Prologue - Hermione

Why did they make me marry him? He’s the most arrogant ass on the face of the earth. Why does it feel like our side lost when we won? Why does it feel like I lost? How could Harry have done this to me? Did he think he was handing me a marriage with all the wealth anyone could want? What was he thinking to hand me over to someone who hates my guts? Well, okay, I hate his too, but that’s not the point. Being treated like I have a fatal communicable disease every time I step into a room with that bastard is starting to get old. He hasn’t unbent since we were forced to the altar. Did he think I wanted him? Ugh. He certainly knows better now.

And having to think about carrying his babies? Little Malfoys who call me Mother. Could I have thought up anything nastier for a future than that? To add insult to injury, I can’t help but worry that they’ll all have the Malfoy coloring and my genes will get swamped. I understand the genes of that bastard always run true. But maybe that’s only with Purebloods. It would be such a cosmic joke if our children had my hair. Take that, lousy Lucius. He hates my hair, I know he does. He gets that nasty sneer on his face when he looks at me. That’s nearly the only enjoyment I get from my marriage. Pissing off my husband. He could be a very handsome man if he was someone else. I wish I were someone else.

Why couldn’t I have married Ron or one of his brothers? They’re Pureblood, but noooo, “Mr. Minister” Harry has to have me bearding the old lion in his den. I hope Harry is happy in his marriage to Ginny. The nerve of him taking Ginny for himself while giving me lousy Lucius. ‘I can’t have strife on the home front too, when I have to run the wizarding world’, Harry says. What a lame excuse. I could have at least had Draco, but he wasn’t the seat of the dark wizards’ power. ‘Cut off the head of the snake’, Harry says. Right, but he sacrificed me into the bargain. ‘I need someone I trust guarding our strongest enemy’, Harry says. Well trust me, Harry, I might go over to the dark side myself after this stunt you’ve pulled with the rest of my life.

My existence has been taken over with such stupid chores as cocktail parties, yachting, and formal dinners; how does one manage to waste one’s life on such trivial events? But it’s the air he breathes to Lucius. Social connections, bah. Why does he bother now? He still prefers Purebloods with money like himself, but they all have new spouses too, ones like me. We call ourselves the Unwanted Wives Club, which is a bit amusing when we sit around and compare our husbands’ inadequacies. Although I don’t have as much to talk about when it comes to the bedroom. Lucius hates me but he does his prescribed duty once a week as the edict requires. Some of the other husbands can’t even perform. I think those wives are the lucky ones. If the new order had just waited, maybe most of the Purebloods would have died out anyway. Trying to legislate genetics through matrimony was an interesting idea in theory. It certainly put paid to the Pureblood canker in the entire wizarding society, but in actuality, it isn’t working out too well. Why did they make me marry him?
