I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
What happened?
I ran all the stairs up to the hospital wing. I had to find out what had happened. Perhaps Severus was there. I had called on Dobby to watch the kids while I went to the hospital wing. Why had Severus left so all of a sudden? As I ran through the castle, I saw that there obviously had been a fight. There was blood on the floor and wholes in the walls.
As I came in to the room everyone stared at me. They were standing around Bill’s bed. I walked over to him and saw that his face was all bloody. His face was cut open everywhere. “What happened?” I asked shocked. Everyone around me was looking at the floor. “Will somebody tell me what’s been going on!?” I demanded. Harry looked at me with eyes full of rage and sorrow. “Dumbledore’s dead,” he said, his voice cracking. There was a sound coming from the grounds, the sound of Fawks, Dumbledore’s Phoenix.
Tears ran down my face. Was Dumbledore dead? Who would do something so horrible as to kill Dumbledore? “How did this happen?” I asked. Harry looked away; he wouldn’t look into my eyes. “I will find out sooner or later, so you can just tell me right now!” McGonagall put her hand on my shoulder and stared at me. “Severus killed Albus,” she said, tears running down her face. I stared at her as if she had gone mad. “You don’t make jokes about a thing like this,” I said angry. “No, it’s true, Alexis,” Remus said looking at me. “Severus ran of with the death eaters’ right after he killed Albus.” I felt my vision fading. I got dizzy, everything around me was blurry. “No…you lie!...” I could no longer focus. Everything around me was going white, just like a flash.
I woke up in the hospital wing the next day. I had no idea what I was doing there, but everything I had been told the day before; I decided had been a dream. I got up from my bed; my mission now was to find Madam Pomfrit. I needed to know why I had been brought to the hospital wing. To my right there was a bed which I could not see. It was covered with white sheets that hung from the sealing. My curiosity made me go have a look. I needed to see who it was. As I pulled away the sheets I saw Bill Weasley lying on the bed, his face looked like raw meat. It all suddenly came back to me. Severus was gone, he was a murderer. He had killed Albus and then fled with the other death eaters’. I felt dizzy again, but managed to get a grip. After all I had children who needed me.
I searched the castle to find Minerva. She had to be the one who knew what was going on; after all she was the one to take control of the school if anything happened to Albus. After some time I found her in the old Dumbledore office. When I found her, I felt stupid not to have known that she would be there. She was Headmistress now, off course she would be in Dumbledore’s old office.
“Alexis! How are you feeling?” Minerva asked concerned. Her eyes where all red, she must have been up all night. Probably crying for hours. “Oh, I don’t know yet. I haven’t had the chance to think about it.” I said quietly. “I came to ask you something, if you don’t mind?” She looked at me with sad eyes. “You want to know what’s happened, right?” she said giving me a screwed up smile. I nodded. She quickly dried away a tear from her cheek. I felt truly sorry for her. Albus was her friend thru many years. And sometimes I think they might have been more than just friends.
She told me what had happened the night before. It was tough for both of us as she told the story. My husband, my only ally in life had betrayed me. He had betrayed us all. He had killed Albus without a flinch. The man who had saved his life and kept him alive for many years. Severus had survived on his mercy for years.
I left in silence. This had turned out to be my worst nightmare. I had to be alone, I needed to think. Well, it seemed I would be alone for a very long time now.
I didn’t go for the children until six o’clock that evening. I had been thinking and crying all the time. What would happen to us now? The children and I where all alone now. They did no longer have a father, and I no longer a husband. What would I tell them? “Daddy killed uncle Dumbledore”. No, definitely not! They could be scarred for life because of something like that. I didn’t want to break my children, even though Severus didn’t seem to care. And I had to be really careful about what I told Tobias about his father. Tobias was a beautiful boy, no doubt, but he had too much of his fathers genes. Depending on how long the war would last, Tobias could end up with the death eaters’ in a few years. I may have loved his father unconditionally, but I would not let Tobias go down that path.
