Chapter two: Potions and Spying
Severus stood over the simmering caldron, watching as the colors mixed and turned together the potion taking on a aqua color as he slowly added more to it. He was being careful to go slowly, only three of the original fifteen potions he had started with still around, the one he was working with at the moment seeming to cure the rats far more then the others of there illness, the only problem was them dieing soon after from the other toxins. He glanced up only briefly to see if the other had arrived yet, not sure if she was going to be coming back as often as she started out doing, thinking that she might now have started to get tired of it all after a week. He hated to think that he might actually miss having the company, even if few words where actually exchanged.
Hizashi once more entered the room.. Her hair in a messy bun on the back of her head. Her school uniform was still on her form from the day of classes she had. Which she and placed her things next to the door as she always did since starting helping the Potions Master. She looked slightly tired and pale, which wasn\'t anything new to the girl, seeing as last night she had a mission to do. She didn\'t mind. Walking to the table she worked at most of the time she idly got to work with a hard to make Healing potion that had been outlawed a few years ago \'cause of its habit of blowing up inside a person. She didn\'t say anything though, something odd seeing as she normally atlease said hi.
He watched as she entered the room, his eyes following her when she made her way to the other side and started working. Setting down what he was doing and writing down where he stopped he looked up again, taking note of her appearance and over all tired looking form. He waited a moment more as he stepped away from his work space, moving to his desk to write a few things down. \"You seem a bit sleep deprived, perhaps you should take some time to rest instead of extra work.\"
She startled at the sound of his voice, fear flashing in her eyes before she looked at him.. She blinked owlishly afew times before speaking. \"I am fine, Professor.\" She said this softly and then went back to work.. knowing that she had to be careful with the potion or it would blow up in her face.
He nodded watching what she was working on now as he moved to the side of the desk, leaning against it and crossing his arms over his chest. Seeing that she was concentrating rather hard on it he made sure that when he approached her table he did so from the side so she saw him walking over, not wanting whatever it was she was making today to go wrong. When he started to speak again he made sure his voice wasn’t as sharp as it normally was, as well as quieter. \"Do you want any help?\"
Hizashi turned silver eyes to him and meet his eyes for a mere minute before looking at the potion. \"Only if you want to help. I am sure I can do this myself.\" She bit her lower lips slightly and added unicorn hair to the potion, watching it as it suddenly boiled and seemed to hiss in anger, Silver eyes widing as she quickly turned the heat down and a soft sigh pushed pass pale lips. Before she pulled out a book that had been shrunk to fit in her pocket, placing it on the table she tapped it once with her finger and then opened it to a marked page... The infomation on the potion all on the page. It was a book that most people didn\'t even knew was around. there was only ten copies of it in the world.
He gave a light shrug, moving back just a little from the table and leaning into another table that was not being used for anything. \"I’m sure you can.\" He stayed to watch however, finding it interesting that she was actually trying such advanced magic that most fully trained would simply dismiss. \"You know as your head of house I can’t help but wonder why exactly you spend so much time here?\" It was less a question because he was head of house then his own curiosity as to why another would spend the time here, he was sure if she really wanted to work on these she would be able to find some secret room to do so.
She blinked the question slightly startled her really.. but she just bite her lip a bit, thinking on this... Before she spoke, softly. \"I am not really sure, Prehaps that I just feel safe knowing there is someone near by that can help me if I have a question... or if the potion blows up in my face.\" She closed her eyes, as another reason flowed from her mind and out her mouth before she realized the mistake. \"Or perhaps it\'s because here I don\'t have to worry about the depression coming back...\" It was true however, normally Hizashi would have cut herself a few times without anyone around.. but for the past week, she hadn\'t cut... Even when she was alone... this confused the girl to no end but knew it wasn\'t a bad thing.
He gave a slight nod to her first answer but seemed to become slightly concerned with her second. Not wanting to press to hard about it but this time talking because he did need to find out as head of house. \"Is there a reason that you have to worry about that, or anything else that might hurt you?\" He hid his concern about it as best he could, there were a very small few that he actually started to try and watch out for but when he did it was hard to hide it from them. \"If there is something that you have to worry about you can tell me you know.\"
She blushed a bright color and busied herself with the potion... She was silently calling herself every bad word she could think of, even Mudblood, though the young was not one. She was pureblooded... It was just that she never had herself slip like that before. \"It coulds with being bored sir... I am sure you remember the talk about boredom we had when you first showed me this place?\" She shurgged and let him do the math, if he remembered he would get the point.
