Chapter 2
“Sit down, Remus.” He said, as he gestured to two armchairs by the fireplace. “Explain what the problem is.” Albus watched the very distressed Lupin, his eyes kind and amused.
Remus fell into the chair and sat rigidly in it, wringing his hands. “I’m in heat, Albus!” He whispered, horrified.
“Sh… It can’t be that bad.”
“Oh yes it can!” Remus was up and pacing around the room again, Albus watching him with dark worried eyes. “How could I forget?”
“Remus, please sit down and have a lemon drop and a cup of tea.” A cup, teapot and a bowl of sweets materialized in front of him and Albus took a small, yellow coloured sweet and popped it in his mouth, “I’m not sure I see what the problem is.” He said after a moment of sucking on it.
Of course Dumbledore understood what Remus was talking about. He’d heard and witnessed a few werewolves in heat and they were often very sexually orientated, talking with innuendoes with sly winks and looks. It was an amusing sight, but there was nothing to worry about here, he was sure of it. Albus was just thankful that he didn’t have any young witches working for him and that it was the holidays.
Lupin sighed, calming himself before he sat down again, viciously taking a bite of the many sweets Dumbledore had in the large bowl. Albus spoke softly, “There is no problem. All of us are a lot older than you, besides Severus, but he is male.”
“But he’s the problem.” Remus insisted. He didn’t particularly find the idea of explaining his affection for Snape very inviting. He sighed when Albus waited for him to elaborate, a fake innocent, curious look on his face. “I… I have feelings for Severus Snape.” He admitted, noticing that the twinkle had reappeared in the headmaster’s eyes. His body had begun to tingle again talking about the Potions Master.
The wizard nodded, “Yes… I had a tickling feeling that you did.” Remus didn’t find the news very surprising, it was Dumbledore after all. “Hm… Yes… What do you think we should do?” He ran his fingers through his silvery beard, peering at Lupin from behind his spectacles.
“I … Think it would be best if I stayed in my rooms for the next two weeks, locked in my rooms.” He said hesitantly, hiding his almost ashamed look.

Sirius quickly dressed in jeans and a black t-shirt, before he chucked on a navy blue jacket. He’d flooed Pastra, canceling the outing they’d planned for that day, and told her to not expect him to be around for the next few weeks.
Dumbledore said he’d had an important job for him and he’d readily agreed to floo to Hogwarts. He owed Albus his life, after he’d cleared his name and saved him from Azkaban.
He was surprised to find Remus seated by the fire, looking worried and ... He cringed away from the feeling of self loathing emanating off Lupin.
“You wanted me to do a job for you?” He asked Albus, who’d moved back to his seat behind his desk. He was flitting through a pile of letters.
He nodded, his eyes flickering over to Remus, “Yes Sirius. And I would prefer if you would not interrupt. Remus is currently going through a… Difficult time.” Sirus glanced back at Remus, who was staring at the floor, “It will wear off in a week or two, but until then I need you to make sure he doesn’t do anything he may... Regret.” He said his last word with a hint of amusement in his voice.
“Of course I will!” He said a serious look on his face. He clapped a hand over Remus’ shoulder, “So… What’s troubling you?” He was surprised when his friend shook off his hand.
“I would prefer it if you wouldn’t touch me, Sirius.” Remus saw the look Albus was sending him and stood, motioning for Sirius to follow him and waving goodbye to the headmaster who waved and nodded back at them.
Sirius walked a few strides behind Remus, surprised when the man opened up a large broom cupboard and motion him inside. There was about a foot worth of space between them.
“Is there any reason as to why we’re in here?” He asked, staring around at the darkness, “I can’t see a thing! Lumos!”
“Be quiet! He might hear us.” Remus whispered back, his eyes trained on Sirius’.
Sirius frowned, “Who?”
“Severus!”
“Why? Is he giving you a hard time? Do you want me to hex him? I will, Merlin knows he diser-” He was cut off by the glare Remus sent him.
“No. I would not like you to hex him and he doesn’t deserve it. He’s on our side!”
It was silent for a few moments before Remus opened the door again. Sirius followed as he was directed into a classroom. Remus locked the door and whispered a silencing charm around them.
There was silence between them again.
Sirius spoke first, “So… What’s with you?”
“Hm?”
“Why am I protecting you?”
Remus chuckled despite himself, “It’s more like you’re protecting Severus.”
“What?!” It was no secret that Sirius hated Snape’s guts, and his expression of pure horror and disgust reflected that. “I do not,” He corrected himself, “Will not protect Snivelly.”
“Don’t call him that.” Remus could feel the wolf in him grow protective as he growled that. “His name’s Severus.”
“Yeah, whatever, now what’s up with you?”
They were sitting on some desks staring up and through the tall windows. Remus smiled slightly as he noticed a crow nesting in one of the holes in the roof. It must have gone right through to the outside.
