Chapter 2 Musings
Hermione put the necklace back under her robes and apparated back into her room at 12 Grimmauld Place. As she expected, nobody noticed that she had been gone; after all at had taken less than ten minutes. She wondered how long it would take for a response. At the moment, she was the only full-time resident of the home. Harry and Ron were both at Privet Drive until July 15, at which time everyone would be going to the Burrow for the wedding. After that, they would start the Horcrux Hunt in earnest.
Hermione was not with them because it was thought that one of them should stay at Headquarters to keep the other two up to date. She had volunteered herself, claiming they needed time for some male bonding. Plus, she wasn't sure how his Aunt and Uncle would take to having a teenage girl stay in their home. Really, she had to have privacy to go about contacting the Dark Lord and more importantly be able to slip away if he agreed to meet with her.
Earlier in the week when Harry had told them all about the locket horcrux, she knew immediately that it was the selfsame locket that she had taken from Grimmauld Place when they were cleaning before fifth year (with Sirius' permission, of course). She didn't know why, but her instincts had told her not to tell anyone that she was it's new owner, and she followed her instincts. They were now going to pay off for her. This thought caused a sly smile to weave its way across her face before her thoughts continued on.
It was obviously the locket. Really, though. She was just lucky that the two boys in her life were so daft as to not immediately realize that R.A.B. was Regulus Black. Come on, they had found a locket in the Black family house that not only matched the description but also couldn't be opened, and Lupin had told them that Regulus hadn't made it three days after defecting before being killed, so he obviously wasn't loyal. If they didn't even think of any of that, HIS BLOODY INITIALS MATCHED! She was surrounded by idiots. She had made the connection in about thirty seconds, and from there it was easy to just research for other names that matched and stay away from saying anything at all about the true person.
She went downstairs to see who was currently at the house, to find no one there. Looking at the clock, though, she saw that it was 11:30. She had better get lunch started. Usually two or three people showed up for the meal, and if Molly came she would be here forever. At least she shouldn't be compelled to cook. When she was, she always ended up staying later than Hermione would like. Besides, Hermione was a perfectly capable muggle-born. Her mother had taught her to cook the short time she was on holiday with them, and here she had magic.
An hour and a half later the house was once again empty. The only people to show up to check on her were Lupin and Tonks. This was perfectly fine with her, as they seemed to have other things on their minds and were gone with a relative swiftness. But she wasn't going to just sit here and twiddle her thumbs. Unknownst to her friends, who were still struggling with wordless magic, she had progressed to wandless magic, and she was going to use this time to practice. She was getting pretty damn good at it if she did say so herself.
Around four she was starting to get tired of practicing, but she was making steady progress and would continue to push herself. Her heart skipped a beat when she heard a noise at the kitched window, but then to her annoyance saw it was Hedwig. She let the owl in, and after taking the letter from her leg gave her some owl treats. She opened the scroll to find a short letter, written to look like a letter from any student writing to their friends over school holiday.
Hermy,
How is your holiday so far? I hope your family is doing well. Everything is quite boring here. My family is scared given the current situation, and I am finding it hard to get past recent events. I don't think I brought home the proper books to do the assigned homework over summer. Hope to talk to you soon.

So to decipher. How is your holiday = have you figured out anything about the horcruxes. Family doing well = has anyone in the Order died. Everything is boring probably means just what it says. Family scared with the current situation would make an intercepter think he means the Dark Lord rising, when he probably means that Ron is of age to do magic so the Dursley's must be shitless. Recent events would probably mean Dumbledore's death in any letter, but he most likely also means the fact that Malfoy killed him without a second thought. Assigned homework = they can't figure out who R.A.B. is yet. O'Doyle Rules is because they decided to sign letters with catchphrases from Muggle movies or songs. He probably should have used one for her name, but he'll figure it out when she did for his. So, to respond.
O'Doyle,
My family is tense, but we're good. I couldn't blame your family for being scared. As to recent events, things will get better. I am also having troubles with the homework.

Not five minutes after she sent Hedwig back with her note to Harry the one she had been waiting for all day arrived. When she took the scroll from the medium-sized barn owl, she saw that it had the same charm on it as the one she had sent. As soon as she took the letter, the owl disappeared out the window.
Miss Granger,
A meeting between myself and anyone who requests it is rarely granted, never mind when the person in question is a mudblood, like yourself. However, you have piqued my interest. At midnight tonight apparate to the living room at 148 Parsons Circle in Enfield. My servants will be waiting for you there to take you to me. If you do not present me with a reason to keep you alive, you will be dead before the next sunrise.

Well, now. That was straight and to the point. Absolutely no room for confusion, just the way she liked things. Now she just had six hours to kill, and she couldn't practice more wandless magic because she needed to be as strong as possible. She supposed that she really could work on actual homework. Despite the fact that there was no word as to whether Hogwarts would be open the next year, they had still been given assignment so they wouldn't be behind. It was going to be a long day, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
A/N~ O'Doyle Rules is from Billy Madison and Meow, while from many things, is specifically referencing the bet in Super Troopers.
