Chapter 2
After Dudley, left the room, Harry rushed back up to his little bedroom. He had to come up with a plan to get to that concert. He just had to be there, preferably front row, center. He knew that couldn’t get to his Gringott’s account. Uncle Vernon would not willingly take him to the zoo anymore, let alone to get money from his secret vault. Uncle Vernon, although he too had calmed down, still accepted nothing out of the ordinary and refused to even acknowledge his presence most times.
Harry knew that if he could get in touch with Hermione then she would know of a way to get to the concert. Hermione was always good at figuring out normal plans. If not Hermione, then maybe Ron could come up with something. Harry wrote them both letters explaining what was going on and how he just needed to go to that concert that night. He told Hedwig to be as quiet as possible when slipping out of the house and returning. Uncle Vernon had agreed to letting Hedwig out a bit more, but that could all change at a moment’s notice if anything abnormal happened.
Days later, Harry was sitting, staring out his window, and hoping for word from either Hermione or Ron. There were only two days left before the concert. Harry had not even heard about when everyone was going to meet up in Diagon Alley to get their school supplies. Harry felt as if no one cared about his plight, that all he was good for was killing Voldemort. Once that was done, no one needed him anymore. He was falling deeper and deeper into a depression. It didn’t help that Dudley still danced around the house singing and dancing to the CD. Aunt Petunia had even begged for the boy to find a different CD.
Time seemed to stand still for Harry. No matter what he did during the days, time crawled by ever so slowly. Time went slowly and no word from his friends. Harry was falling deeper and deeper into his depression. Staring out the window, he had given up all hope that he would ever get to see his love in person. He would only ever be able to hear him vaguely through Dudley bellowing out every single word to every single song on that blasted CD. Harry was at a point in which he wished he had never heard of Jesse McCartney. Harry glanced out the window at approaching lights from the beam of a car.
This was an unusual occurrence. Everyone on Privet Drive was already home from work. Most people didn’t get visitors in the evenings. What was even more unusual was when the car pulled into the drive at #4. Uncle Vernon would always let Harry know when he was expecting someone to visit, although after the incident with Dobby, Uncle Vernon tended not to have visitors when Harry was home.
Harry strained his eyes to see who was getting out of the car. It was a gentleman he had never really seen before, although he looked vaguely familiar. Out the other side of the car was a young female. Oh this was just grand. This must be Dudley’s special girlfriend, that Mary Jane person. Harry sighed and went back to staring at the skyline. He heard the bell ring and didn’t get up. A few moments later instead of hearing Dudley excited, Uncle Vernon was bellowing his name out. Harry got up and went downstairs. He didn’t quite know what to expect and then he got a good look at the visitors.
“Hermione! What are you doing here?” Harry exclaimed when he saw his best friend. He pulled her into a tight hug and whispered a prayer of thanks to the heavens for sending Hermione to him.
“Ahem! Harry, I assume you know these people.” Uncle Vernon ventured.
“Yes, Uncle Vernon. This is my friend from school, Hermione Granger, and um her…”
“Harry, have I never introduced you to my father?” Hermione butted in. “Mr. Dursley, this is my father, Mr. Granger. He is a dentist,” she added quickly, hoping that Mr. Dursley would not throw them out on their arse for her being a witch.
Mr. Granger shook hands with Vernon. “It is a pleasure to meet you Mr. Dursley. My daughter has mentioned your family every year since she has started school. She and Harry have been friends since almost their first day of school, if I’m not mistaken. I’m sure you are wondering why we are here on such short notice. Hermione just told me that we were to pick Harry up for the summer. I’m sure you know how kids are with absentmindedness.”
”Yes, they do tend to forget themselves. I’m still not quite sure why you are here though,” Vernon began.
“Oh, I thought for sure that Harry would have told you. He was invited to spend the end of the summer with our family. He is practically a member of the family, already.”
“You mean the two of them are an item?” Vernon sputtered.
“Well, I’m not sure if item would be the correct word for it, Mr. Dursley. So, if you don’t mind, Harry do you have your things ready? Hermione, you can go help him pack up the last of his belongings, right?”
Mr. Granger was a take charge kind of man, it seemed. He had Vernon Dursley flabbergasted. In just a few sentences he had just told the man that he was taking his nephew away for the rest of the summer with his apparent girlfriend. Harry was still a bit shocked as he walked up the stairs with Hermione following him.
“Mione,” he started, “what is going on? How did you convince your dad to get me to come and stay with you for the rest of the summer? And why on earth does he think we are an item?”
“Oh, Harry, honestly. If my father thought we were an item, do you think he would tell your uncle you were staying with us for the rest of the summer? Really! My father knows that we will be going to the Burrow in a couple of days.” Hermione rolled her eyes at Harry in the way that only she knew how to do.
Together they packed up his room with all of his belongings. Hermione just looked around. As many times as she had heard about where he lived, she just never believed all of the stories he told. She thought that he had to stretch the truth even just a bit. She was shocked to find out how much he left out.
“Ok, all I have left to do is get my broom and Hedwig’s cage from under the stairs,” Harry stated. He knew it was the last time he was going to be in the house, and he wanted to make sure he had everything. Hermione followed him back downstairs and he opened the door. They squeezed in and Hermione had to hold back some tears as she saw the cupboard for the first time. Harry looked over at Hermione and realized that it was hitting her for the first time what his life was really like before he came to Hogwarts. He squeezed her hand, “Let’s go.”
Together, they left the cupboard and walked to the door where Mr. Granger and Uncle Vernon were discussing the ins and out of root canals. Aunt Petunia was standing with him and Dudley was just behind them. Harry looked at Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and Dudley for the last time. He said a clipped goodbye to them, and walked out the door behind Mr. Granger and Hermione.
