Chapter 2 ~ "The Question"
Chapter 2
“The Question”
Katie shifted slightly on the balls of her feet while watching everyone dance. A sad sigh slipped past her lips, and instantly she regretted it. Amber eyes turned her way, a question in their depths. She smiled brightly, even though it was forced. Her date shrugged minutely and looked away.
‘Gosh…what do I say?’ Katie thought, her forehead scrunching up in concentration.
“Um…so…where are your friends?” she asked, trying to start up a conversation. Remus shrugged, his head still turned away.
“I think they are trying to help Bahamut spike the punch.”
Katie nodded, just slightly discouraged. In the corner of her eye she could see her friend Moe waving at her.
“Um, excuse me for a moment Remus. I’ll be right back.”
A small nod was her only answer. Katie sighed dejectedly, her shoulders slumping. Her feet dragged as she strolled over to her black haired friend. Moe put her hand over her mouth, trying to catch the giggles that were escaping. Katie glared, her blue eyes flashing in the light. The giggles escalated and before she knew it Moe was bent at the waist, laughing like a mad woman.
“Fine, fine, laugh at me all you want! At least your crush talks to you!”
Moe finally got herself under control enough to pat her friend’s shoulder. A sympathetic smile passed across her lips when she caught the sad sparkle in the pale blue eyes.
“Mirei was only trying to help you know. I’m sorry that she made things worse.”
Katie shrugged and turned her head towards the man in question. His amber eyes were focused on her.
“Um…Moe…do you think I should as him to dance?” she whispered, her mouth barely moving. Her answer was a laugh and a push towards Remus. On shaky legs Katie walked back over.
“Remus, would you like to dance?” she asked, her voice wavering. Remus considered a moment before answering.
“No thank you.”
Even though the tone was polite enough, it still stung the girl. She nodded, her smile faltering. Remus turned away again. The coldness of the gesture brought tears to Katie’s eyes.
“You could have said no,” she murmured. Remus grunted in question.
“You could have said no to Mirei when she forced me to be your date!”
“Why didn’t you?”
The quick retort startled Katie. His eyes were trained to hers, his mouth a thin line. Katie ducked her head, a blush forming on her cheeks.
“I wanted to get to know you. I’ve seen you around school. I mean, we’re in the same house and we have never spoken. I just…I mean…”
Katie choked back her tears and swiveled away. Her head bowed to her chest and she clenched her fists.
“I like you,” she said quietly, “I like you a lot. I just wanted to be near you. But me being near you is making you miserable, so I’ll go.”
As she started foreword a hand caught her arm and pulled her around. His eyes took in her bowed head, the quivering lips, and the tear streaks on her cheeks.
“You don’t have to go,” he murmured. Katie shifted her head, her eyes catching his.
“But you don’t want me here! You don’t want…”
A gasp sprang to her lips as she was interrupted.