He gave a slight nod but kept watching her, he was sure that her answer was far from the whole truth, and though he could have gotten the rest of the answer he decided to wait for now. \"If its only boredom then perhaps you should find more then just this to keep yourself busy with. In some cases if going into Hogsmeade is not fulfilling enough for a more responsible student they can get permission to leave the area as often as they like. Being that some can get out already for other things, it wouldn’t be to hard to simply let them have that privilege all the time, and not just when they would need to go for something in
particular.\"
She sighed and looked at the Potions Master before speak.. \"Boredom isn\'t my problem. Depression is. I don\'t have anyfriends, and you mind as well say I don\'t have a family.\" She turned silver eyes to the potion watching idly as it turned from a pale pink to a dark green, showing that was almost done. She walked over to her bag and pulled out a bottle with red liquid that looked like blood.... Humen blood.
He stayed where he was, his eyes falling away from her now however as he looked down to the ground, trying to think of exactly what to say to that. He wasn’t exactly sure of a good answer to that even though he was trying hard to come up with one. An odd sort of smirk crossed his lips for a moment as he thought for his cure for that same problem, he forced it away however, knowing it wouldn’t be a good fix for her in anyway. \"You can try...joining a club.\" His own voice was filled with doubt when he said the words, not thinking it was a very good idea himself, but he tried anyway. Knowing it was what he heard others suggest for some of their students, though those were always the lazy ones that were normally encouraged to do such a thing.
She blinked at him and then shurgged as she looked at the bottle and walked to the potion, muttering a \'please don\'t blow up\' and then opened the top and pour six drops into the potion, before moving next to Snape as the potion turned an angry gray and then a blood red before turning a pale purple color.
He looked back up and watched as the potion changed color, his eyes moving back to her. \"There’s other things to you could do, maybe talk with another student in your year, I’m sure its not to hard to make friends if you put a little effort into it.\" He could tell that he wasn’t sounding very convincing any longer, he didn’t really believe in his own words and never liked trying to lie to someone who he was honestly trying to help.
Hizashi blinked at the professor and shurgged. \"I have tried.\" She moved closer to the potion and eyed it. \"Well... Atleast it didn\'t blow up... Unicorn Hair and humen blood don\'t really like each other...\" She sighed and made notes and what the potion looked like... after that all she would need to do is test it. Somehow.
Dropping the subject now when it seemed she was less worried about it then he was he watched the potion. \"No Unicorn Hair and Human Blood never do seem to go well together.\" Seeming to be thinking around the same line as she was with the testing it he pointed to the wall were the covered cages where. \"There’s things other then rats if you need.\"
She blinked and nodded. \"Thanks... May I ask why you are helping me?\" She seemed intrested in knowing as she paused in her writing to look at him. After all... He should know that Hizashi was doing things against the law and the headmaster.
Tilting his head to the side he gave her a calculating look for a moment before answering. \"For the one part I was trying to help as your head of house. For this.\" He motioned to the potions. \"You have potential, and though some may think that I chose the wrong field with teaching, I actually do rather enjoy teaching those who put enough effort into things. As far as what your working on, I see no reason why you can’t as long as your not planning on killing someone with it, and I’m sure that that isn’t your reason for it. These things are also not illegal for a potions master to work on, so with you in here with me I need not worry about a slytherin going to Azkaban.\" He knew there were a few other reasons but stopped there for now.
Hizashi blinked and then smiled brightly at the Potions Master. \"Well think you.\" She felt Happy about the comment on her \'potential\' and moved to the cages, picking one of the cages, she looked at the animals and things to test the potion on... Which one? hmmm.
He watched as she looked over the animals, he made sure not to keep anything to cute, smart or magical feeling slightly bad if the potion didn’t work the right way. There were however quite a few cages of rats as well as three different dogs in larger cages under the table, he didn’t know if she saw them or not but was glad that he had other things there as well, knowing that questions might be asked if it was found out what he normally liked to test his more dangerous potions on.
She blinked and picked a nasty looking rat, before bringing it to the table, and with gloves on, feed it two drops of the potion, before taking out her wand and muttering a spell that showed the potion and what it was doing, and what the rat\'s reaction was to the potion... Oddly... The Heart of the rat sped up and the potion worked through the rats body, killing any and all toxins.
He watched carefully, seeing that the rat was better off now as well as, it seemed, not affected adversely by the potion. \"Seems to have worked then.\" He gave a faint and vary quick smile, the emotion never reaching his eyes however and the smile fading quickly from his lips. \"Good job. Perhaps you should try it on something that has other illnesses in its system to find out what else it might counter act.\"
She took her notes and blinked... Listening to Snape but in a way worried... something wasn\'t right. She reach a finger into the cage and poked the rat, only to yake her hand away with the thing moved quickly to try and bite her... abit too quickly for most rats.
