----------------------

Harry didn’t know when it had happened. He couldn’t pin point the exact moment he had fallen for the Slytherin Prince. He could only guess that it had been sneaking up on him till it finally knocked him over on his ass during one of there first real meeting. But this one had been more private and much more recently.

*Flashback*

Harry couldn’t sleep. This wasn’t unusual for him. Sleep was something that he didn’t need to get in quantity. Since the worst summer of his life he has spent his summers in different places training, but also spending time with the Weasley’s and Remus alternating and being generally happy. He had done a lot of military, martial arts, magical and combat training all at the same time which had left little time to sleep, do homework, and still keep up with his friends.

At the moment he was in Hogwarts heights point, just above the Astronomy Tower. He had accidentally found the small room when he had tripped on his robes next to one of the pillars and discovered a hidden door. With a little help from magic he had managed to clean the room and make it a place just for him to be himself alone. He was leaving the room when he came across the dark form of none other than the boy-who-lived-to-distract-him.

Draco had had a lot to think about with the coming war and didn’t know what to do. On one hand he wanted to make his father proud. He wasn’t blind. He knew his father wasn’t perfect, and that not everything his father told him was actually the truth. Draco didn’t really mind muggleborns or muggles really. He knew after graduation he was going to get marked if he didn’t do something about it. He turned as he heard a panel open, not to far from where he was sitting, to see Harry Potter freeze at the entrance.

Things hadn’t seemed right between them for a long time. They had hardly acknowledged each other existence much less fought. Draco didn’t know why it just hadn’t had the same appeal to it as it had in previous years. He chalked it up to maturity. “Good evening, Potter.”

Harry didn’t know what to do for a moment, but since Malfoy was being polite he figured he could be to. Harry simply inclined his head slightly. “Malfoy, what bring you out this late night?”

Draco hesitated to answer for a moment. What better person to bounce his thoughts from then from the person that would be his enemy if he followed in his fathers wishes? Draco figured that he had finally gone off the deep end with those thought. “I’ve got myself a dilemma really. If you really wish to know make yourself comfortable. ”

Harry was surprised that Malfoy had answered. This would be considered the first civil conversation that they would have ever had, ever. Did he really want to do this? Hesitantly, Harry set himself near, but not to close to Malfoy and decided to listen. “I’m listening.”

Draco turned to Potter and look into his rivals emerald green eyes to see that he was seriously listening. Draco took a deep breath and plunged into insanity. “I received a letter from my father, not that I didn’t already know what it would contain since I was old enough to say curses, telling me that I am to take the Dark Mark the day after graduation; silly of me to think that I would have more time, but there no denial about it now. He made sure I understood that as a Malfoy it was my duty to continue as all Malfoy’s have, to be the dark wizard I was born to be. On and on with more drivel about Malfoy pride and taking destiny into our hands to change the world,” Draco paused for a moment looking out into the night sky to think of how he wanted to word the next part of his confession, “ The thing is that…well… I don’t really care about all that political nonsense. I don’t really mind muggleborns or muggles really for that matter. If I were to take the mark it wouldn’t be for any belief in their cause but just because my father wanted me to,” Draco hardened his graze at Potter for a second, “make no mistake about it though. If I were to turn down the Mark it would mean my life. I would have to leave, run, really make myself disappear until the war was over if I wanted to survive. I don’t really fancy any of the option I have, but graduation is coming up in a week. What do you think I should do?”

Harry was speechless really. He couldn’t believe this was Malfoy he was speaking to. If he ever told anyone the conversation that he was having, Harry was sure no one would believe him even if he showed them a pensieve memory. “Merlin, Malfoy, your really asking me for advice on something that would determine your whole life?”

Draco smirked slightly, “Yes, in fact I am. I’d like to know what you think I should do.”

“That a rather difficult question.”

Draco’s face turned expressionless, “Is it really? I would have thought for sure that you would spout some goody-goody nonsense about good and evil and be on your merry way.”

Harry was thoughtful for a moment. That would be what a Gryffindor would do but he was also Slytherin and a decision like this is something he would make with his head not his heart. He had many conversations with himself about what made someone good or evil; if people could really be defined by such simple words? He decided that it’s never that easy. “If I was a normal Gryffindor, I wouldn’t doubt that that would be something that would be said, but I’m not. I’ll let you in on a little secret.”

Draco raised an eyebrow and gave a full Malfoy smirk. “Harry Potter sharing a little secret with me,” Draco gave a chuckle, “do tell.”

Harry couldn’t help but laugh, “Truthfully, I should really be in Slytherin. That is where the Sorting Hat wanted to place me. It said I could be great in Slytherin. I begged it to place me in Gryffindor after all I had just made my second friend ever in Ronald Weasley and I didn’t want to let that go yet. After a bit of argument it placed me where I wanted to go; didn’t everyone wonder why it took me so long to be placed?”

Draco couldn’t believe what he had just heard. Harry Potter in Slytherin, they would have eaten him alive. “It’s a good thing you did. You wouldn’t have lived long if you were placed there.”

