Chapter 1: When Words Fail

He gazed out over the lake, his hair blowing in the wind that told him the secrets and goings-on in the Forbidden Forest.

He was back, he had traveled the world and ended up back where it all started with the trouble he was avoiding bringing the fight where it would hit him hardest, how beautifully ironic.

They were giving him home field advantage but it was nothing against the time they had to prepare.
He sighed as he closed his eyes and just continued to listen the wind's calm voice. She and her sisters had been his constant company in his travels.

He looked back out over the lake, the water laughing at his misfortune, as she was prone to do in her cynicism. How was he possibly going to do this? Humans and peers had never been his forte; Albus had known that, played off it quite masterfully in fact.

He took off his sunglasses and rubbed his eyes, the earth soothing him as best she could with such minimal contact.

He couldn't believe they had done this, though he shouldn't have been surprised, not really. He just wished he didn't have to face the others. He looked back towards the castle and walked back towards it, his knee-high black dragon-hide boots gave silent footsteps as he walked back towards the place he still called home.

"That's enough for today everyone!" he shouted over the voices of his students.

He opened the door of his classroom but he smirked, the little buggers would pay for today's little stunt.

"Oh and class!" he had to bite back his chuckle. "Don't forget that you are to turn in a two foot essay on the history of duel etiquette!"

The second years groaned before nodding, scrambling to get out of his class, although, they were less excited to get out than before.

He shook his head as he watched the last student leave, before climbing the stairs to his office, spelling the door shut behind him.

He flopped into his seat and rubbed his eyes, tired blue eyes gazed at a picture of himself waving and smiling, the boy beside him just as happy and carefree. He snorted, a small smile on his lips as he picked up the picture.

He set it down with a shaking hand before hurriedly getting up and walking over to a cabinet. He opened it and pulled out a bottle of firewhiskey. He gazed at it before popping it open and taking a long swig of it, it burned all the way down.

He glanced over his shoulder at the picture and then finished the bottle, his entire body shaking at the intensity of the drink. He took a deep breath before throwing it away and leaving his office and awaited for another class to begin.

The small first years scrambled in, their little Gryffindor and Slytherin badges proudly showing on their robes. He smiled at them.

"Now," he started without delay, "who remembered to do that 10 inch essay on trolls?"

He heard the groans and his smile broadened.

Severus resisted the urge to rub his temple. Every year the quality of his students declined, to think Potter and Longbottom had been better than these brats! He sighed inwardly as another botched potion was put onto his desk, his apprentice wisely away for the first and second year classes.

When the last twit placed his potion on his desk, he waved a dismissive hand and watched them scramble to get out. He looked up and saw his apprentice leaning against the doorframe, his trademark smirk on his lips as cold gray-blue eyes watched them leave.

The blonde chuckled as the last one left and Severus sagged in his seat, rubbing his eyes.

"I'm getting too old for this Draco…"

"Pish, you're only 44, that headmaster is still here is he not?" Draco countered as he sauntered into the room and stood behind the chair, his lithe hands working out the knots in Severus' weary shoulders.

"How'd it go?"

"I have a clean bill of health, no thanks to Granger…"

"Weasley now, if you'll recall."

"You mean if she'll remind."

"Hmm, lower Draco," he purred. "I assume Poppy was there as well?"

"To see that her own little apprentice didn't mess up too badly," Draco answered as he started to knead Snape's middle.

"Tell me the day is over."

"That would be lying to you Sev," Draco whispered as he placed a kiss to Snape's temple.

"That's never stopped you."

"Hmm yes, but lying to you in this will only ease your suffering."

"And we can't have that can we?"

Draco chuckled.

"Not at all, where would the fun be?"

"Did you visit Weasley?"

"Which one Severus, we have two here now."

"The red head."

"Ah yes, Ronald is doing better, his arm was bothering him again but the potion took care of it."

"It’s a wonder that magic can only do so much for something like that."

"Yes, well, enough wondering about Weasley," Draco kissed the other temple. "It's lunch now and I know you didn't eat breakfast this morning."

Severus groaned.

"You truly are cruel to make me get up."

"Now you're just being lazy, I pray this is only because you haven't had breakfast and this trait won't be revealing itself in our quarters," Draco chuckled.

Severus pushed himself out of his chair, satisfying pops and cracks responding in kind and Draco cringed.

"You'll be grading the papers tonight," Severus stated as he offered his arm.

Draco rolled his arms.

"Dare I ask?"

"Three foot essay on lily root."

"You evil bastard," Draco hissed as he took Snape's arm.

"It’s a gift…"

She smiled kindly at the first year, patting her on the head.

"It's quite alright; you were very smart to come here. Now you're to ease up on the reading for a couple of days, no more than one book a day understood?"

The Ravenclaw pouted but nodded.

"Good girl, can't have you fainting because you wanted to finish all twenty books in one day and forgot to eat now can we?"

The girl's eyes widen.

"You know about them?" she asked with giddiness.

She laughed.

"I daresay I own all of them!" she got an idea and leaned in close as if it were a secret. "I'll tell you what," she whispered, having the girl's apt attention, "if you'd like you can come to my office and we'll discuss each one after you finish reading it hmm?"

The little Ravenclaw clapped her hands together.

"Oh that's wonderful!"

She laughed as she stood back up, she handed the little brunette a potion.

"Drink that all up and then head off to lunch, and remember what I said, only one book a day!" she called after the girl as she had finished the potion and was running out the doors.

"Very nicely handled Mrs. Weasley," she heard from behind her.

She was fixing the bed sheets and smiled.

"Thank you Madam Pomfrey."

"I recall a certain Gryffindor who had come in her first year for the very same reason…" Poppy replied with a smile.

She laughed as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"That almost seems eons ago."

"It is best to take your own advice and go to lunch Hermione."

"I'll get down to the Great Hall as soon as I finish the reports."

She didn't even have to see Poppy's expression or her hands on her hips before she felt herself spun around to face the doors.

"Now young lady or I will restrict you again to five reports a day…"

Hermione laughed as she started to jog out the door.

"I'm going I'm going!"

"And say hello to your husband for me dear!" she heard Poppy call after her as she closed the door behind her.

Hermione chuckled and headed over towards Ron classroom, the class would be out soon enough as it was.

She was walking through the courtyard and glanced up when she thought she had seen a white owl soar across the sky. She gasped and shook her head, the owl's visage was gone.

Hermione quickened her pace towards Ron's class, she couldn't believe she was still seeing ghost.
