Chapter2
People at the Bookstore
School was to start at Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry in two days and Diagon Alley was bustling with student and parents getting supplies and necessities for the coming year. Three Hogwarts students huddled at the entrance to Flourish and Blots bookstore looking over their book lists.
Ron, a boy with bright red hair now stands a good 5 inches taller than the other two he’s with. He looks over the shoulder of a bushy brown haired girl pretending that he’s looking at the book list when actually he’s checking out her much fuller chest. Hermione hadn’t really changed that much physically, except that is for her chest, which grew quite a bit too big for her own liking. She tried to hide it with layers of clothes but it didn’t do much good. Harry was with them as well and had himself grown over the summer. Not so much taller than broader at the shoulders and with a well-defined torso. He still sported his messy mop of black hair and bright green eyes.
“Come on lets get our books. Then we can go to the pub for some butterbeer.” Hermione said as she turned to enter the bookstore. Harry and Ron followed. They headed for the 6th year section where there were plenty of familiar faces to be seen. Seamus Finnegan and Dean Thomas were talking to a boy about as tall as Ron and as muscular as Harry.
“Neville!?” Hermione blurted. Not believing her eyes. “I didn’t even recognize you! Look at how tall you are!” She gaped, giving him a friendly smile. He blushed and shuffled his feet. Harry and Ron came up behind her with surprised looks on their faces that matched Hermiones.
“Yeah, Gram thought I had put stretching spell on myself. But I didn’t! Honest!” Neville said to them. “I also spent most of the summer at my great uncles magical plant nursery. Thought I was going to learn a lot of new things about magical plants but all he did was put me to work. And I tell ya, I’ve slung enough dragon manure to last me a life time!”
“Well the girls are going to be all over you Nev!” Ron said giving him a slap on the shoulder making Neville blush further. “You think?” He looked up questioningly. Everyone laughed. Neville didn’t notice that Ron’s hand lingered at his shoulder just a second or two longer than was really necessary.
“I am going to get my books. I’ll meet you up front.” Hermione left the boys to search out her Arithmacy book. She bumped into a few people as she squeezes through the crowd. She found the aisle she needed and it was packed. Finally few people filed out so she could make her way in.
* Lets see…. Arithmacy…Arithmacy…Ah here it is. * Hermione reached her hand up to get one of the books but instead grabbed someone else’s hand.
“Oh! Sorry!” Hermione said pulling her hand back quickly and looked beside her to see the owner of the hand. Her gaze met a pair of golden eyes, not brown but gold. Hermione gasped. She had never seen eyes that color. The girl beside her is about the same age as herself with straight brown shiny hair.
“Oh. Excuse me.” The girl said then looked back to Hermione. “I just nene one of these books.” She gestured to the bookshelf. Hermione grabbed one of the arithmacy books down showing the girl the title at the spine.
“Are you sure you need this book? It’s advanced arithmacy.”
The girl looked at a piece of paper held in her hand, which Hermione noticed was indeed from Hogwarts.
“Yes, it says here ‘6th grade advanced arithmacy by Uniden and Brite’” The girls finger traced the line as she read it aloud.
“Well, this is it.” Said Hermione in a questioning tone and handed it to her. “Sorry, I just don’t recognize you from school.” Hermione’s brow furrowed trying to place the girl but she smiled at her and she smiled back.
“I’m new-….” The girl was interrupted.
“Miss Adrick, dear, have you gathered your books?” Narcissa Malfoy stood at the end of the aisle. Hermione noticed that the girl stiffened at hearing her name.
“Yes, Mrs. Malfoy.” Said the girl. She bowed her head and went to join the woman. Narcissa looked down her small perfect nose at Hermione, glancing over her as if seeing something vulgar and walked off with the girl in toe.
Hermione grabbed an arithmacy book, gathered up the remaining books on her list and found Ginny, Mrs. Weasly, Ron and Harry in line. She couldn’t wait to tell them about the new student she just met. But before she could open her mouth Ron shouted in disgust.
“Did you pick up the book for Care of Magical Creatures?! Bloody book looks like a fairy puked all over it!” He held up a pink furry book by its corner like it might burn him. It rained pink opalescent glitter and reeked of flower perfume. He scrunched he nose in revulsion. “Don’t know what Hagrids thinking!” Everyone shrugged.
“Harry. Ron. I think I just met a new student.” Hermione whispered to them over the noise.
“The whole bloody stores full of first years how could you not?” Ron said looking at all the wide eyes young kids.
“No, no. She’s our age – there she is.” Hermione pointed discreetly to the girl who stood with Narcissa and Draco Malfoy just outside the door. The girls’ back was to them and they could only see her brown hair.
“How do you know?” Ron asked
“I was getting one of my books and I met her in the aisle. We’ll be in the same arithmacy class together.”
“What’s her name?” Harry asked
“Don’t know we didn’t get to introductions before Malfoys’ Mother came along and fetched her like she was some kind of dog or something. The girls seemed scared.”
“Well wouldn’t you be with a relative like that?” Ron snorted.
“I don’t know Ron I don’t think they are related.” Hermione said as she closed the gap between herself and Mrs. Weasley who had moved up in the line.
“And how do you know that. Some sort of sixth sense?” Ron snorted again and elbowed Harry. Harry just smile knowing Hermione was almost always right and didn’t know why Ron was giving her such a hard time about it. He went back to looking at his new Defense Against the Dark Arts book. It looked promising.
Hermione just shrugged and went to pay for her things.