Harry smiled. “I don’t know, sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if I had went ahead with what the sorting hat wanted. I even wonder sometimes what would have happened if I had taken your hand in friendship or if I could have been friends with both you and Ron. I wondered about a lot of things that has happened in my life.”

Draco was surprised to hear that Potter had ever given a second thought about having turned down his friendship. After all it had really been hurt pride that had begun his animosity for Potter, and then it was jealousy for doing all the right things and being almost perfect, most of all for beating him in so many ways. Quietly, Draco asked him a question that had bothered him since he was eleven, “Why did you turn me down?”

Harry looked at Draco with piercing eyes wondering whether he should answer that question. It wouldn’t do to reveal too much of himself to Malfoy. It couldn’t really hurt to tell him though would it? “Do you really want to know?”

Draco looked Potter in the eye and nodded.

“Do you remember the first time we met?” Harry asked wistfully.

“How could I forget? On the train when you turned me down.” Draco asked sneeringly.

Harry shook his head, “No it wasn’t.”

Draco looked confused. He didn’t remember meeting Potter before the train. “I don’t remember ever meeting you before then.”

Harry laughed, “You forgot.”

Draco gave him an annoyed look, “Well obviously if I say I can’t remember.”

“I suppose you don’t remember being fitted for school robes at Madame Malkin’s Dress shop meeting a messy haired boy in ill fitting cloths standing in a stool next to you getting fitted also while you spouted, nonstop might I add, about being a Malfoy and being pure-blood and filthy rich. I don’t think I got a word edgewise. Not that I would have known what to say anyways since I had just found out I was a wizard to begin with.” Harry smiled mirthfully seeing the light dawn on Malfoy’s face.

Draco Malfoy couldn’t believe it. He remembered that day. He had wanted to impress the little boy that he had thought was adorable looking as soon as he set eyes on him. In his need to impress he had indeed spouted many things about being rich, pure-blood, and a Malfoy. He had wanted the boy to like him as equally as he had liked the boy. So he repeat a lot of the things that he had heard his father say that seemed to impress people. Oh my, this was turning out to be some night. “That boy… that was you?”

Harry smiled thinking back to that moment, “I admit that at the time I thought you a bit arrogant but I was willing to give you a chance because I saw something in you that made me think you were worth it. Obviously, you had been taught to say the right things to make people take notice of you. Unfortunately I had no idea about most of what you said at the time, but I wanted to get to know the real you. You intrigued me really.”

There was a sort of uncomfortable silence when Harry realized what he had revealed. It was something that he had kept to himself for a long time. Draco couldn’t take in all that had just been said to him. Harry Potter had been intrigued by him. “Why didn’t you?” Draco asked solemnly.

Harry didn’t really want to say anymore about it but in a week he probably wouldn’t ever see Draco Malfoy again so what did it matter now. “I was going to. I knew you would find me on the train, you know, once you heard about Harry Potter. But when the whole thing with Ron and you went down, I guess I was disappointed in you for the cruelty of your words. The way you said the things you did hurt me as much as it had angered Ron. By the time I wanted to talk to you again it really was too late. So I just let it go and moved forward.”

Again a depressive silence, also it was getting ridiculously late. Harry stood up to go to let Malfoy take in everything they had said to one another. Before he went though, just in case they never spoke to each other again the way they did this night, Harry wanted him to know a few things. “The decision you have to make is a hard one. Lucius Malfoy even though he is not a good person he is still your father and yes any child would want their father to be proud of them. If you think you need to take the Dark Mark to stay alive then do it. The mark doesn’t make a person evil, it’s a choice that you make, but then again you need to know that you will be asked by Voldermort to hurt and humiliate others in order to prove your loyalty. Also, keep in mind that you will have to face, maybe even kill, students and teachers that you have known and worked with the last seven years at Hogwarts in order to make you father happy. If you think your father being proud of you for that is worth it then do what you need to do.” Harry took a deep breath to say the rest of what he needed to say, “Personally, if you can’t choose I would rather you weren’t involved in the war at all. You still have time to walk away from what promises to be a deadly and horrifying war. I don’t have a choice and if I did I wouldn’t want to have a part in what is coming.” Harry contemplated telling him the rest of what he wanted to say. Harry was taking a chance here. “Draco, look at me.”

Draco was so startled to hear his name come out of Potter’s mouth that he obeyed immediately, staring straight into expressive emerald eyes.

“I’m sorry that I didn’t get to know the person that you have become. You still have that something that made me notice you the first time we met. I’m sorry that I didn’t try harder to be your friend. I think we could have been really good for each other and I think, even as rivals we still were. Do what you think is best. I hope I don’t see you on the battlefield though. Also if you ever have any doubts, don’t. You’re very much worth everything.” Harry left without another word out of the Astronomy Tower.

*End Flashback*

“Come to say goodbye, Potter”

Harry turned around slowly to face his hearts desire, one Draco Malfoy and smiled. “Yea… something like that. You?”

Draco walked self assuredly to stand next to Harry. “I came to see you.”
