Snape sat still for a moment, his face as impassive as ever. His mind was whizzing a mile a minute, though, as he sifted through his mental database, but to no avail. He had no clue what a web site was. Snape finally gave up with a defeated sigh and asked, “What is a web site?”

“A web site, my dear boy, is…” the Headmaster paused and lifted a sheet of parchment from his desk and read, “is ‘A collection of \"pages\" or files linked together and available on the World Wide Web. Web sites are provided by companies, organizations and individuals.’” Dumbledore beamed at Snape as if it was all so obvious in the first place.

“Ah, I have heard of the World Wide Web and computers. But why am I to make a web site?”

“I do believe, Severus, that it is time we had one. We have a larger number of muggleborns entering Hogwarts. It would be so easy to add a,” he scanned the parchment again, “a web address, called a URL, to their Hogwarts’ admission letter. That way, the parents can find out more about their children and the school.”

Snape thought about it for a moment before saying, “But from what I understand about how the World Wide Web works, wouldn’t anyone be able to find it? They say that you can type in search criteria and a list of possible places come up for you to explore. Isn’t this exposing our world unnecessarily?”

“The young woman who designed a web site appearance for us and who will be teaching you how to put it together assured me there is a way to make the web site unreachable by standard searches and that the first page, even if it come across by accident, will only be a login screen which will require a password that needs to be typed in to enter. We will provide the muggle parents with a password. We will also charm the site so that only the parents or future student will be recognized with their password, so another person in the home who comes by it will not be able to view it.”

Dumbledore looked like a proud father as he said this, Snape thought, though he knew that whomever it was that he would be learning from was the one who came up with these ideas. It was all so very clever, and it would save them the hassle of trips to visit the skeptical muggles.

“Why me, Headmaster? You know how much I was looking forward to this summer,” Snape said, his scowl back in place after regaining his bearings.

“I’m told that the programming of such things follows a logical pattern. This would mean that you would be the best suited for this job. I do believe this is an important venture for the future of Hogwarts. You will also have a place to stay, and as I said, provided with lab space and more than ample free time to work on your potions.”

Sighing in resignation, Snape nodded. He rose from his seat and turned to leave. Stopping at the door of the office, he asked, “When am I to leave, then?”

“Three days past the end of term. Since you said your finals are all taken care of, this should provide ample time for you to take care of your shopping lists and get your notes in order. Also, make sure you pack muggle clothes. You will be staying in London.”

Snape crinkled his nose at this before plastering his standard potions master face on, and left the office.

He decided to wander the halls for a bit to clear his head. He was at odds with himself over this new idea. On the one hand, it made sense to reach out to the muggleborn’s parents through a medium that they were accustomed to. On the other hand, it was just so muggle. Oh, he supposed that this World Wide Web was a type of magic all its’ own. The very idea that anyone anywhere in the world with a computer can get to the World Wide Web and find information on just about anything.

As he prowled the corridors, and began to make his way down in order to start his lists and packing, it hit him! He had no idea where he was going or who he was going to be taught by. He was assuming that she was a Witch and probably muggleborn, or at least half-muggle. And a potions’ laboratory? Deciding he would just floo the Headmaster later, he headed back to his rooms.
