Chapter 2: Walking the Line

Duplicity of Friendship-
Chapter 2: Walking the Line

On their way back to Gryffindor House both Harry and Hermione were quiet. Professor Snape and Narcissa Malfoy’s conversation gave both teenagers a lot to digest. The walk between Professor Snape’s quarters and Gryffindor House seemed to be the longest in Harry’s life.
The thought of his mother being called Thomas Riddle’s “little princess” upset Harry beyond belief. His mother represented all that was good and pure. She was a muggleborn, so the whole concept made no sense at all. He had many questions to ask Dumbledore, but somehow he did not think Dumbledore would tell him the truth. Could he be related to Lord Voldermort? Was that the reason Voldermort wanted him dead? There were so many questions…and no one was willing to answer the them.
Narcissa Malfoy and Professor Severus Snape appeared at ease with discussing his mother, Alice Longbottom, and Andromenda Tonks. They were all supposed to hate each other, not to have fond memories of thinking up ways to assassinate Bellatrix LeStrange. His Mum would never participate in something like that. And she didn’t associate with the likes of Severus Snape and Narcissa Malfoy... or did she? He was starting to rethink a lot of things.
The lines between who to believe and who not to believe were blurred. That in turn misaligned who exactly was good and who was bad. Harry remembered the memory from Snape’s pensieve. He remembered that hisfather was most definitely not a saint, just young guy who needed a direction. Now his mother was someone that everyone seemed to know very little about. When Harry actually thought about it, no one told him anything specifically about his mother. Not his aunt, nor Dumbledore, nor Sirus, nor Remus…it was like she was this great unknown. The conversation he just heard was the first direct information that he had received about the woman who had died for him. The conversation in question involved two of the most unlikely people possible.
For once Harry was incredibly jealous of Draco Malfoy. His mother was live and she loved him. She embodied everything that Harry hoped that is mother had felt for him. Listening to her talk to Snape about her lans for Draco just ripped out his heart. He felt robbed of her. That one reason caused an eruption of hate for Voldermort and Dumbledore to ripple through him. He felt like a pawn!
While Harry was lost in his thoughts, the wheels in Hermione’s mind
whirled quickly. Professor Snape and Mrs. Malfoy’s conversation opened as many doors as it closed regarding Snape’s past. Particularly when it came to Snape’s relationship with Harry’s Mum. From what Hermione saw of Mrs. Malfoy she definitely liked her. This said a lot considering the woman spawned Draco Malfoy. One wonders where Narcissa went wrong on raising that one. She would have to ask Tonks about Narcissa when she got that chance.
Hermione refocused her thoughts to Snape. She had always wondered what contributed to his highly evolved and defensive personality. Amazing Narcissa pierced his shell and he relaxed around her. Hermione wondered if he acted the same way around Lily Evans Potter. She knew Harry and Snape’s rocky relationship would be none the worse for wear after this turn of events.

Frankly, she believed the man had a death wish of some sort. There was no way that Professor Snape was looking after Harry because of some plain old wizard’s debt involving James Potter. After overhearing that conversation she was fairly certain that Severus Snape and Lily Evans were on more friendly terms than either Remus Lupin or Sirus Black had admitted to Harry. The next question was how friendly was friendly.

It was obvious that Professor Snape and Mrs. Malfoy had a previous relationship. Hermione snickered to herself, “So Narcissa preferred Severus Snape to Lucius Malfoy as Draco’s father. Evidently things are not that great at the old “Pureblood Manor”. Makes one wonder if Snape delivered the goods himself.”

“Too bad, we don’t get along with Draco. This would be an excellent opportunity to exchange information. I wonder if he knows about the Professor and his Mum. If so, I wonder how he feels about it?, “ she mused.

By the time the pair reached the portrait of the Fat Lady, Harry Stopped Hermione by putting his hand on her shoulder and said, “Can we keep what we just saw between ourselves for awhile. I’m not sure how I feel about what I heard tonight.”

“Okay,” Hermione, said slowly, “But, I would like to check out that place Narcissa Malfoy mentioned, the OUBLIETTE.”

“Fine,” Harry held his breath and relented, “Just don’t mention the other stuff to anyone, yet,...not even Ron”

“What are you afraid of finding out? That you may be related to Voldermort? Which doesn’t have to mean anything! Your mother was a real person and not an extension of your father, or Tom Riddle, or of Dumbledore, or even of you. No one who exists in this world is perfect, no matter what anyone says. She made mistakes and she tried to rectify them,” blasted Hermione.

Hermione noticed that Harry was taking this whole situation badly. Perhaps a different approach was needed. “Maybe you should try atually talking to Professor Snape and learn more about your mother. He might be willing to talk, you never know. You both need to put some baggage aside not just for the sake of the war, but personally too,” she suggested.

Harry leaned against a wall and placed his hand over his eyes. “I will think about it,” he murmured.

“Good,” she smiled.

“That’s progress”, she thought.

They hugged and bid each other good night.

Harry went straight to bed and fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He dreamed of his mother that night. All she did was sing lullabies. He really didn\'t understand what she was singing. But he heard the sound of her voice and it soothed his raw feelings. It was one of the best nights of sleep he had in a long while.

On Hermione’s way up to her room she noticed that Ginny’s bed was empty.

“Maybe she’s in the loo,” she thought as she prepared for bed.

It took Hermione a while to get to sleep.

“Tonight’s events had changed things. Yes, things would definitely be different,” she thought before she fell asleep.

Notes:
Yes, Ginny is up to something! So wait a little longer I have something planned. Right now my poor beta is churning out the chapters I have given him to edit….
Lily will show up in chapter 6 or 7….
