Chapter 1 ~ Dr. Digmon is Introduced to the Wizarding World
Severus and Dr. Digmon appeared at the Hogwarts gates with a sharp crack. Severus released the doctor’s arms and hurriedly unwarded the gates, unaware of the doctor’s wide-eyed stare as he took in the surroundings.
“Where are we, and how did we get here?” the doctor asked, staring at the large ornate gates and the vast, rolling landscape beyond them.
Severus pushed the gate open and gestured the doctor to enter, which he did.
“We are at Hogwarts castle. It is a school for wizards and witches. I brought you here,” Severus said as he closed and rewarded the gates, “Please follow me doctor, my wife is in the castle infirmary.”
The doctor fell in step beside Severus, keeping up with him easily.
“A school for wizards and witches, eh?” Dr. Digmon said, looking Severus up and down. That at least would explain the strange wardrobe the man wore every time he came to his office. His wife however, dressed normally, “I take it you are a teacher?”
“Yes,” said Severus, “I teach Potions.”
“And your wife?” the doctor asked, curious.
“She is a Spells Mistress,” Severus replied.
The Potions Master was truly nervous. He would never have spoken so freely if he was his usual snarky self. He would have told the doctor not to concern himself with where he was, or how he got here, just what he came to do. But Severus was almost sick with worry. Hermione had gone into labor in the middle of the night, but insisted he wait to go for the doctor since she had time. When her water broke, he had been beside himself. He carried her to the infirmary and Pomfrey before heading out to retrieve Dr. Digmon. Of course, he was supposed to request the doctor’s presence, but Severus’ only thought was to get his wife immediate assistance. And since she wanted the muggle doctor, that’s who she got. Requests be damned.
Dr. Digmon was a muggle who had no idea that the magical world existed until today. The idea didn’t shock him, however. At least it explained the strange behavior of the man beside him when he came to his office for the first time with his wife.

Severus walked into the examination room with Hermione, looking at the assortment of rather frightening surgical steel instruments housed in cups and neat holders lining the wall. He thought the tools better suited for torture than using on a pregnant woman. He sincerely hoped the doctor would not be using them on Hermione or his child.
Severus watched Hermione strip down and change into the open-backed patient robe. She then hopped up on what looked to be a wheeled divan. Severus didn’t know why his wife had to get naked to be examined, and didn’t approve. Pomfrey never required a witch to disrobe during her examinations. She simply made a few waves with her wand and could tell all she needed to know about the condition of the mother and baby. But this was the muggle way, and Hermione was muggle-born, so he did his best to go along with her.
When Dr. Digmon came in, Severus had immediately protested him being male. Hermione reassured him the doctor was qualified and had been taking care of pregnant women for many years. Severus sullenly sat down on a stool and listened as the doctor asked about her last period, nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness or enlargement, urinary frequency, allergies and so forth. Then the doctor told her to lie down on the table.
Severus had risen from the stool he sat on when the doctor examined Hermione’s breasts for soreness. His wife told him this was normal. He sat back down scowling as the doctor mashed her breasts, hating the idea of another man touching her…even if he was a doctor.
Severus had almost attacked the poor man when he donned latex gloves and examined his wife by inserting his fingers inside her and pressing down on her lower belly to feel her cervix. The frightened doctor and an irate Hermione assured the angry Potions Master that this was also normal procedure. Severus sat with his nose flared wide-open for the rest of the examination.
The doctor gave Hermione a bottle of pills with instructions to take one each morning after breakfast. Severus scowled, determined to get hold of the pills and discover what exactly was in them. He didn’t like the idea of Hermione swallowing down muggle medicine. Many times it had very detrimental side effects, and he didn’t want to risk her health or the health of his baby.
When they left the doctor’s office, the couple had a rousing row, which ended with Hermione bursting into tears and threatening to make him stay away when she went for her appointments. She said she would rather go alone then with someone who did not respect her background and traditions. Not wanting to be excluded, Severus had caved in, and over the next few months, watched his wife get strapped to machines, have her blood drawn by needles, be forced to urinate in cups, and get fingered by the doctor, which he never got used to. He was fascinated at hearing the baby’s swishing heartbeat, amplified by a Doppler fetoscope. That was something Pomfrey couldn’t do. And he was completely blown away by the sonogram, and the first sight of his developing child floating in Hermione’s womb. This too was alien to the wizarding world. Muggle technology was amazing, even if their hands on methods were practically medieval. Severus had stared at the photo of the sonogram constantly as they made their way back to Hogwarts, completely absorbed by the small miracle growing inside Hermione. He proudly placed duplicated framed photos in his office, lab, study and bedroom.

Dr. Digmon let out a strangled gasp as Hogwarts Castle came into view. It was magnificent. But the gasp wasn’t because of the castle, though it was impressive. It was because there were people flying about its turrets on brooms. The doctor rubbed his eyes and looked again. Definitely people, in robes, flying about shakily on brooms.
“What’s…who’s…that?” he asked the dark wizard walking next to him, as he pointed at the flying students. They had arrived during one of Madame Hooch’s first-year flying classes. Severus looked up.
“That’s a first-year class. They’re learning to fly,” Severus said as if it were the most normal sight in the world. The doctor assumed that here, it was.
“Oh,” he said just as shortly. Then he asked, “What is the condition of your wife?”
“Her water broke about an hour and a half ago,” Severus said.
“We better hurry then,” the doctor said. They both increased their stride, heading quickly for the main doors.

A/N: So the doctor knew nothing about the wizarding world. He seems like an open-minded fellow, refusing to get ruffled by it. Are the flashbacks working? Should I italicize them to identify them and make them easier to read in context? Please review. I appreciate your thoughts.
