Chapter 1: Making Plans
"Don't give me that look JD, I know what you're thinking," I said rolling my eyes at my best friend. "You know as well as I do that we have to do this. We have to change the past so that our family and friends can have a future."
"You're right of course but how do you propose we go back in time over 20 years?"
We had been talking about this for a while already, and had come to the conclusion we would have to go back to when my mom and both of JD's parents were still in school. Voldemore was at his weakest in those years, and therefore it would be the best time to try and destroy him.
We were now hiding in a small muggle town in Ontario, Canada. Voldemort's influence had yet to reach this far and so it would give us some time to work out any details safely.
"Do you remember the time travel spell my mom was telling us about this summer?" I asked quietly.
"Of course I know the spell but it only takes you back one year and your mom said you can only use it once at a time," JD replied rather skeptically.
"JD I know that there is more to you than just your good looks. Think about it. Why can't that spell be altered? Why can't we make it take us farther back? I've had four months to think about this JD and I think I've figured it out. The only thing left is to actually test it. Also we need to figure out exactly what we're going to tell everyone when we arrive."
I was quickly getting excited about doing this as I could see JD was as well.
For hours we talked and worked out every detail for our trip. We knew where and we knew when, now we just had to try out the how, and just pray it works.
"JD you ready? It's time we did this." I looked up at his when I got no response. "What's wrong?" the sad look on his face nearly had me in tears.
"Let's go home first. Let's say goodbye one last time."
"I guess we can. It makes more sense anyways. We're going back to when they can detect underage magic so we have to use as little as possible until we get into Hogwarts, which is easier if we are there to begin with," I replied thinking things over as Jamie began to laugh quietly.
"You truly are Aunt Hermione's daughter. Only the two of you could stop in this situation and think of things so logically instead of the whole emotional aspect to it," JD said to me laughing but having known him my whole life I could see the saddness in his eyes.
"I think I'm more like my dad," I laughed sadly. "I can hide my feelings and continue on with business like nothing's happened."
"You are much like both of them and I know they would be proud of what you're planning to do for them."
I was completely speechless, it was all so much to deal with. One long day just over four months ago everyone I loved was killed save for my best friend. My parents murdered right in front of my eyes. I knew this is what I had to do so JD and I could stop running and so we both could have our family and friends back.
"It's time Mackenzie let's go," JD said taking hold of my arm and aparating us back to Hogwarts.
Once we were both oriented again we took a moment to take in the sight of our once beloved home and school. We had to be quick though. We had learned two months ago that Voldemort had found a way to detect and trace magical signatures of anyone who was against him and that certainly included us.
With JD still holding onto me I muttered what had turned out to be a simple spell. Just as I was finishing, a dozen deatheaters aparated around us wands pointed and ready. It was all I could do to keep from screaming and finish the spell as we started to shimmer out of sight.