Taking not of the same thing he crossed over to were she was, staying far enough back to stay out of the way but close enough to watch what was going on. \"Something you didn’t expect?\" Watching the small animal he waited to ask or do anything more until she took the time to figure it out, wondering if there even was a mistake with it, or if it was simply meant for something bigger then rats and that was the problem.
\"It\'s not what I thought would happen...\" She frowned, and looked over the mix of things in the potion... The only thing that she could think of is the blood.... but why would her blood do that? She shook her head. \"I\'ll need to try it out on afew other animals... Larger ones... \" She looked at the rat... idly wondering if it would do that to humans.
He nodded. \"There should be a few dogs under there if you need something a lot bigger. If not that big there are larger, river rats, as well as a few opossums that might work well for it.\" He moved back away from the table to where he had been leaning against the empty work space, feeling that there was nothing really wrong at the moment.
She nodded, and sighed, taking notes and then tilted her head back for a bit... lost in thought.. silver eyes gazed over and her mind wondering slightly. her back arched slightly, and her body balancing itself it would seem as she just lost herself in the thoughts before she would snap herself out of it. She was getting sidetracked.
He waited and watched, for some reason finding that watching her work on this and trying to figure out the problem was more interesting then working on something of his own. Remembering about the other animals however and how she said she needed to test it on one he finally talked again. \"Did you want me to get one of the others ready for you to test it?\"
Hizashi blinked and shurged. \"If you want to...\" She bite her lower lip.... She wasn\'t use to the help, but for somereason she didn\'t mind.... she kind of liked having him around.
Noding he watched for a moment longer before turning from where he was and walking over to the area by the animals. Carefully he opened one of the cages and took hold of the dog by the scruff of its neck, pushing it into a larder cage used for observation. \"Do you need more to be done with it?\" He moved away from the cage now and pushed off his heavy teaching robe, not wanting the upset animal to grab hold of the long sleeves or the ends and pull him to it.
\"Nope.\" Hizashi looked at the dog, doing the math in her head, she moved, and grabbed her \'snack\' from her bag, a diner roll. She tore it into a half and put six drops into the roll before eatting the unpotioned half and giving the half that had the potion to the dog. Before once more castting the spell to see what was going on. The Potion quicken the dog\'s heart and then infused with the blood to kill off any toxins. But as she watched she noted something.. The Potion was healing any problems with the dog, even any scars the dog may have... Her eyes widened again and she then sighed. \"I wonder how long that lasts?\" She pulled out a small knife, and used magic to move the knife and cut the dog\'s nose lightly before moving it back to her hand... The dog acted as if he didn\'t feel it... and the cut healed in a matter of minutes.
He watched from a little ways back from the cage, finding it interesting what she was able to accomplish with the animal. \"It would be interesting to see how fatal the wound can be before the potion has no effect any longer.\" He paused watching what was happening with it for a moment longer before looking back to the rat that had been tested first. \"Are the effects still working on something with a faster metabolism? Another would be to see if the effects of the potion stay or if the scars and sicknesses return once its out of the system.\"
She nodded at the potions master before moving to the rat, she muttered the spell, and looked.. The potion was still in it\'s system... So. She pulled out the knife and stabbed the little thing with it. Watching as the wound healed up with only a bit of blood, though it took a bit long then the cut on the dog\'s nose. \"I am thinking, as long as it isn\'t death, then the potion can heal the wound. Just with the larger ones taking the most time to heal.\"
He nodded watching as well. \"These two will have to stay quarantined for a few days, until your done with all of your tests.\" Glancing around the room he looked to the clock that was on one of the far walls, seeming to think about something when he noted the hand pointing to ‘almost late’. Looking away from it he didn’t say anything, remembering what it was and not really thinking it was as important as what was going on at the moment.
She nodded and then tilted her head. \"Odd...\" She sighed and closed her eyes... The drops she gave them should last up to two hours. \"But... What if the potion doesn\'t leave their system?\" She just seemed to be thinking aloud now.
He watched quietly, arms folded over his chest as she started to talk to herself about what she was doing. Somehow finding it interesting to watch her work, as well as think about what could be happening with the animals she was testing it on. Leaning against the table behind him he stayed quiet as she worked, not wanting to distract her.
She blinked and looked at her kinge oddly for a minute, before wipping it off and putting it away. She then sighed... And started testing different things out on the poor rat... testing sicknesses and spells that hurt... It was two hours later when she turn cutting the thing again.... this time the cut didn\'t leave, but another then that, the rat was in perfect health.
Noting how late it was starting to get he finally moved from where he had been watching her, making a few notes in a book on his desk as he glanced to the clock on the wall once more. \"I wonder if you’ll be in here for a while longer? I’m needed to go somewhere shortly, and I trust if you need to stay longer I don’t really need to stay and watch. You will however need my passwords.\" Picking up his robe but not putting it on he made his way to one of the doors near the back of the room, but didn’t enter it yet.
