Chapter two: The alternative

Startled, Hermione looked up to see Professor Dumbledore standing in
the doorway, a grim look on his face.

“Excuse me professor, but did you just say that I can get out of this?” asked Hermione,
clearly confused.

“Of course, my dear! We would never let you put yourself in such danger.” Answered
Dumbledore.

“But how,” asked Hermione, still confused. “How? I looked over the law just this morning;
there really is no way to get out of it. “

“AA, but Hermione, you haven’t been looking in the right place. Think about it, this law was
passed so that the growing muggleborn population would loose some power. No doubt Lucius
himself backed this law. Now all of the purebloods just want to keep the Muggleborn’s
‘under check’ so to speak. That is why we cannot have anyone else petition for you, or the
Weasley’s would have done it by now.” Explained Albus.

“I don’t understand, why cant the Weasley’s petition for me?”

“Think you little chit!” came Snape’s snarky answer. If any respectable pureblood family,
or at least one without a death eater past petitioned and you took them up on their offer,
they would be dead before you can blink an eye. I would petition for you myself, but I am
afraid the Dark Lord doesn’t trust me too much now, and both of us would be dead should I do that.”

Hermione looked at him for a second, bewildered that he would have ever though of petitioning for
her, but realized living with him might not be much better than with the Malfoy’s. Though he was a spy,
Snape was still definitely mean and had a dark side to him. To him, getting her as a slave would
probably look like the perfect opportunity to bed him.

Dumbledore continued where Snape left off. “Therefore, the Order of Phoenix and I have given this
much thought. We have decided that the best way to keep you out of harms way will be to disguise
someone else as you, and send them to the Malfoy’s instead.” He said, looking towards Snape.

“But sir,” continued Hermione, “who would ever agree to take on a disguise, and then go
to the Malfoy’s as a slave?”

Looking at the two wizards standing in the room, comprehension finally hit her.
"Oh, no! I could never…”

Dumbledore held up a hand silencing Hermione. “Do not worry about Professor Snape. He would
be the best candidate for this. As he said before, the Dark Lord seems to be loosing faith in Severus,
and has stopped giving him much useful information. If he was to be stationed at the Malfoy’s’ house,
he would be able to pick up loads of information, while keeping you away from harm.”

Hermione opened her mouth, probably to argue some more, when Snape spoke up again,
“Don’t you ever shut up! Stop arguing. It will just be futile. The adults have made up their mind.”

Dumbledore shot Severus a warning glare, probably warning him to tone his snarkiness down a bit.

“Ok professor. I really do not want to go live with the Malfoy’s, but I have one more question.
How are we going to change professor Snape’ s appearance to look like me. I am guessing the
Polyjuice Potion will be too much of a problem, considering it must be drunk every hour.”

The twinkle back in his eyes, Dumbledore answered, “That is what you will need to research in the next 24 hours.”

With that said, the Potions Master left the room with his trademark billowing robes, while
Hermione stood rooted to the spot. Happy that she had such a challenge ahead of her, but
nervous that so many things could still go wrong in their plan, at the cost of many lives.
