Decisions and Daydreams

"You really have gone round the bend, you know that right? What on Earth could you possibly be talking about?" Hermione asked.

"You know about as much as I do Hermione. I just found out from Dumbledor. My mother passed more along to me then my eye color it would seem."

"You must have know.. You know what it doesn't even matter just fix it." 'This can't be happening to me. He has managed to ruin my perfect night. Harry and I were finally going to be together' Hermione thought as she collapsed in a chair. "Well, out with it then."

"I've told you every thing I know. You can't be... intimate with Potter. Well, with anyone but me. I don't know how or why but while you were snogging Harry's brains out I was up here slowly dying."

"Well, "Hermione yelled in rage, "I don't care if it kills you. Don't ever pressume to tell me anything." Hermione rose, "Especially what to do with my own body!" Hermione left a shocked Malfoy behind a slammed door.

"Albus you can't be really thinking about this. Harry was meant to be Head Boy." Minerva spoke calmly.

"Minerva I can't agree with you more. Except for the fact that Harry has never once, in all his schooling, had a normal year at Hogwarts. Don't you think the least we could do for him is give him that last fairly care-free year?" Albus replyed.

"But, you must realize, after everything that happened tonight, what could happen. Putting those two together will be trouble..."

"Minerva," Snape interjected," it will cause less trouble to put them together, then if we tried to keep them apart. Fate will find a way, and I don't like it anymore then you do." Snape cut her off,"But the situation remains what it is. There is nothing we can do to stop it."

Reluctantly Minerva did see his point. She turned to Dumbledor, "I'm not saying we prevent them form ever seeing each other, but do we really have to make it so easy for them?"

"There are many benifits to the cards that fate has delt all of us in this house tonight. Harry will be free to finish his seventh year as he should have done all through his schooling. And this will give young Mr. Malfoy and Ms. Granger time to get to know each other. The fact the they are from less then friendly houses will only promote unity and heal wounds that have been left open far to long. It will indeed be an interesting year."

On the First of August the Weasley children, Harry and Hermione returned to the Burrow once more. That morning Hermione decided to tell the boys and Ginny what had happened. Harry had been shooting her questioning glances all morning.

“Want to tell me what happened last night Mione?” Harry asked.

Hermione looked around and saw Ron and Ginny gathering their things. “Harry let's wait for everyone to settle in and then I will tell you the entire story. I’d really rather just go over it once.”

“Ok.”

Hermione got similar questions from Ginny while they were unpacking in her room. Ginny got the same response. Thirty minutes later the four meandered down to the Weasley gardens and sat to hear the story.

“Well, as you all know Harry and I slipped away from the party last night and before your mind or our bodies could get into the gutter Professor Snape came to bring me to the Headmaster. It turns out that…..” Hermione took a deep breath.

“out with it already Hermione. Trust us we can take it,” Ron spoke quietly.

“I’m destined to be Draco’s mate. He knew something was going on while it was happening. It’s like he was there. His mother was veela and so apparently is he. I don’t know what to do but there has to be a way out of this. I need your help.”

“This can’t be possible. There has to be something Dumbledore can do.”

“Harry I don’t think it’s that simple. Veela’s aren’t matched with mates because of some spell,” Ginny interjected. “They are a magical creature almost. It would be like asking a unicorn not to grow a horn. Then they would just be horses.” Ginny turned to Hermione, “Honey you know we all love you, but I don’t think there is anything we can do to get you out of this. It’s fate.”

After much debate and arguing everyone decided that as useless and hopeless as the cause might be they would go to Diagon Alley and research at Florish and Blott’s that weekend. Hermione sat in the gardens long after everyone else had left. She came out after dinner to sit in them again. This was not in her plans. Boy did she have plans and this just wouldn’t do. She glanced at the sky wishing and wondering what she could have ever done to make fate snub her this way. It was then that she saw a black owl making his way toward the Burrow. The bird veered away from the house and landed on the trellis next to her, neatly dropping it letter in her lap. She picked the letter up and unsealed the wax Malfoy crest. She then began to read.

‘Hermione,
The owl’s name is Merlin. I was five when I got him so no jokes on the name please. He is instructed to wait for a response, if you don’t feel like writing to me then feel free to dismiss him now. I know that I am the last person you would want to hear from right now but that is why I had to write to you. I don’t know how much you know or how seriously you take the information you have. When I say I know how you feel, I mean exactly that. I can feel what you feel, deep emotions running in your soul. I know your confused and hurt and feel like your whole world is crumbling at your feet. You’ve felt like that since about 3 o’clock this afternoon. That’s when I felt it from you. This isn’t just a one way thing and should you be so inclined you could know the same of me. I didn’t choose this Hermione any more then you did. We have to figure out what to do next though. If I know my little lion, and I think I do, you’ll be heading for Florish and Blott’s before then end of the week no doubt. I’ve put some books on hold for you there, under your name. Research all you like my dear, there is no changing fate. If you want to reach me before the start of term you know how to find me. I know that you may need some time, but there may not be as much of it as you would like. If nothing else I’ll see you at the start of term. Please remember you and I are linked, whether we like it or not.
Sincerely Yours
Draco

There were many things Hermione could take in a day. She had developed in all the years with Harry a ridiculously high tolerance for pain but this just pushed her over. Draco could be an arrogant, self absorbed prat, that she could handle. She reveled in handling that Draco. But calm and logical Draco just shut down her brain. Well, she certainly wasn’t writing to him tonight. She would take this information, go to Diagon Alley and then after everything else have a talk with the Headmaster. Then maybe she might write him back.
