Draco meandered aimlessly through the grounds, picking at leaves and twigs, twisting them between his fingers. He had just received an owl from his father that he was to get his Dark Mark soon. Though it had never crossed his mind to question it before, the thought suddenly disgusted him. He didn’t want to be branded with that lunatic’s stigmata.

A flash of color caught his eye and he looked at the object lying on the ground. A phoenix feather. Is that supposed to be a sign? How cliché, he thought. Still, he picked up the plume and tucked into his robes.

His feet eventually led him to the chambers of his Head of House. After only 1 ½ knocks, Severus Snape opened the door and eyed his student. Stepping aside, he ushered Draco to a chair.

Draco sat heavily and the words tumbled from his mouth. “Sir, you know I am to receive the Dark Mark soon. I do not wish it. I don’t give a damn about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named or his vision for the wizardiorldorld. I know that I could be endangering myself speaking to you, as you yourself are a Death Eater, but I want you to tell me how to get out of this.”

Professor Snape stared thoughtfully into the fire for several moments before turning back to the Slytherin. “Mr. Malfoy, are you merely not interested in the Dark Lord’s plans or do you perhaps oppose them?” Upon seeing Draco’s hesitation to answer, he continued, “I will not turn you in, no matter what you say. You can be rest assured that you are safe here.”

Draco visibly swallowed and appeared to be concentrating as he spoke. “Well, sir, I have been thinking a lot about this since I received word from my father. I have no use for mudbloods; I would rather see a pureblood wizarding world. However, I do not believe genocide is the solution. I’m not willing to voluntarily partake in the murder of innocent pe, ne, no matter how below me they are.”

“You are simply not interested in his solution then?”

“No, sir. I don’t know. It’s disgusting, isn’t it? Killing all those people? For no reason other than to cleanse our world? And what about the muggles who don’t even know about our world? What the hell were their deaths for? I suppose…yes, I suppose that I am against that. It just doesn’t seem right.”

With a nod, Professor Snape stood and walked to the mantel. “Draco, you are either very brave or very foolish telling me these things. You know that Death Eaters are not honest. I could easily have lied to you and now turn you over to the Dark Lord,” he paused and took some secret pleasure in Draco’s blanching. “But, if you truly mean what you say, and I believe you do, then I will tell you something that you could do to sabotage the Dark Lord’s plans. Have you ever heard of the Order of the Phoenix, Draco?”

Draco snorted, pulling the phoenix feather from his robes. “So I guess this really was Merlin’s sorry idea of a sign then, wasn’t it?”

owinowing look crossed Snape’s features. “There are spies for the Order, Mr. Malfoy. And you, if you are so inclined, could become one as well. Do not think for a moment that this is a game. It is very serious, very dangerous work. You will be told nothing about the Order except for what we feed you. You will only be able to get to headquarters if someone takes you. If you are captured, you will be tortured and beaten within an inch of your life, perhaps killed. You must think this through carefully before you make a decision. You must make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. For yourself.”

They talked back and forth for a few more minutes before Draco found himself wandering the corridors of Hogwarts, weighing his options in his mind. If he simply disappeared, both sides would be looking for him. If he were a spy, it was possible that no one would suspect him. And hard as it was to believe, he did have a conscience. Coue jue just sit back and not do anything about people dying?

Decision made, he retraced his steps to Professor Snape’s chambers. Rounding a corner, he collided with a solid mass. Looking up from his position on the ground, he eyed Potter warily. Brushing himself off as he stood, he mumbled, “wanker” and continued on his way. He couldn’t know that Harry Potter had remained staring after him long after he had disappeared.
