~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since Melody was so often in the company of the twins, it was expected that she would take part in the common room games. Sometimes it was a disorganized game of chase, sometimes a rousing game of Exploding Snap which never failed to make her laugh. She would play chess but only against one opponent, having learned early by losing a galleon on a game when the twins ganged up against her. Chess was never a favourite of the twins so they didn’t play often. Once, however, when Ron wanted a game and no one would play, George offered to play with Melody as a team against him. It may have been the most enjoyable game of chess George had ever played, actually, as they’d spent the entire two hour game whispering in each other’s ears as they planned their moves. Ron was disgusted because he wasn’t entirely positive that they weren’t making fun of him as they whispered, but he was placated by a win. Melody didn’t tell him that she threw the game at the end because she knew George was getting antsy at being still for so long. And because Fred was mimicking Ron behind his back and she couldn’t hold in the laughter any longer. Of course, George had no compulsion against telling him she’d thrown the game at the end, but Ron just considered it sour grapes and continued to crow over his win.
A frequent house favourite was the game of truth or dare. Melody always chose to take a dare and developed quite a reputation for it. She had drunk the most vile tasting concoctions, eaten things that made steam come out of her ears (and once her nose), done impressions of every teacher, transfigured Mrs. Norris into a skunk that ended up spraying Filch before they could get her turned back, even adorned the walls of the Great Hall with her own undergarments. McGonagall was sure the Weasleys were at the heart of that one but as she couldn’t prove it…and it never occurred to her to consider Melody… so she’d had to let it go. At first, she’d chosen dare because it was more fun. Later, she’d had another reason to avoid having to spill a truth. Sometimes the game got a little risqué but most avoided giving anything too naughty to Melody, especially after Katie Bell had made her kiss Lee and the glares the twins gave her scared her so badly she wouldn’t play the next time. It had taken Lee two weeks of protests to get either twin to forgive him even though it hadn’t been his fault at all.
When the intense cold of the Scottish winter kept them pent up inside too long, they might release their energy with a rougher game. Both twins prided themselves on their wrestling abilities and could beat anyone in the house. Melody never lasted longer than sixty seconds against them as they both knew how incredibly ticklish she was and always used it against her. Sometimes someone would transfigure some pillows so they could have a pillow fight. While most wouldn’t go against the Gryffindor beaters, Melody knew they pulled their punches with her so she wouldn’t get hurt and used that to her advantage, managing once towards the end of her second year to hit Fred so hard he was knocked into the edge of the fireplace and broke his arm. Melody was aghast and insisted on helping George get him to Madame Pomfrey. As soon as they had been assured that Fred would be alright and been sent back to the dorm, she’d thrown herself against George and burst into tears. George had awkwardly hugged her and stroked her hair…and wondered if he were evil to be so grateful for an injury to his own brother.
When Fred returned with a healed arm, he’d picked her up and bragged about what a little hellion she was in a fight. Melody had tried to explain that he was supposed to be mad at her, but he insisted that he had three brothers who could and had done far worse to him over the years and that he thought it was pretty great that a little thing like her could hold her own against as a big a lug as he. He also noticed an odd look on George’s face and resolved to get to the bottom of it.
That actually wasn’t as easy as it sounded as George himself wasn’t quite sure what was going on. He knew that he hated to be away from Melody, only making it through classes because Fred entertained him. When she’d gotten the flu and been out of commission a couple of days shortly after the holidays, he’d been so out of sorts that no one wanted to be around him, not even Fred. He knew she was a girl and he liked that she was a girl, but he was worried that he was starting to think of her as, well….a Girl. But they were friends and enjoyed being friends. And then there was Fred. Then he would remember holding her while she cried. He quite thought he’d like to try that again. Without her crying, of course. But what would Fred think? The whole dilemma kept him off balance for weeks.
And then, to make it worse, he started noticing how other boys looked at her. Not Gryffindors, of course, because none of them wanted to die an early death. His housemates weren’t quite sure why the Weasleys would kill them since they weren’t, like, dating her or anything. Yet they remained convinced that even looking at her the wrong way would lead to a six foot deep hole. The boys in the other houses weren’t as enlightened. Or smart. It became a common occurrence for one twin to keep Melody occupied while the other accosted whatever hapless male happened to be contemplating speaking to her. Or looking at her. It made no difference what house or year the other boys were in. The Weasley just got right in their faces and hissed whatever horrible thing was the current threat du jour. While the twins were not usually thought of as being particularly scary, everyone in the school knew they had a whole range of spells and potions with particularly embarrassing results. Most of the other boys decided to look in a different direction after a run-in with a Weasley. Rather quickly, in fact. Fred rather enjoyed coming up with specatacularly inventive ideas and always told off the other boys with a grin. George just scared them.
At the close of the school year, Fred brought up the idea that there might be a better way to warn off the others than getting the reputation as the school bullies and suggested he start dating her. Tilting his head, he watched his brother. George was so overwhelmed with jealousy that he couldn’t speak and stalked off rather than kill his own twin. Fred nodded to himself and set off after George with a big grin on his face. For a time, he good-naturedly teased his twin about falling in love. Then he tried to get down to the business of planning how George would win his love. And he got the shock of his life.
George was afraid to tell Melody that he liked her.
