Ch 2 - Cigarettes and Alcohol
CHAPTER TWO CIGARETTES AND ALCOHOL
See Chapter one for disclaimer.
Is it my imagination
or have I finally found something worth living for?
I was looking for some action
But all I found was cigarettes and alcohol
You could wait for a lifetime
To spend your days in the sunshine
You might as well do the white line
Cos when it comes on top . . .
You gotta make it happen
Cigarettes and Alcohol
They walked through the town in relative silence, until they came to a small, run down bar. A flickering neon sign announced that the dive was called Murphy's. Faith turned to Sirius and gestured to his robes.
"Take them off," she said in a serious voice. "Not many people around here know that I'm a slayer. I like it like that but if I walk in there with you looking like that, they're going to know that's something's up. So, off."
"And what happens if I'm naked under them?" asked Sirius, with a small grin. He was starting to like this woman and wanted to see if he could embarrass her.
"Well baby, if you're naked under there then I'm in for a better night than I thought," she replied with a wink, folding her arms and watching him expectantly.
He had not expected such a forward reply and it took him a little by surprise, although he found that the appeal of having a drink was mostly due to the woman in front of him.
He made a big show of pulling off his robes, only to show her that he was in fact dressed in blue jeans and a black t-shirt. He always wore muggle clothes when he was at Grimmauld Place and he had left there in such a hurry to go after Harry that he had not had time to change.
"Not bad," she said looking him up and down. "I'm a bit disappointed that you're fully dressed, but the night is still young," she said smirking over her shoulder as she walked into the bar.
He watched her for a moment, stunned, and then, with a quick look around to make sure there was no one watching, he pulled out his wand and transfigured his robes into a grey leather jacket, which he slung over his shoulder as he followed Faith into the bar.
The bar was as dingy inside as it was out, and Sirius squinted through the smoky air, spotting Faith waving a greeting to an old balding man behind the bar, pointing to a corner booth and holding up two fingers. The old man winked and nodded, as Sirius made his way to her side.
They slid into the booth facing each other and Faith pulled out her cigarettes and lit one as the old man came over and put a bottle of Jack Daniels and two glasses down. "Thanks Eddie," she said and he patted her on the shoulder as he walked away.
"Can I?" asked Sirius, pointing to the pack
"Knock yourself out," she replied, spinning the top off of the bottle and pouring them both a generous shot. Sirius lit his cigarette and took a deep drag of it as Faith raised her glass. "Cheers," she said as they clinked glasses.
"Cheers," said Sirius downing his drink in one.
"Okay, Sirius, you said you had a tale to tell. I'm listening."
Sirius looked out across the bar. How much should he tell her? The fact that there was a wizarding world did not seem to have fazed her at all, but then as a slayer she must have seen all sorts of extraordinary things. He did not know where to start, so he decided to tell her everything. Almost.
He told her about growing up in the Black house and how he had run away. He told her about Hogwarts and the Marauders and Lily. He told her about Harry, his godson, and how he had survived the curse from Voldemort that had killed his parents. Finally he told her that Voldemort had returned, about the war that was brewing and about how he had ended up in the department of mysteries and falling through the veil. When she asked him why Harry had gone to live with the Dursleys after James and Lily's death, he paused.
"I was away a lot, and it wasn't possible for me to have Harry with me," was all he said and his tone of voice told her not to push the subject.
Faith had been able to sit back and get a good look at him while he was telling his story and was surprised with what she saw.
She guessed he was in his late thirties but he had the look of someone who had been through a terrible ordeal and had not quite recovered from it. His body was very lean, almost as though he had been starved at some point. But she imagined that he had been quite a heartthrob in his younger days, with his strong jaw and high cheekbones. He was very tall, about 6"3', and was broad shouldered, leading down to a narrow waist and long legs. She found herself becoming mesmerised by his voice as he spoke. Deep and gravely as though he was not used to using it that much. But it was his eyes that held her attention. They were grey but obviously changed with his mood as, when he spoke of James and Lily they were a light dove grey, yet when he spoke of Voldemort, they became dark and stormy, like slate. That combined with his thick black hair, which fell in waves just past his ears was having a strange effect on her, and she felt herself shiver a tiny bit.
"That's about it," he said, draining his glass.
"What, no wife, girlfriend, boyfriend?" she asked in a teasing voice. She had never been one for subtlety and saw no reason to start now.
He laughed at her forthrightness. "No, none of those," he said, "I'm not really a relationship kind of bloke, I like to play the field, keep my options open." He did not tell her that it had been about fourteen years since he had last played the field with a woman and really had no idea of what it was like to have a relationship with one, although he always secretly hoped he would get the chance one day. "And besides," he said with a grin, "I've never met a woman who could keep up with me."
Faith smiled, she had always loved a challenge.
Sirius grabbed another cigarette from her packet and lit it. "What about you then Faith, I don't suppose the slayer has time for romance?"
Faith snorted, "Romance? You've got to be kidding me. Get some, get gone. That's my motto," she said with a smirk, "I don't believe in romance or relationships, they don't get you anywhere, and besides the only person you can rely on in this life is yourself." For a minute she had almost believed herself.
"Good for you," he said unconvincingly. "So, tell my about life as a Slayer then Faith. I mean, I've heard the tales but I thought they were just that, tales, and how is it that there are more than one, I mean the story used to be something like "˜Into each generation a Slayer is born, one girl in all the world, born with the strength and skill"¦"
"Holy shit!" said Faith, "How the hell do you know that old yarn? I thought that was just a Watcher's way of making you feel guilty and responsible."