I told the children that Albus was dead, that he was very old and had to go, he was too tired to live anymore. I told them that Severus had to go take care of some business, that I didn’t know when he would be back. Anitra took it very well, but Tobias didn’t go too well with my story. He got angry and started screaming, screaming that I was lying. Unfortunately, he had inherited his father’s legilimence abilities. I had never learned how to block it, even though I really should have. Severus had used his legilimence on me for years, and it never came to my advantage.
I had to tell Anitra to go to her room because of Tobias. I didn’t want her to hear what Tobias was saying. He had seen it all in my eyes. He knew that it was Severus who had killed Albus, and that Severus had left us to fight with the dark Lord. His eyes where raging. He was throwing things at the walls. Suddenly he fell down on the floor; crying like a baby. He looked at me with his black eyes, they where just like his father’s eyes. Tears were rolling down his face. He reached his arms towards me, wanting me to hold him. I sat down on the floor and wrapped him in my arms. We sat there crying together for a long time.
The days went by, it was immensely hard, but somehow I managed. During the summer we stayed with my parents. They had heard what had happened from reading the Daily Prophet. Of course they would not have read the whole story, but they roughly knew what had happened. As I told them the true story one late evening; I had big troubles with not bursting to tears again. I had been sitting up every night since the incident; crying my heart out. Now it felt good to be with my family again, and Tobias and Anitra had a good time being with their grandparents. And it helped me a lot; I had the time to relax as my mother and father helped looking after the kids.
Three weeks before start of school term I had to go back to the castle to pick up some OWL’s. They where to be sent to the pupils this week. I had only been in my office for half an hour when an owl came flying through my window. I recognised the owl at once; it was Hedwig, Harry’s owl. I took the note of her leg and gave her a cookie.
Dear Professor Alexis Snape.
I need to speak to you! It is quite important. Can you see me today? I will be in
Hogsmead, at the Three Broomsticks. Four o’clock. Please come. Hermione and
Ron will be here to.
Yours Harry.
Oh no! I thought. No more problems, please. I couldn’t take any more. I was an inch away from a heart attack. Well, I had to go. If he trusted me that much, I could not let him down. I leant back in my chair; lighting a cigarette. Suddenly I heard a familiar voice in the room. “I thought you had given up smoking.”
I jumped up from my chair, my eyes looking around the room in panic. He could not be here, at Hogwarts… I slowly started walking around the room, looking for the source of the voice. Suddenly my cigarette was gone. Someone had taken it right out of my hand. I was so scared I almost pissed my pants. “You know I don’t like that you smoke” he said. I slowly turned around to see Severus standing in front of me with my cigarette in his hand. “You’re not here,” I said scared, backing into the wall behind me. He smiled, walking towards me. “Are you sure?” he asked throwing my cigarette in the fire.
“You’re just a fragment of my imagination,” I said shaking my head. He wrapped me in his arms and kissed me. “Am I still just a fragment of your imagination?” he asked, stroking my hair. I broke into tears. It was really him! He wrapped me tighter in his arms, kissing me again. I put my arms around him, decided that I would never let go of him again. We ended up on the floor; Severus was doing his best to comfort me. But I was crying like a baby. The only words I could utter was; why?
He looked at me without saying anything. He clearly didn’t want to tell me. He placed to fingers under my chin and lifted my head. His smile was full of sadness. “God, I’ve missed you,” he said as he kissed me again. One of his hands was on its way under my skirt. I tried to pull it out, but he was too strong. His kisses where more greedy now, there was no question of his intentions.
I felt used. I was vulnerable, and he used it against me. But because of a certain potion we once drank; that led us to each other, I could not resist him. He knew this, and he had always used it against me. We ended up on my desk, and we stayed there for more than an hour. After this Severus left, not able to promise if I would see him again.
The clock was almost half past three, and I needed to get to Hogsmead to see Harry. My head was just one big mess; I had to pull myself together. Harry probably wanted my advise about something, I could not let him down now after seven years.
When I walked thru the door at the Three Broomsticks, I saw Harry, Hermione and Ron sitting at the table in the darkest corner of the pub. With other words, it had to be something about the Order. I walked over to their table and sat down. Madam Rosmerta came to take my order, which was a double whiskey. I needed something strong after what had happened at the school.
