Blood and Eagles
Disclaimer:They're not mine... and I promise to put them back in the toybox when I'm done playing. All I own is a cat and a computer. Taking either would be useless unless you enjoy KFC-smelling kitty farts or a smoking heap of metal and plastic. So please dont sue me.
Chapter 2
Repressing a shudder at the site of the meter high raptor perched on the back of his dormitory chair, Draco tried not to wince as three-inch long talons created splintering craters in the polished ebony wood. Just the sight of Thanatos*, his father’s Harpy eagle** was enough to send even the hottest-blooded teenage boy’s balls clear up into his body. ‘At least I know Father’s not angry with me this time . . ‘
As Thanatos had entered the pale blonde’s bedroom, he had only received a “gentle” cuff from one of the bird’s four foot long wings instead of last time, when she’d landed upon his shoulder. That time, it’d been his body those claws had dug in to.
Draco ran a hand instinctively over his right collar; had Crabbe and Goyle not run screaming in fear at the site of the double-crested bird seemingly (and indeed she could have) killing Draco, he’d likely have lost a lot more than blood. He'd spent an entire week in the hospital wing thanks to his father's bird, and he didn't wish to repeat the experience any time soon.
Doing his best not to look the Harpy in the eye, he tentatively reached forward, removing the forest green envelope from it’s sheath about her leg. ‘Please don’t bite me, please don’t bite me you bloody bird, you ugly hippogriff’s misbegotten slime of a mudbloo-’ His thoughts were rudely cut off as Thanatos’ sabled beak snapped a warning across the back of his neck.
‘I wonder if the dumb-’ a welling of red sprang up, and he shivered as the blood slowly made it's way into the high collar of his robes. ‘great, beautiful, awe-inspiring joy of my father’s can tell what I’m thinking...’ His only response was the foreboding rustle as she ruffled the obsidian feathers of her back and wings. From the moment his trembling fingers grasped around the parchment reflexively, silver script began marching it’s elegant way across the emerald-dusted paper.
“Draco,
The Dark Lord is very pleased with your progress this past summer and during your first term this year. I too find myself almost pleased with your conduct.
Draco’s cheeks flushed slightly with pleasure at the praise; seldom was Lucius pleased with -anything- let
alone his heir.
The Lord wishes for the plan to commence this weekend; he has already put out the owl to the youngest Weasely,
and they will be in Hogsmead. You know what to do. Do not disappoint me boy, or you will not live to regret it.
Lucius
With an undignified squeak, Draco dropped the parchment to the thick, jade carpet as the entire scroll burst into flames. He peered through wide, silvery eyes as Thanatos spread her wings; her launch was too much for the already strained chair, and it splintered beneath her.
Her loud cry reverberated in Draco’s skull as, seemingly out of spite, the large raptor flung out a claw as she flew by, raking the young man’s face from pointed chin to perfectly parted hair. Tucking her eight-foot wingspan to her sleek black body, she shot through the still wide open window, disappearing into the star speckled heavens.
Cowering, Draco sank to his knees, and from there to the floor, lanky arms clenched around his trembling legs. It was there that he woke, several hours later to a growling stomach and annoying itch of dried blood.

Authors Notes:
* Thanatos is greek for "Death." Being fascinated with greek mythology, I couldn't resist. Also, being Lucius' bird, it seemed quite appropriate. I once had a bird named Thanatos... the bugger was an evil little git, to be sure!
** Yes, the Harpy Eagle is a real bird, not something I've made up. It's found in Central and South America, and is an endangered species (there's about 30 confirmed nesting sites in the world). The measurements I give are in fact realistic; an adult female harpy eagle can reach about 1 meter in height, and can indeed have an impressive wingspan of up to 8 feet. A harpy's talons can also be relativly compaired to those of a North American Grizzley bear, though the harpy's are longer. (I don't know about you, but I'd not want them digging into MY collar bone, thanks very much!)
Feather-wise, Harpys are typically grey or black on the back and wings, with a white underbelly. They also posess a unique double crest about their heads, lmaking them look remarkably like the greek myth of Harpy women, half bird, half dirty, disgusting, foul-mouthed female; which of course, is where they got their names.
Can you tell it's my favorite bird? I hope to someday either volunteer at or start a rehabilitation and breeding program such as TPF ("the peregrin fund") for the re-introduction of Harpys to the wild. High dreams, I know... but something I've thought about doing since the day I became a volunteer at our local raptor rehab center.

Well, there's chapter two... short, I know, but seeing as we switched viewpoints here, I figured it might be time to end the chapter. Isn't Lucius just a vile bastard? He's almost worse then old Voldy himself! Anyway, hope the info on harpys was helpful... and I hope you liked the chapter! I'm not as satisfied with it as I am the first, but that's ok.
Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
PS: Sorry for the semi-cliffy... ok, no I'm not sorry. But I still hope you enjoyed!
[edit] Thanks to DKR for pointing out a typo I made in my notes... I'd ment to say Harpys can reach one meter. I got tangled up somewhere between "one meter" and "3 feet!" Thanks, Alex![/edit]
