A pair of dark mysterious eyes staring right at her...a beautiful stranger unseen by anyone but herself...an unbidden emotion swirling inside the deepest crevices of her heart...
Hermione awoke with a start. She sat up, her sheets sweaty and her breathing shallow. She had even dreamed about him! She slowly lay herself back down on the pillow as she tried to recall her dream.
It had been about the previous night and the strange man she had seen at the ball. As Hermione thought she realised he wasn’t really a man, he was no older than her but still appeared so much more mature than any of the others...
Who was this guy? Did he go to Hogwarts? And if not why was he there last night? Hermione’s brain was still reeling while she got showered and dressed despite the time and day.
As Hermione was head girl she got her own dorm and bathroom but all this was still in Gryffindor tower and she still used the normal common room. However the privileges granted to her were much appreciated.
The head girl’s bathroom was incredible. The gargantuan room looked like a tropical paradise. In the centre of the room was a massive hot tub, raised above a pool that twisted and turned across the width of the room. The hot tub was almost completely hidden from view due to the vast amount of magical flowers that were being suspended elegantly from the ceiling and were glowing different colours. Hermione had never come across this type before but thought they looked a bit like beautiful lilies. There were even a few enchanted, sapphire blue humming birds darting in and out of the creepers, feeding from the flowers. The steps leading up to the hot tub from the pool were white marble as was the floor and walls. There were statues of marble Gryffindor lions on each side of the pool, water cascading from each of their sets of jaws, open in mid roar. On the other side of the pool, after crossing a small bridge with creepers of the same glowing lilies entwined with the marble railings, there was an enormous vanity mirror, framed in twinkling lights with a dressing table containing Hermione’s things. It really was a beautiful place.
Hermione couldn’t help smiling as she walked in. She couldn’t quite adjust to this new life of luxury, lovely as it was. After all it was only the third day into the year.
She discarded her silken scarlet dressing gown and Chinese style nightclothes and, ignoring the marble steps into the pool, dived head first into the cool blue water with a small squeal.
After a few seconds she surfaced, shaking the water from her face and waded over to one of the lion statues to wash her hair.
Hermione spotted the marble button on the paw of the lion and pressed it. The effect was instantaneous. The water flow stopped and it was as though a white line was being drawn in a square underneath the statue in the water around Hermione. As had happened on the previous morning, the patch of water that she was standing in seemed to be evaporating alarmingly fast, eventually leaving Hermione standing on a square of marble surrounded by a wall of water much like a shower.
Hermione pressed the button on the other paw and the water flow from the lion’s jaws began again, draining away at her feet.
Half an hour later Hermione found herself wandering down the tower steps into the Gryffindor common room. She glanced at her watch. Quarter to nine. As it was a Saturday, breakfast was available from nine 0’clock but due to the previous night she guessed that most people would be sleeping late.
She sat down in a plush armchair by the empty grate and slipped back into thoughts of her mystery man.
Mystery man?!
What was she thinking? He was just probably some student she’d never seen before! Or maybe one of Dumbledore’s spies who came for the celebration of the downfall of the dark lord!
Why was he affecting her this much? It didn’t feel like a crush. Hermione had had many of them before...Ron, Dean and even (she kept the last one quiet) the infamous Draco Malfoy. But that was to be expected, what with Draco being the subject of most Hogwarts girl’s fantasies. He was known as a sex God despite all the rumours of him being a death eater. Hermione supposed the bad boy image just added to the appeal.
In a flash Hermione suddenly remembered the reason she had sat at the table separate from everyone else.
Ron. Hermione felt a wave of guilt rush over her. She ran a finger through her still damp hair and let out a long breath. The poor guy was going to be pretty pissed off with her for today at least.
She hadn’t seen him after she left him the night before. Hermione guessed that he had left and gone to bed. She hadn’t stayed long either. After the stranger disappeared she had made her way to the dance floor, meaning to bid Ginny and Harry good night but instead found them a bit (heh hem) ‘caught up’ with each other. Ah well, at least one good thing had happened during the evening!
Hermione sat in the chair for a little while longer, thinking about the strange events of the previous night before Harry appeared at the spiral staircase, a broad smile on his face.
Hermione looked round. “Hey Harry!”
“Hi!” He plopped himself down in the chair next to her, still smiling the same cheeky grin that Hermione loved to see on his face.
“So I take it from the grin that you got laid last night!” Hermione chuckled.
Harry laughed, slightly embarrassed.
“You could put it like that yeah!” he answered, “God, fuck me, Ron’s little sister is bloody talented!”
“Don’t let Ron hear you say that!” Hermione laughed, but at the thought of Ron her smile faded as another wave of guilt swept over her.
Harry noticed.
“What’s up Herms?” he questioned. Hermione hesitated but figured she could tell Harry.
“Last night...Ron...asked me out...and I...turned him down.” She replied sadly.
“ahh. Right. Don’t worry about him Hermione. He’s your mate, he’ll understand!”
Bless Harry! Hermione thought, he’s so sweet! No wonder Ginny never gave up on him!
Looking for a change of subject, Hermione asked,
“Hey Harry did you see that kid last night? I think he might be new here. He had like...black curlyish hair, it was quite long for a boy i suppose but he was just sitting at a table all last night and I’ve never seen him before.”
“Nope!” he answered, “Never saw anyone! Unless you’re counting gorgeous red heads that give great head!”
“Ewww! Harry!” Hermione giggled, “I didn’t need to know that!”
“Wait there Herm, I’m going to get my sleeping beauty and her not so gorgeous brother up and then we can go down to breakfast together alright?” he started walking back towards the staircase leading to the dormitories.
“Yeah, sure. I’ll wait for you here.”
“Haaary! It’s t-t-oooo early!” Ginny stifled a huge yawn as her new boyfriend dragged her down towards the great hall for breakfast.
“Oh really?” he whispered mischievously in her ear, “I think I know what will wake you up!”
Ginny giggled and Ron rolled his eyes in disgust as the four friends walked down to breakfast wearing their casual weekend clothes.
Thankfully for Hermione, Ron was acting more or less normally towards her. There had been a couple of awkward moments but she hoped they would pass, as she really didn’t want to loose him as a true friend.
At about nine thirty the great hall started to fill up with hungry students and teachers and the food finally appeared on their plates. The four started to fill their faces. Especially (noticed Hermione) Harry and Ginny. God! Really must have been good!
At about ten thirty, the hall was full and Dumbledore stood up to make some announcements. Everyone looked up and fell silent as the old wizard cleared his throat.
“Morning students! I hope last nights celebrations were to your liking!” There was a loud murmur of satisfaction from the house tables, “Excellent! Excellent! Well, I have something to tell you all that I should’ve done at the feast, but as my mind gets older, so my memory does go!”
There was a sudden witter from the students and a small smile appeared on Dumbledore’s face before continuing,
“You may have seen him at the ball but we have a new student amongst the midst of the seventh years!”
Hermione started. She quickly looked up at the headmaster. Was it him? Dumbledore went on, “Liam Maple! He has already been sorted into Slytherin house and I ask you to give mister Maple a warm reception and make him feel comfortable!”
There was a rustling of robes as students tried to get a better look at the new boy. Hermione started frantically scanning the Slytherin table for a head of black hair and suddenly found herself staring into a pair of dark mysterious eyes...