“Thank you for coming, professor,” Harry said looking rather concerned. He was obviously stunned that I had ordered a whiskey, as he had never seen me drink alcohol before. “Is everything alright?” I looked at him, thinking to my self; is anything alright?! “Of course, Harry, it’s just been a hard day. And as I have told you a hundred times before; call me Alexis” I said smiling. “Now, what did you want to talk to me about?”
“Before Dumbledore died, he gave me a mission,” Harry started. “A mission that will help me kill Voldemort when the time comes. To do this I have decided to quit Hogwarts. Ron and Hermione has decided to help me, therefore they will quit school as well.” I stared at them, not able to believe what he just said. “Why on earth would you want to do that?!” I asked perplexed. I drank half the glass in one swallow. “My God! That’s disgusting!” I said making a screwed up face. Harry smiled at this, clearly happy to see that I was back to my old self.
“The mission that Dumbledore gave Harry will take too much of our time, we won’t have any time left to study,” Hermione said seriously. If Hermione considered the mission that great, there was no question about it. In Hermione’s third year at Hogwarts, she had managed to take all the subjects that Hogwarts could offer a student, and she did it with top grades in all of the subjects. No other student had ever done that.
“Well, if you put it like that, I suppose I have to give up persuading you to stay,” I said sadly. She had been my best student ever, and it would be a great loss for the school and the wizarding world. I quickly looked around the pub before I lighted a cigarette. I had to make sure Severus wasn’t there to watch me. Harry looked concerned again. “Are you sure you are quite all right? You look pale,” he said staring at me. I smiled slightly. “Not to worry, Harry, I’m fine.”
“What we wanted to talk to you about,” Harry said leaning over the table. “We wondered if you could do some private teaching for us this year? You know; potion, charms, defence against the dark arts and so on.” I looked at him, slightly chocked. Did they really think that I was the right person for this? I was flattered, of course, but really, there where other people that could teach far more than me.
“I’m not qualified to do that, Harry,” I said smiling as I breathed in the nicotine. “Surely you can find someone with more skills than me.”. “The only two people that could have done that aren’t around anymore,” he said drinking the rest of his butterbeer. “As Dumbledore is dead and… professor Snape has left; you are the only one. And you are the only one we can trust. You know us better than anyone. And you where after all married to Snape, therefore I suppose you know more about the dark arts and potions than the most people.”
I felt it sting in my chest. “Where married to Snape”. My throat felt like wire, cutting up everything in its way. “Even though he is gone, I am still married to him,” I said quietly. “You see, Harry, there is nothing in the marriage contract that says; if your husband turns out to be a death eater, your marriage will be legally terminated. That is obviously no excuse. But I get your point, don’t worry.” All three of them looked perplexed, they obviously hadn’t thought of it like that.
“But you’re right, I probably know a lot more than other people when it comes to the dark arts and potions,” I said, talking my way out of what I had said about marriage. “I will of course help you; if you are sure you want me as a teacher. Personally, I think there are a lot of other people out there that is more qualified than me. But it is your choice.”
He smiled; of course he knew I was like butter in his hands. I had always loved him, and I would have done anything for him. He knew this.
“So, where are you staying during your mission?” I asked slightly concerned. “I do hope you are looking after your selves. I don’t want anything to happen to you guys.” Harry looked at me and smiled. “I inherited Sirius’ house, so we live there at the moment,” he said running a hand thru his bushy hair. “Well, it’s not the greatest place in the world, but it could have been worse I suppose,” I said putting out the cigarette. “So, how’s the mission going?” Hermione cleared her throat very loudly. “Well, Hermione is doing a lot of research, and as Harry and I aren’t very good at that… well,” Ron said looking guilty. “I should have known,” I said looking at Ron and Harry with a strict eye.
I decided not to tell either of the kids about Severus. I didn’t think they would go too well with that. Actually I decided not to tell anyone, they would probably accuse me of being a spy for the dark side or something. Anyway, I needed to pull my head together. There were loads of things to be done before start of term. Minerva had even asked me to be her Vice-headmistress and head of Griffindore.
I had absolutely no idea what lied ahead...
As I came in to the room everyone stared at me. They were standing around Bill’s bed. I walked over to him and saw that his face was all bloody.
