The Birth of Hope

A/N: Of course, I do not claim anything you recognize. They belong to JKR. I am only borrowing them to play with yet another plot idea.

To those of you that have read Beauty Found Within the Beast, this is the sequel. For those of you that haven’t, this story can probably stand alone... But it might make more sense to you if you read the other first. I know most everyone has probably given up on me ever getting this story written. My muse has finally chosen to unlock the writers block that has stunned my brain over the last several months, and I am really trying to get all my stories caught up to where they are supposed to be.

Roses from Avalon

Chapter 1 - The Birth of a Rose

Hermione screamed as another contraction hit her. Bearing down, she pushed as Ginny spoke softly from between her legs. “Almost there, Hermione. I can see her head. Give me just one more push, and we’ll be there.”

Hermione moaned, and began to cry in Lucius’ arms. “I can’t, Ginny! I don’t have any energy left.” She turned hurt eyes towards Lucius, “You would think that as wizards you men would come up with better ways for your witches to give birth!” She drew a deep breath, “I mean, in the muggle world, they at least have morphine!”

Lucius sighed and ran a damp cloth across Hermione’s brow. “I am sorry, my love. The medicines of the muggle world can do damage to the unborn child, and we couldn’t let any thing happen to little Ho-“

Hermione clamped down hard on the bottom lip of the man she loved. Her glare made his words faulter. “I love little Hope... Once the pain is over, I’ll hold my baby in my arms and cry tears of love.” She shook for a moment as another wave of pain hit her, then pinched Lucius’ lip that much harder, making him moan.

His worried gaze moved from Hermione, to Geneva Weasley, and he lisped in a small voice, “Pehrhaphss wee couhld do wifh a cahmingh drauhght? Ifth shhee’s reahhly ihn bahd paihnnn?” His eyes implored the witch even as he tried to gently pry Hermione’s hand from his lip.

Ginny shook her head and took up position between Hermione’s spread legs. “There is no time, Lucius. The baby comes.” Looking up to meet eyes with Hermione, she smiled, saying softly, “Now dear. On the count of three I want you to push with all your might.”

Hermione whimpered but seemed to draw strength from her friend’s steady gaze. Clasping Lucius’ hand, she nodded and took a deep breath...

Severus stood next to Lucius, smirking at the other man’s dumbfounded look of fatherly joy on his friends face. He really had no understanding of such things. Lucius was sitting next to Hermione, looking at the tiny bundle held within her arms and cooing at it like an imbecile.

That was what always baffled him the most. Babies were smaller versions of adults. They would grow up to be just like their parents in one way or another, but parents didn’t speak to their newborns in a common language. No... they insisted on cooing and gurgling at them like some stupid dog. His smirk became a scowl. No wonder the first year students were always morons when they first began attending Hogwarts.

He was so lost to his own thoughts that he gasped in shocked surprise when the glorious, tiny, squirming infant was thrust into his somewhat clumsy and ill prepared arms.

“Look, Severus!” Lucius said with the absurd smile still plastered on his face. “Isn’t she beautiful? She has her mother’s intelligence shining in her eyes.”

The other wizard stared down at the tiny baby with a raised eyebrow. “Hmmm... Yes.” he managed unemotionally. “I can just see it so clearly.”

Just then, the baby seemed to turn her eyes to stare up at the dark man holding her. Their eyes met and held for a brief instant before Hope opened her mouth in what started to be an almost enchanting smile, even for Severus. Then the most blood curdling sound came form those tiny little lips.

A scream so loud he could swear it shook the house overwhelmed him so deeply that Severus nearly dropped her in an attempt to thrust her back into her mothers arms. “She’s lovely, and she hates me. Like any other intelligent child.” He screeched as he moved swiftly from the room. “Congratulations, Hermione. She’ll be able to outscream any banshee!”

He missed the parents baffled gazes that followed after him as he swiftly moved out into the hall. Standing there in the corridor, he took a ragged breath and moved to wipe a sheen of perspiration from his brow. He was happy for his friend. But why Lucius had done something so crazy as thrust the child into his arms? That had been completely insane. What if he had dropped the little urchin? With the way that she tossed around, it was amazing that he had been able to keep a grip on her at all.

His thoughts were again interrupted. But this time, it was Miss Weasley that interrupted his brooding. “Are you well, Professor?”

He graced her with a humorless smirk. “I am fine, Miss Weasley. It appears that Little Miss Malfoy is the one that is unwell.” he reached up and absently rubbed his nose for a moment before glancing at Ginny. “I suppose it’s the nose that startled her so.”

Ginny chuckled softly and patted his arm. “More than likely, it was her need for sustenance that made her cry out. Babies are born into this world needing food fairly quickly. They have to replenish all the energy it took to make it out of their mum’s belly.”

Severus looked away from the beautiful red head that spoke so freely to him. Over the last eight months, they had spent much time together, researching the texts of Avalon. He had come to respect the witch not only for her sharp intellect, but for her many talents and her wisdom and love for life. He found himself wanting to share things with her that he had never desired to share with another living being.

Ginny watched him curiously for a moment before she spoke. “Would you grant me a boon?”

His eyebrow raised as he tilted his head to look at her. “What, pray tell, do you need of me?” he asked in a soft voice that he feared would give away his emotions to her.

Smiling, Ginny gestured towards the stairs. “Would you tell Harry and Ron that Hermione is ready for them to come meet the baby? They’re waiting in the library.”

Severus felt his heart plummet as he stood to his full height, and nodded slowly. “Of course.”
Turning he made his way from the corridor, cursing himself as he went for being a fool. He knew better than to think that Ginevra Weasley would ever see him as more than the professor of her youth, and the associate that worked with her to translate ancient the ancient texts of Avalon.

When he reached the library, he relayed the message. As the two young men made their way swiftly up the stairs, Severus Snape; the greasy git, gathered his things and with a pinch of floo powder, left the cheerful home, and stepped into his own, gloomy dungeons of Hogwarts.