"Believe it or not we learned it at school," said Sirius, smiling at the incredulous look on her face, "but like I said, we thought it was just a story. Anyway, you were going to tell me your story, good triumphing over evil and saving the day."
She looked down into her glass, trying to think of how to tell a story that sounded like that, without coming across as the villain. When she finally looked up, she saw that he was staring at her intently, his dark eyes seeming to see right through her and making her breath catch in her throat.
"˜He thinks I'm a good Slayer, like Buffy,' she thought to herself. She could not bear to tell him the truth. She did not know why, but she did not want this man, this stranger to think badly of her. She thought that if he knew what was in her past, he would treat her they way that everyone else had done. Like she was a rabid dog with a muzzle on. As it was, he was treating her like a friend, no, more than that, like a date, with a clean slate, and she found that she liked it that way.
She decided to tell him the edited version. She told him of her childhood in Boston, being raised by her mother, she told him about Buffy, how she had died momentarily, calling Kendra and how Kendra had died, calling herself. She told him the alligator story, his eyes widened and he laughed out loud. She told him how she and Buffy had called themselves the chosen two. She did not tell him about Deputy Mayor Finch or Mayor Wilkins, or the coma Buffy put her into for changing sides. She told him that she had gone to Los Angeles to help Angel. She left out the parts where she killed a man and what she had done to Wesley, feeling her stomach turn at the thought of it, and she did not tell him that she had been in prison for two years then had escaped. She finished her story with the potentials, the first, the scythe and burying the hellmouth and ultimately Sunnydale.
Sirius watched her, entranced. She wasn't very tall, only about 5"5' with an hourglass figure which hid the toned muscles of a fighter. She had thick, wavy, chestnut brown hair, which cascaded over her shoulders and halfway down her back. Her large chocolate brown eyes sparkled as she told her tales, crinkling at the corners when she laughed. She had a husky voice that got higher when she was trying to make a point. When she smiled it lit up her face and he saw that she had dimples in her cheeks that gave her a mischievous quality, causing his chest to tighten and his jeans to do the same.
Sirius cleared his throat. "That's some life you lead Faith," he said, tipping the bottle upside down and looking disappointed when nothing came out.
"Sure is," she replied, with a sigh, "but yours is pretty impressive too."
He shrugged.
"What are you going to do now?" she asked.
"Well I need to get back to England and find Harry, so I'll just have to apparate back I suppose."
"Huh?" said Faith
"Oh sorry, transfer myself from one place to another in the blink of an eye."
"Yeah?" said Faith looking slightly impressed.
He nodded.
"Hell, I could do with a skill like that," she said standing. "You about ready to motor, only it's nearly sunrise and I need to get some shuteye."
"Ready when you are slayer," he said standing and following her through the deserted bar. As she walked over and settled up with Eddie, Sirius stepped outside and looked up as the obsidian sky was slowly being torn apart by thick ribbons of pink and gold daylight.
Faith stepped out behind him. "Well Sirius, we didn't quite make it far enough to have been a pleasure," she said with a wink, "but it was nice to meet you." She found to her surprise that she meant it. There had been very few people in her life that she had genuinely liked, but for some strange reason she really liked this man, not just in a sexual way, and a small part of her did not want him to go quite so soon, but she said nothing.
"You too Faith, thanks for the booze and fags, I owe you one." He was torn between wanting to get back to Harry and wanting to get to know Faith better. He knew he had to go back, to his world, to Harry. But he was sick of being treated like a prisoner in his own house, not allowed to do anything or go anywhere, and here was this woman, a slayer no less, who had taken him at face value and did not treat him like a naughty child or a criminal. Admittedly, she did not know that he was one, but it still felt nice. No, he definitely didn't want to go.
"Goodbye Faith," he said, gripping his wand inside his jacket pocket and closing his eyes, picturing the ministry of magic. After a couple of minutes he heard Faith say.
"Umm, Sirius?"
He opened his eyes, focusing on her face. "It didn't work," he said in confusion. He tried it again. He knew he should not be apparating as the ministry was probably swarming with Aurors by now, but he had to get to Harry. He tried one more time. Nothing.
"Okay," said Faith, "enough. There's obviously something wrong with your magical mojo Sirius, and you can't just stand here all day trying. Come back with me, get a little sleep and we'll figure this out later on. The creepy veil thing probably sucked a bit more energy out of you than you thought is all."
Sirius looked around him, defeated. Now Faith had mentioned it, he felt exhausted.
"Fine," he said quietly, "thanks Faith." He followed her down the street to a small motel. They walked past a row of doors until they came to the last one. She took a key out of her pocket and opened the door.
"Home sweet home," she said as they walked in and she locked and bolted the door. "Make yourself comfortable, I gotta use the bathroom." She told him as she went through a door off to the side of the room.
Sirius sat on the edge of the double bed and looked around him, it was a small, basic room and as well as the bed there was a chair, phone, television and a small kitchenette. He could not believe that a warrior for the light was living somewhere like this. He lay back on the bed and closed his eyes thinking that this had to be his strangest day ever, and he had had some strange ones.
Faith came out of the bathroom in a vest and panties and looked down at the sleeping man on her bed. "Well," she said with a smile as she climbed onto the bed and lay next to him. "I guess there are worse ways to end the day."