She blinked and looked at him. \"Why would I need your passwords?\" She frowned at him and then tilted her head cutely. \"I can leave now if you wish... I should be getting to bed soon, anyways..\" She frowned, biting her lower lip softly.
\"If you’re done for the night, I don’t mind however if you did have more to do at the moment. I can assure you that you don’t need to worry about your head of house getting at all upset as long as your in here working on this.\" Opening the door now he left into the other room for a few minutes before coming back out with a heavier black trailing cloak on. \"Have you decided on what you’re going to do then?\"
She blinked watching him, before tilting her head... Her mind made up, she nodded to him. \"I think I\'ll stay, thanks.\" She grabbed her quill and paper, writting.. \"I need to write this notes, and then bottle the potion...\" Really the girl was going to do that with magic as soon as he left and follow, but he didn\'t need to know that. She was after all, wondering about her Professor.
Giving a nod, he double checked to see that all of the things he had been working on before were stable. \"The password to lock the doors when your done is Dunharrow. For the store closest is Gondolin.\" Giving a nod he moved to the front of the room, pushing open the door and letting it shut softly behind him as he moved threw the halls, making his way out of the castle now as he started to trek across the grounds in the direction of the forest, glancing around to see if anyone was about as he disappeared into the thick tree cover. He made sure to concentrate on the way to get where he was headed to, knowing that there was never any direct path to where he was going.
Hizashi flicked her wrist as soon as he was done and then muttered the passwords to lock the doors to both things as she lefted, making sure she was far enough back to hear he didn\'t know she was there but close enough to see him...She followed... Silently... and easily in the shadows... Knowing she was trainned for this kind of thing.
Finally picking up on a small flicker of light off in the distance he moved a little faster, not wanting to miss it. Finding that the forest suddenly thinned out quite a bit he moved into the opening, looking to the large tree that was there. Walking up to it he looked for where the opening would be, placing a hand to the bark just under where the light was hung, finding the right spot he walked forward siding into the fake tree in the same way one entered the train station. Finding himself now in the darkly lit, but large room he let a very small light grin cross his lips, glad that he was able to get to the place in time. Making his way into the room he placed himself at one of the tables in the corner, the low music that was playing from no where really covering up the sound of the whispers that the people, or for the most part human like people, here talked in.
She watched him, and then entered behind him.. still staying to herself, she blinked and moved slightly... Easily finding him... She watched him... Why she followed, other then just being herself and wanting to know, she wasn\'t sure... but she did.
Ordering something quite strong when the waitress came over to him he looked over the ever changing bar, watching the different people go about their business. He found it sort of odd that the room was so big yet the amount of people in it so small, remembering the first time he found the place and knowing most of the people were ether off in side rooms or wanting the space to take care of things that were best done without people right around them. Relaxing slightly after the first few sips from his drink he wondered exactly what he would actually do tonight, eyes wandering over some of the woman at the bar, but knowing he wouldn’t actually get up the nerve to talk to them. He had the odd feeling that he was being watched but tried to ignore it, knowing there was usually a few people hiding and making sure to step in if any fights started.
Hizashi studied the Potion\'s Master and bite her lower lip.. Feeling bad for following.. She turned slightly, thinking about heading out... And then pausing... A man was very close...One that didn\'t look to happy... plus he was drunk... She could smell that. But what she stop for was the fact she knew this man... The memeories flashing through her eyes wildly... She forced herself to look away and look at Snape... Trembling slightly...She edged away from that man and deeper into the shadows to head out.
Drinking a bit more, and being quite oblivious to what was wrong with the girl whom followed him there he was finally able to relax quite a bit, shrugging off his trailing cloak as he leaned back. Eyes trailed over the room for a while longer before the alcohol started to take full effect on him. Ordering a second drink he shut his eyes for a moment and gave a silent sigh before opening them again. This time not really looking at anything in particular as he glanced around the room, loving the way his mind sort of stopped working for now, not really remembering what he even came here for.
Hizashi watched Snape for a while... She seemed to have quickly gotten over the fear, and found a seat in the shadows where she watched from... Every now and then looking around... Her mind wondering on her... She watched as the normally uptight Professor relaxed... Silver eyes widening. She forced her thoughts away from things about the Professor she knew she really Shouldn\'t be thinking about forcing herself to watch.
After a while the small girl slipped out of the place and back to the school, her mind going over what she just found out about the potion\'s master and the place she had just been in... It was clearly not a place she should even be seen in. Ever. but then again... either should the professor.
