A big thanks to my beta, Cassandra!!!

Chapter 2

“Hermione!” boomed Harry, “We have been looking all over for you!”

“Hi Harry,” said Hermione as she closed the book she had been reading.

“Are you okay? We missed you at dinner,” said Harry.

“I’m fine Harry. I’ve just been busy reading,” she said putting the book down.

Harry read the title out loud. “10,000 of the Rarest Potion Ingredients. Hermione, you are amazing. You get kicked out of Double Potions class, yet you skip dinner to read all about potions,” said Harry.

“You know me,” she said quickly, “I am just trying to make up for what I missed in class. Oh gosh, look at the time! I have to be in the dungeons in three minutes!” Harry helped her putting her things away and she sprinted out the door.

Arriving at Snape’s door, she cautiously knocked, knowing that she was late, but there was no answer. She knocked again and still, there was no answer. Knowing that she would be in more trouble if she left, she decided to try the door. Her stomach turned at the thought of having to face Snape after what she had said. Surprisingly it was unlocked. She looked around, trying to find Professor Snape, but he was nowhere. Spotting a stack of books on the potions counter, she took a look and found a note addressed to her.

Miss Granger,
You will complete today’s assignment and then you will leave.
Professor Snape

Expecting the worse, she was quite relieved that she only had to do her assignment. She quickly completed it and left. While being in the dungeons, the tension of expecting Snape to show up at any minute was nerve racking, so when she finally left she felt like she could breath again. Still exhausted from the night before, Hermione went straight to bed and fell asleep immediately.

The rest of the week, Hermione served her detention without Snape being present. He left notes, explaining what each of her tasks were. On some nights, she had to inventory the supply closet and on others she had to clean. It was only on the first night that she had been allowed to do her homework. During class, Hermione ignored Snape and Snape ignored her. Their student - teacher relationship was more than a hate - hate relationship, it was a loathe - detest - despise - spit on each other relationship.

Several weeks had past as things appeared to calm down between the two, but they still did not acknowledge each other. In class, Hermione did not raise her hand and Snape did not call on her. While he took the roll, he skipped over her name. When she whispered to Neville to help him on a potion, he ignored her. She was getting tired of not existing in his world, which would normally be a good thing, but she, of all people was very serious about getting an education and she was not about to let some Greasy Git stop her. It was time to get his attention again.

The Gryffindors and Slytherins filed into Double Potions, each finding their regular seats. Hermione was sitting between Harry and Neville and she was smiling for the first time while being in Snape’s class.

“Be ready,” whispered Harry to Ron, who sat on his other side, “Hermione’s grin looks evil today.” Ron nodded, acknowledging his warning.

Snape stormed into the classroom and took the roll. When he came to Hermione’s name he skipped it, but she yelled, “HERMIONE!” in a deep voice trying to imitate Snape.

“Here!” she responded in her normal voice. There were a few snickers, but Snape still ignored her.

As class proceeded, she listened to his lecture, taking notes as always, but when he asked for questions, she raised her hand. Ignoring her, she blurted out, “Severus, what is your opinion on unicorn blood being used to keep the former Death Lord alive?”

The class gasped but Snape continued with he lecture, still ignoring her. It was time for the class began to brew the potion that he had been talking about.

“Hermione,” whispered Harry, “What are you doing?”

“Getting his attention,” she whispered back, “I am going make him acknowledge my presence.”

“She’s going to get herself expelled!” whispered Ron and Neville nodded in agreement.

“Make sure you have the following ingredients,” Snape announced, “Fluxweed - ”

“Delicious!” cried Hermione as Ron’s eyes widened.

Ignoring her, Snape continued, “Asphodel - ”

“Scrumptious!” Hermione cried again, licking her lips.

“Oh gods,” moaned Harry.

“Crushed beetles - ”

“Mmm, crunchy!”

“It was nice knowing you Hermione,” said Ron while the rest of the class was snickering.

“Bubotubers pus- ”

“Mouth water!” The class gagged at this comment.

Snape continued listing all the ingredients with Hermione describing how wonderfully delicious they each of them were. Harry, Ron, and most of the class cringed as they listened, knowing that she was going to get into so much trouble, but shockingly, Snape just ignored her.

All of the students began to brew their potions with the list of ingredients he gave them, except for Hermione who was brewing her own potion.

Waiting until Snape had walked up behind her, she added her final ingredient, causing her potion to explode while remaining in her cauldron.

‘Right on cue,’ she thought as the entire table collapsed. She had purposely brewed a density potion that caused her potion to weigh ten thousand times more than what it should. As her potion brought down the entire table, the cauldrons on either side of hers slid into the middle, following her cauldron down to the floor.

The entire class came to see the commotion, but was dumbfounded when they saw the five-foot crater her cauldron made in the stone floor.

“Damn, Granger!” said a very impressed Draco, “If we were on the top floor of the North tower, I bet your cauldron would have gone through every floor!” The class openly agreed, but quickly retreated when Professor Snape glared at all of them.

Hermione just smiled at Snape as she asked, “Does that deserve detention?”

“Eight o’clock, my dungeons,” was all he hissed before walking away.

“Finally,” she murmured, glad that he had finally acknowledged her presence. Waving her wand, she quickly cleaned up the mess for the other students, but she was not powerful enough to clean up her ten thousand pound cauldron as it continued to lie in the middle of the floor.

