offer to go back to Hogwarts, and they were delighted. She only had two weeks to get everything set, but the first thing she needed to do was floo Ginny. “Shopping spree” was the first item on her list of things to do.

Ginny saw the flames in the Burrow turn bright green before Hermione’s head popped into view. Ron was not there any more, so they could speak freely without interruptions.
‘Oh, Hermione, I’m so happy for you!’ Ginny shouted. ‘And for myself, also.’
‘For you? What are you on about?’
‘I got a letter from Hogwarts just this morning, too. I’m going to apprentice with Madam Pomfrey for my Healing Certificate!’
‘That’s great! We can be together all year long,’ said Hermione. ‘I thought I’d be bored to death with no one my own age to talk with.’
‘Right, then. We can meet tomorrow at the Leaky Cauldron to buy tons of new robes,’ offered Ginny.

Diagon Alley was completely packed with parents and children buying all kinds of supplies for the approaching school year. The third most crowded shop was Flourish and Blotts, which was the only place you could buy Hogwarts books. The second was the Quidditch supply shop, with children and parents admiring the new Lightning 2006 broomstick in the shop window. But, not surprisingly, the most famous shop of all Diagon Alley was Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. Fred and George were getting richer by the day with their business. It didn’t matter that few people had trusted them in the beginning. Even their own family had doubts but thanks to Harry and the hordes of Hogwarts students, they were now swimming in gold Galleons.
Hermione and Ginny just had to stop by the shop; there was no way around it. Fred and George were so happy to see them that they gave the girls their new invention for free.
‘OK,’ said Ginny cautiously. ‘What’s it supposed to do? Tell us the whole truth, because I don’t want to transform into a canary in the middle of a date.’
‘It’s nothing dangerous…’ said Fred with a smirk.
‘…just something fun…’ continued George as if they were one person.
‘…for going out with boys.’
‘Yeah, you said that before, but what does it do?’ Hermione asked suspiciously. They knew what those two were like.
‘It will change your…’
‘…underwear. Even the plainest…’
‘…set you have will turn…’
‘…into something extremely sexy…’
‘…and lacy. No guy…’
‘…will be able to resist you.’
They both finished their presentation with huge grins. Hermione could not believe her ears. That sounded fantastic! She could use it in her new love life without Ron. She would be cool and sophisticated, not warm and safe like she used to feel with him. Beware, Hogwarts! But then, on second thought, who would see it? She was going to a school full of boys, yes, but they were just boys. What she needed was a man, and the teachers were all too old for her. Well, she decided to keep it anyway; she might meet someone younger in Hogsmeade.
The girls left to continue their shopping. They headed to Madam Malkin’s first to get new robes, as they had outgrown the ones from school, not to mention their need to look more professional as apprentices. Ginny tried on a sky blue robe that covered her entirely. Hermione just could not believe her eyes.
‘Are you really going to wear that?’
‘Well, it’s not my style,’ Ginny explained, ‘but I thought it would suit my new job. Madam Pomfrey won’t want me to show any cleavage.’
‘Of course, you don’t want students getting themselves injured just to see your…’ Hermione made a movement to indicate her breasts.
‘So, what are you getting?’
‘I thought I would dress neatly and professionally. Professor McGonagall won’t allow me to dress gaudily either, but I think I’ll get a few dresses to go out in on our nights off.’ Hermione winked at Ginny. ‘We could get lucky, you know.’
‘Oh, Merlin, I have never heard you talk like that!’ Ginny was shocked to see this new side of her friend; she was never one to talk about boys. ‘But I’m damn glad you woke up.’
‘Yeah, I need to get over your brother. How about you? What’s the deal with Harry?’
‘Well, he wanted to wait and all that, but I’m not all that convinced. We were expected to get married, but I don’t really want to turn out like my mum. I love Harry, and if we get back together, fine, but I told him it was better to leave it for now.’ Ginny rattled off in one breath. Hermione could not believe her ears.
‘But you seemed to be having a great relationship with him.’
‘It was fine, but it was just getting a bit too boring. You know how routine kills passion, so I think we’re better off this way.’
Hermione understood. Sometimes your feelings just change, and even if you did love that person, it was not the same. Hermione wanted to find someone to sweep her off her feet, but she wasn’t going to lower her standards for anyone.

Hermione and Ginny apparated to Hogsmeade on the appointed date. They couldn’t wait to walk all the way up to Hogwarts and refresh all the memories from their time in school. The castle was still breathtaking, and one could spend hours just looking at it. Ginny told Hermione stories of her time as Chaser on the Quidditch team, and they laughed about the silliest things.
It took a while to get to the Headmistress’ office, but they finally stood in front of the gargoyle and recited the password, “house unity”. The moving staircase began to move and took them up to the door. Before entering, Hermione made Ginny stop when she heard a familiar drawl coming from within.
‘Malfoy,’ Hermione whispered.
