Chapter 2 Conversation

“She left me! YOU left me over there!” snapped Tuardae, making Dumbledore who frowned at her. They’d been able to talk so far without tempers flaring up. Apparently the topic of Avari leaving Tuardae in America hit a sore chord. After figuring that Tuardae would not calm down, or stop itching to hit Avari, while the black haired girl was in the room, Dumbledore sent Avari back to her room in the Slytherin dungeons.

“My dear,” Dumbledore said, watching Tuardae visibly relax now that Avari had left his office, “What is your name?”

“Tuardae,” she said, and stopped. Upon Dumbledore waiting she finally gave in her last name, “Tuardae T’lageos.”

Dumbledore raised an eyebrow. “It’s my last name. It always has been, Avari is adopted into my family. Her parents fought He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named’s followers and died. The Aurors here in Europe had a hard time tracking down a full-blooded elven family. And after that, it was a short list who would take care of a dark elf. They’re all rumored to be born servants of the Dark Lord. My mother and father thought differently, and took Avari in, and gave her our name. She is my sister,” she said with a sniffle.

Dumbledore nodded. “Do your parents know that you are here?”

“They know that I protect Avari, and that I’m smart enough not to get myself in trouble,” she said, raising her chin high. After a minute of Dumbledore staring her down she sunk back into the chair. “No, they don’t. I was going to send them an owl when I found Avari and we were returning home. But she won’t return home will she?” The last was said with a hopefully sad look at the headmaster, who shook his head. Her lower lip trembled.

With a half smile Dumbledore stood up. “I’m sure if the Lord and Lady received another letter from me they would be willing to let you stay. I am, after all, a friend of the family,” he said, eyes twinkling.

Standing before Tuardae he grinned as she stared at him, her visage pondering seriously before turning shocked as he pulled a gold Galleon out from behind her ear. “Uncle Albus?!” she said, shocked. “But we haven’t seen you in almost-“

“Ten years,” he said sadly. “And I’m sorry for it. Once the fighting with Voldemort truly began it was hard for me to go to America. But I hear your parents are doing fine running the Alliance of Races of America. Hence the reason Fernland has developed so much. I must say, it is a school that could rival Hogwarts.”

“Does Avari know?” Tuardae thought for a moment. “She only met you twice, and both times she was pining desperately for her parents.”

Dumbledore grinned, “Yes, she knows. Which is why your parents already sent a letter saying Avari could continue her studies here. I’ve already had Professor McGonagall send a letter to your parents. We should receive word in a day or two. Until then, would you like to take classes with Avari?”

He sent off for Filch, while he and Tuardae chatted quietly about Fernland and her classes. When Filch arrived Tuardae smiled and wished her “Uncle Albus” a goodnight, getting a shocked look from the caretaker. Dumbledore smiled and politely reminded his new student that she must refer to him as “Headmaster” around the other students. With a giggle and a nod.

Tuardae nodded and Dumbledore sent her off with Filch, who was told to find her a room for the night. While Filch grumbled and Tuardae snickered at him down the hallway Dumbledore sat at his desk, his fingers steepled as he stared at the portraits, all who were whispering quietly amongst themselves.