“Are you crazy?” Harry asked Hermione.

“SILENCE!” growled Snape as the class finished their potions.

That night, Hermione arrived for detention on time and entered the potions lab without knocking, because knewknew Snape would not acknowledge her. As expected, a set of instructions were setting on the work counter, waiting for her, but what was not expected was Snape who was in the room brewing a potion.

He continued to work without looking at Hermione. As far as he was concerned, she did not exist, but he was still responsible for her education, so he knew that she needed to brew today’s potion correctly.

Hermione set up her things directly next to him on the work counter, daring him to tell her to move. There were two reasons why she set up next to him. One, she wanted to annoy him and two, she was curious to learn more about the potion he had been brewing. Every free minute she had between classes, studying, and her Head Girl duties, she was researching the notes she had taken from him. She had found the ingredients fascinating along with the procedure he was using to brew them, but she still did not know exactly what it was for, other than trying to counter act the effects of the Cruciatus curse. She had a feeling that there was something more critical because he had spent a lot of time on the potion. She watched his every move as she slowly brewed her potion.

She quietly hummed as she cut up her ingredients. As she added them to the potion, she began to sing:

“This is the song that never ends;
Yes it goes on and on my friends.
Some people, started singing it,
Not knowing what it was
And they’ll continue singing it
Forever just because

This is the song that never ends;
Yes it goes on and on my friends.
Some people, started singing it,
Not knowing what it was
And they’ll continue singing it
Forever just because ...”

She went on and on and on until, “SILENCE!!!” he yelled.

When she was finished, she looked at the next task she had to complete, cleaning the floor without magic. She rolled her eyes and went to fill the bucket up with water. Again, the water was only warm, but she quickly charmed it so that is was hot and cleaned the floor. She did not leave the dungeons until midnight.

A month had past and Hermione continued to annoy Snape as Ron and Harry decided not to continue their original plan of an ‘eye for an eye’ because it was worse to be a part of a dangerous game.

The day she transfigured all of Snape’s quills into giant purple peacock feathers and asked him repeatedly why he saved Harry Potter from falling off his broomstick, he still ignored her.

While he glided around the room, inspecting everybody’s potion except Hermione’s, she called out, “Precious-Little-Sevvie-kins, you did not look at my potion!”

This earned her another detention.

Hermione had become obsessed with the potion Snape was still trying to brew. Each time she had detention, she took a quick peek at his potion and saw it had been brewed into a different texture and color. She had even made a shift lab in her Head Girl’s room so that she too, could try and brew the potion. All she ever came up with was brown gunk, so she named it, Brown Gunk In A Bottle.

That night in detention, she was busy restocking his shelves as Snape stood in front of his cauldron, trying to brew the same potion. She was cautiously placing the glass vials of potion on the shelf when she noticed out of the corner of her eye, Snape collapsing on the ground. Quickly she put down the vial in her hand and ran over to him. He was on his knees, grabbing his left arm that was violently trembling.

“Professor!” she cried. “What is wrong?” she asked, fearing it was the Dark mark, but he did not answer. At first she thought it was because he was still ignoring her, but she quickly realized that he was in an incredible amount of pain and was unable to answer her. She knelt down beside him, trying to comfort him, but it was no use.

‘Don’t panic!’ she thought as she jumped to her feet and ran to the fireplace. Searching frantically, she found some floo powder in a canister on the mantle, threw it into the fireplace and yelled, “Dumbledore’s Office!” She stepped into the green flames and walked out into Dumbledore’s office.

“Professor! Professor!” she half yelled and half cried, “I need you!”

He came walking quickly out of his library, “What’s wrong Miss Granger?”

“Professor Snape, he is - he is - ,” she did not know how to describe it, “He needs help!”

Dumbledore grabbed a handful of floo powder and returned to the dungeons with Hermione behind him. He found Snape, on the floor, unconscious. Using his wand and the Mobilicorpus charm, he moved him into his private rooms and onto the bed. Hermione was too distraught to realize that she was in Snape’s private rooms while she sat down next to him on the bed. She wanted to help, but did not know what to do.

“Miss Granger, I need you to go to the infirmary and tell Madame Pomfrey that Professor Snape needs her,” said Albus in a very serious tone. Hermione nodded and left immediately.

Returning in an instant with Madame Pomfrey, Hermione followed her into Snape’s room, but Dumbledore blocked the doorway.

“Miss Granger,” he said, “I am grateful for your help, but I must ask you to leave now.”

As much as Hermione wanted to protest, she nodded in agreement and turned to leave.

“Miss Granger,” Dumbledore spoke again, “As Head Girl, I expect complete confidentiality about tonight’s activity,” he eyed her over his half-moon glasses.

“Yes sir,” she said before he closed the door to Snape’s room.

She was standing in the middle of his potion lab, trying to figure out what had just occurred to Snape. He had always been mean and cruel, but he was also a war hero who spent many years being a spy for the Order of Phoenix. His intelligence and strength dominated most wizards, yet he was unconscious in his bed. She had to help him, but how? Smiling, she realized that his notes were still lying next to his cauldron. Looking around for anyone who might be lurking, she quickly examined them, realizing that his entire journal of notes were there. She grabbed some parchment from his desk and copied the notes onto it. Then she quickly left for her room. Whatever was wrong with Professor Snape, she knew she was holding the answer in her hands.
