Chapter 2
Welcome back.
Again, I obviously don’t own a single character portrayed here, but the situations and wording are completely mine. Chapter 2 coming your way.

The next morning, Hermione Granger slid into the chair before her desk at exactly 8:45 AM, as she had done every morning since procuring the Director position in the Office of Muggle Studies with the Ministry of Magic. It wasn’t her first choice position, but she was excellent at her job and that satisfied her until a more coveted position could open up.
“Well, well, well, Granger.” A smooth voice slid towards her from the open door of her office. “On time as always. I’m surprised you’re not home trying to figure out a loophole to all of this.” Draco Malfoy leaned against the doorjamb, sipping a hot drink, most likely coffee, from an ebony mug. Hermione put her purse into the bottom drawer of her desk, placed her gloves on top of it and closed the drawer before answering.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She lifted the stack of papers from her IN box and began to shuffle through them. Folder 1. Not as important as Folder 2. Folder 2 goes in front. Folder 3. More important that 1 but not as important as 2. Middle. Hermione carefully ordered her work as she did every morning, to assure that the most important issues were taken care of, first. It had been several minutes and there’d been no words from the doorway, so Hermione vainly hoped that Malfoy had gone. She was disappointed a minute later, when:
“You honestly don’t know, do you?” There was a cruel laugh following this, and she could imagine his smirk as he informed her, “The marriage law was passed; 11 to 5 last night. It’s been in all the papers.”
“Marriage law…?” Hermione intoned, blankly. Ah, yes. The marriage law. The ministry’s idea of saving the wizarding population. Force purebloods to marry halfbloods or ‘mudbloods’ (as Draco would call them, if the rules of the workplace didn’t specifically forbid muggle harassment) and produce children. As of last night, the law was passed and purebloods had 6 months to offer for another witch or wizard, otherwise one would be chosen for them with magical compatibility. Luckily, there were fewer purebloods than any other type of witch or wizard, so there were plenty of muggleborns to go around. Anyone who wasn’t chosen by a pureblood wasn’t required by the law to marry. Why hadn’t she known that the vote was last night…? Oh… wait, she had. But her Parents were Dead. That’s why she hadn’t heard the news.
“Yes, the marriage law. You’ve advocated against it for months, how could you possibly forget?” Malfoy’s words practically spit at her and she raised the blank eyes she’d carried since last night to his. Malfoy was somewhat disturbed by the lack of spark that normally resided there.
“My parents were killed, last night. I was dealing with that, not the ministry’s new law.” The words were spoken matter of factly and without the slightest hint of distress, Malfoy noted.
“Well, then I suppose you’ll be pleased to know that I intend to offer for you.” There. That ought to snap her out of it.
But Hermione said nothing. She turned her eyes to the stack of papers on her desk and began working, methodically.
“Indeed, that’s an excellent idea. Once you belong to me, I can do whatever I like with you. You’d be mine to command, every day. And every night.” Again, there was no reply, so Draco laughed, merrily, and went about his way.
