An Ending
Hermione went downstairs of the now quiet house. Walking out onto the porch found Michael sitting staring into the woods.
“So what’s the latest?”
“You know when you say things like that it makes me feel like I’m spying on them!”
He turned his head to look at her, the look was enough, she immediately averted her eyes. Showing him that she was his subordinate .
“Dumbledore has requested I go to the burrow.” still not meeting his eyes she gave the parchment to him.
“I see, this will perhaps make things easier. I have heard the reports from our pack allies, they’ve confirmed that a dark force has remerged in the wizarding world though they didn’t know the specifics I’ve informed them of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and that he has resumed his attempt to dominate the wizarding world. We’ve agreed that he is most likely going to use the underworld to achieve this. The neutrality of our kind will be broken. There are few packs with the desire to make things as they once were.”
Hermione remained silent her input was not required.
“In this case we’ve agreed that our pack shall act as an intermediary between peaceful Prowler packs and those fighting against Him.”
“I am glad to hear that, with the Ministry acting like nothing’s going on Dumbledore will need all the help he can get.” Though her heart sank, her deception would end the truth will come out.
Michael nodded in agreement. “You realise that you will need to come clean about what you are?”
Hermione swallowed loudly, carefully she said “ I knew I may have to one day but do they really have to know about me?”
“Are you questioning me child?” the last was said with an undertone of a growl, he was Alpha, she was his to control.
Immediately she bowed her head “No but I am afraid.”
She felt his hand under her chin and her head was raised to meet his eyes. His eyes that were the same even in his human disguise, a blue that looked violet under certain lights. It was an extraordinary sight they were so different from the brown fur that covered his body when he shook off the façade he wore to fool the humans. He smiled gently at her.
“You’re afraid that they’ll abandon you. These boys who you care so much about, you don’t give much weight to what the others think, Dumbledore and your head of house do you?”
She shook her head she didn’t really, if she was expelled she wouldn’t care too much, she’d miss the learning, the books, the other world that had captivated her interest but it was whether Harry and Ron hated her for her deception that stung. The guilt of it coursed through her every time she had to lie. That Michael knew was no surprise, he was a good leader and a good leader knows their people.
He embraced her and she nuzzled his neck, breathing in the scent that she knew so well, as he did hers.
“Don’t fret little one if they care about you half as much as you do them they will understand. You are still the book mad girl they befriended. I think they may surprise you.” his words were comforting but Hermione wasn’t sure. Michael’s head snapped up quick as lightning. Hermione hear it too, movement through the woods, large something’s were moving swiftly in their direction. Hermione turned quickly to come face to face with the rest of the household. They’d heard the noise too. Now wide awake they looked, waited. A change in wind direction brought the scent of many Prowlers moving through the undergrowth. At once Hermione and the others changed. Their change was swift as they shed their human disguise. Hermione’s was slower but not by much, bones shifted, her skin shed as thick fur burst through, her jaw snapped and stretched as it accommodated her razor sharp fangs. Claws burst from her paws. About a dozen forms came out of the trees. Various coloured fur came into view, browns, tans, blonde and black. Behind her the multi coloured fur of her own pack spread out David’s black fur could be seen out of the corner of her eye as Michael stepped forward.
“You are not welcome here!” He spoke in a growl so low it made Mia shiver.
The response was a chorus of barking laughter. The largest Prowler moved forward in a mirror of Michael,
“Our invitation must have got lost.” Roughly translated they were here to take over. There were more of them but Mia and the others would still fight would still fight. They would protect what is theirs.
The other leader charged at Michael and the others followed. Mia leaped under her attackers arms and darted off into the woods. The wind brought her scent to them but she wasn’t trying to hide. Just get some room for the fight. Even at 15 she had strength and a swiftness that can be fatal. Feeling the other Prowler gaining on her she spun and slashed. Her claws came to contact with the beasts face. He pulled back wiping the blood out of his eyes and golden fur. Another Prowler came in swiftly from her right and lunged at her. Mia flew towards the female jaws snapping at each other claws tearing at each others torso’s. The pain was burning through Mia’s chest but she ignored it, she brought a claw up and clawed at the eyes of the bitch distracted it gave Mia the chance and sunk her teeth into the meet of her throat. Hot blood sprayed into her mouth and across her snout. Pain exploded across her back. She howled in pain. The male had recovered, had clawed through her back, hitting the ribs and the soft flesh below.
In panic Mia dug her claws into what ever of the Prowler she could get. His size only afforded the opportunity to get at his arms. Falling onto her back as she swiped at him but he had the advantage both in size strength and now position. His paws attacked her chest doubling the damage done by the female. Though he was prevented from mauling her as her hind legs kept his lower body away from her. In desperation she used her right leg to slash at his thigh, hoping to get his groin though it did the trick he staggered back enough to get her on her feet. Her fur was dripping with blood the thick brown washed away in a matted raven colour. He moved towards her but she darted out of his grip, he span on his uninjured leg and eyed her more cautiously. Panting she tried not show how injured she was and stood on her hind legs without shaking. They circled each other looking for an opening. Losing patience the male moved first. Sidestepping him as he charged she brought her claws down to his injured leg tearing the femoral artery. In surprise the Prowler turned to look at her feeling his life burst from him in waves of red liquid. Those 20 seconds seemed to take forever. Eventually he fell to the ground Mia didn’t hear the thud that resonated, her heart was beating wildly in her ears the adrenalin pumping through her washing away the pain. She headed back to the house as swiftly as possible, the air stank of meat and death. The combination making individual scents impossible to distinguish. She slowed as the clearing to the house became visible surveying the scene. Horror stuck her as the aggressor stood up and howled his victory. Mia shrank deeper into the growth but she could still see. She saw the invigorated corpses of her kin surrounded with at least 6 bodies of the other pack. A total of 7 prowlers stood with the other leader meaning more attacked from behind. They had been surrounded and massacred. Mai’s brain threatened to explode with the thoughts and emotions that flooded through.
Grief, rage, anger, sorrow, coupled with questions “What now?” “Who would look after her” “Why had they done this?” In this fit of panic her rational brain shut down, survival instinct kicked in.
Hermione Granger Ran.
