Chapter Two: The Beast Within

\"There is something haunting in the light of the moon; it has all the dispassionateness of a disembodied soul, and something of its inconceivable mystery.\" - Joseph Conrad

“Severus, where’s Miss Granger?” Minerva McGonagall asked, tense lines of stress visible in her face as well as pure exhaustion.

“She’s in the library. Why?” The Potions Professor had been about to enjoy a glass of Firewhiskey when the Head of Gryffindor had burst in and demanded to know where her precious student was.

“Well, she’s not anymore. Or anywhere else in Grimmauld Place.” Her voice betrayed a deep concern for the girl. Was he the last to learn that the Muggle-born had been head over heels for Lupin? Gods.

“I haven’t seen her.” He kept his voice even and took a sip of his drink.

The elder Head of House made a noise of disgust and left the room, muttering about finding the Headmaster to aid in her search. Severus downed the whiskey, and found his thoughts drifting back to earlier.

Perhaps his ‘comments’ towards Miss Granger had been a bit cruel, but he had been in a fouler mood than usual. Despite being a werewolf, Lupin had been a good man, and at least attempted to rein in the hooligans that had been his friends. But what reason did he have to kill himself?

“I can never forgive myself for what I’ve done to her.” He said, speaking his thoughts aloud.

What ‘her’ had the ex-Professor been alluring to? The only person who came to mind was Hermione Granger, but what in Merlin’s name had he done to her that he had stabbed himself over? Lupin wasn’t enough of a fool to have slept with the Gryffindor, in Snape’s mind.

He gritted his teeth as a burst of searing pain shot through the Dark Mark in his arm. For a moment, Snape was stunned. There were no Revels planned for at least a month? What had happened that was urgent enough to have Voldemort summon someone low in the ranks as him?

The thought that he had been betrayed crossed his mind, as it always did before a Dark Revel. No spy is perfect. Scrawling out a note to Dumbledore as to the reasons of his absence, Snape Summoned his Death Eater mask and Apparated to Malfoy Manor.

Hermione groggily opened her eyes and shivered. She felt a cold stone floor underneath her hands. What the hell? She sat up and shrieked in shock when the face of Peter Pettigrew popped in front of her.

“Welcome to the party.” He bared his rotting yellow teeth, and Hermione froze in fear. Where was she, and why was Wormtail there? Her hand went to her robe pocket for her wand, but a frantic search turned up nothing more than lint. Hermione scrambled away on all fours from the disgusting man as he reached for her and knocked right into a crowd of masked Death Eaters. All of them stared at her, and she paled.

“This is a dream,” Hermione said clearly, trying to convince herself. “Just a nightmare. Nothing’s real.” She whispered as the Death Eaters began to part, and the young witch heard the hiss of a serpent. “No.” She whimpered, and saw Pettigrew give her a sickening smile.

“I’m so glad you could join us, Miss Granger.” Voldemort’s rasp of a voice grated through Hermione’s skull, and she clutched her hands over her ears in pain. Nagini slithered behind him and hissed at the fear-struck girl, revealing her long fangs, slick with venom.

“What the hell do you want?!” She cried out, voice shaking.

“It seems that you have a secret, Miss Granger. One of the saints of the Golden Trio is a werewolf.”

All around her, the Death Eaters burst out into a series of howls and barks. Hermione screamed, trying to drown out the noise. Voldemort raised a hand, and the masked wizards quickly quieted down. The Dark Lord sneered at Hermione, looking down at her as if she were no more than an annoying insect.

Gathering her courage, Hermione spat. “And where did you get that bit of information, you rotten snake?”

Voldemort laughed, as did the Death Eaters around him. “You foolish Mudblood, Wormtail has been watching your experiments with the werewolf since they began. He saw you get attacked. Didn’t you know that the infection can be reversed before your first change?”
“That’s a myth.” She said softly, but felt a sinking feeling in her stomach.

“Too bad you’ll never get to find out. Considering that the moon has now risen.”

At his words, Hermione started screaming as her body was wracked with agony. She convulsed in pain, and a choked howl escaped her lips as fur began to sprout all over her body. She ripped at her robes with clawed hands and all over, bones snapped and knitted together into her new lupine form.

Rage and primal hunger filled the werewolf, who instantly lunged at Voldemort, and fell back with a howl as a silver barrier shot up when the creature’s claws were an inch from his face. Had Hermione been in a normal state, she would have noticed the enchanted silver circle embedded in the floor.

“Wait until she shifts back. The first change is usually rather quick and violent. Have your fun, my servants. When you are finished, tell me and I will return to inform her of our plan.”

As the werewolf began howling in pain, the Death Eaters’ eyes returned to the silver circle. Hermione had clawed herself up badly and was breathing raggedly as she returned to her human form. Her amber eyes widened a moment before she passed into blissful unconsciousness.

They swarmed upon her with a fiendish glee.