Remus swung his leg aimlessly as he explained, staring ahead of him. Sirius was quiet for the most part, but he’d nod, gasp or swear depending on what Lupin said. Sirius’ shocked expression making him feel uneasy as his explanation came to an end.
“But wouldn’t that mean that you’d want me?”
“No! No. The age of the person may be an important factor, but it depends on the werewolf’s love. I love Severus. That is why I want him.”
Sirus made a face of disgust and cringe, “It’s wrong for anybody to say that about Snape, and you saying it proves my point.” He cringed, twirling his wand aimlessly in his hand, “So… You’ll suffer through two weeks of wanting to jump him and snog him to death when ever you see him?”
Remus nodded, “That’s about it.” He glanced up at Sirius, “I should start to be a problem in a day or two, though I can feel everything strongly now.”
“Fuck.”
Sirus, Remus noted sadly, didn’t seem upset about the strong sexual urges, the bouts of energy and frustration or the fact that he may be more than a little rude. No. He seemed much more upset about his feelings being directed at Severus, or as he’d found himself correcting every few seconds, Snivellus. He hadn’t liked or used that name in school and he wasn’t going to start now.
He sighed, well no wonder why Sirius felt so strongly. Severus was his long time enemy, his lesser half, the ‘greasy git’. He felt a wave of anger wash over him, and thought it was time to stop thinking about it.
After a few more minutes Sirius spoke again, as if he’d heard Lupin’s thought, “I’ll verse you in a game of chess?”
“Sure.”

Three days later Severus was pacing his potion’s lab, his knee aching, feeling rather insulted.
He supposed he should have been glad. He supposed he should have been thankful, after all… It was what he’d wanted after all.
Lupin, it seemed, was avoiding him and seemingly ignoring his existence completely.
And just when he’d wanted to speak to the werewolf about his transformation too! He’d found something that might have been the cause of Lupin’s new found energy, but couldn’t find out if he was right unless he talked to Lupin! And like hell he was going to start a conversation with him!
And now Black was around again and absolutely everywhere Lupin was. Even if he did want to talk to Lupin, he wouldn’t be able to find the werewolf alone so he could do so.
Wasn’t it enough that Severus had to live with the thought of Black being alive, without having to stay in the same building as him? Why had he told the headmaster about the veil and its magical properties? He had to have been out of his mind that day.
He grabbed his cane – he’d decided to only use it when his leg became unbearable to walk on – and practically hobbled to the staffroom, looking forward to his second cup of coffee. It was the only thing that kept him sane, he’d reasoned, whenever Dumbledore asked.
It was a quiet walk to the room, all his colleagues either away for the holidays or staying in their own parts of the castle. He was surprised when he found Lupin, all by his lonesome, in the staff room gulping down a cup of tea.
He felt uneasy as Lupin’s eyes fell on him almost as soon as he’d stepped into the room. He set his cane up against the counter, carefully taking his long black mug out of the over head cupboard. He could feel Lupin’s eyes on his back, but he ignored them, pouring the hot water into the mug.
He threw the spoon into the sink, carefully turning with his empty hand to grab his cane. He missed it and stumbled forward, hissing when he felt the scalding liquid in his mug slosh out and onto his hand.
Surprisingly he didn’t find himself on the floor, completely humiliated in front of Lupin, instead he found a strong arm wrapped around his waist almost protectively. He looked up almost hesitantly, turning slightly to find Lupin’s face directly in front of his own, his body behind his.
Severus stilled in fright at the almost hungry look in Lupin’s eyes, they seemed darker than they usually were. “Careful there Severus, don’t want to damage that knee of yours anymore than it is.” His voice was silky, deep, unlike his usual one. Severus tried to take a step forward, to remove himself from Lupin’s grasp. It resulted with him being pulled right up against Lupin, his back flush against the werewolf’s chest.
“I thank you for helping me Lupin, now let go.” He sneered, incredibly confused with the usually well mannered, quiet man. He could feel Lupin’s breath on his neck, warming the skin there.
“You can let me go now Lupin.” He said again, feeling Remus’ other hand sliding up his chest almost lovingly. He gasped and froze when he felt the werewolf tug and undo the top button on his vest, quickly moving to the second, then third one. “Lupin, what are you doing?”
“Remus!” It was Black. He strode in, wand out, “Hurry up, the Headmaster wants to speak to us.”
Lupin let go of Severus slowly, almost hesitantly and moved away, quickly handing him his cane, his head down. Severus saw Black cast a disgruntled look in his direction as he almost stomped out behind Lupin.
Severus was frozen still, blinking like an owl after Lupin and Black. Had Lupin just… What had… Why? He quickly did up the buttons, his coffee forgotten as he limped out of the room and to Dumbledore’s office, greeting the gargoyle almost neutrally.
He cursed when his knee became near unbearable. But he didn’t stop or take a break: it was the price he paid for getting information.
